The influence of electrochemical potential on wear

Electrochemical potentials between ?1.4 and +1.2 V (saturated calomel electrode) applied to Ni(200) in the nominally inert electrolyte 1 M NaClO₄ resulted in an observed order of magnitude variation in the wear rate of the nickel under fretting and sliding conditions. The pin-on-disc experiments were carried out with a fused Al₂O₃ pin loaded at 9.8 and 19.6 MPa sliding on discs at 10 m min^?1, and fretting wear was simulated by a high frequency (10⁵–10⁷cm^?2s^?1) low amplitude impact of a vibrating Al₂O₃ pin on the disc. These results suggest that it is possible to control wear in ionically conducting fluids through the application of appropriate electrochemical potentials.

This article describes a barrier-free burn center that is accessible to persons with disabilities and that complies with Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The burn center has 3 separate components: patient rooms, patient support facilities, and staff support facilities. Thirteen rooms are used to care for 16 patients. Two of the 13 rooms are accessible to people with disabilities. These 2 rooms have wide doors that permit a wheelchair to pass through, and they have enough clear floor space for a wheelchair to make a 180 degrees turn. The rooms have a sink that is accessible from a wheelchair. The bathrooms have large, clear floor spaces that allow for the turning of a wheelchair, elevated toilets, grab bars, and showers that permit wheelchair access. Special wheelchairs that provide easier shower and commode access are available. The patient support services feature a large hydrotherapy room that contains a table-shower system that allows a person in a wheelchair to gain access to both sides of the shower table. A tub room has been constructed to provide compact patient bathing and hydromassage, and it is also accessible to people in wheelchairs. The staff support services include a locker room that has a shower accessible to people with disabilities so that staff members with mobility disorders can work in the burn center. Grade II braille writing marks all of the signs that designate the permanent rooms and spacing in the burn center and in the contiguous common use areas. The common use area has a restroom accessible to people with disabilities and a waiting room with a telephone communications system for people with mobility disorders or mobility impairment.     

Polycyclic aromatic compounds in curing smoke

Summary The curing smoke, generated by the smouldering of alder chips, from a commercial food smoking plant was investigated with respect to polynuclear aromatic compounds (PAC). Samples were taken from inside the ovens and in the working zone immediately outside them. Analysis showed that considerable amounts of methyl phenanthrenes were present in the smoke as a major part of the PAC content.

Polycyclische aromatische Verbindungen im Rauch einer Räucherei

Zusammenfassung Rauch aus einer kommerziellen Räucherei von schwelenden Erlenspänen wurde auf polycyclische aromatische Verbindungen (PAC) untersucht. Proben wurden innerhalb der Öfen und in dem Arbeitsbereich außerhalb der Öfen gezogen. Erhebliche Mengen an Methylphenanthren wurden als Hauptbestandteil des PAC-Inhalts im Rauch nachgewiesen.

     

Magnetic traveling fields for metallurgical processes

Alternating magnetic fields lead to electrodynamic forces, which can be used industrially for stirring melts. These magnetic traveling fields, produced by straight or cylindrical stirrers, have become a well-established tool for the metallurgist. Since the size of melts is constantly growing, the stirrers are becoming increasingly valuable for achieving homogenization, temperature equalization, rapid and complete chemical reactions, and effective degassing.

Optimised deep learning features for improved melanoma detection

In this article, we are addressing the question of effective usage of the feature set extracted from deep learning models pre-trained on ImageNet. Exploring this option will offer very fast and attractive alternative to transfer learning strategies. The traditional task of skin lesion recognition consists of several stages, where the automated system is typically trained on preprocessed images with known diagnosis, which allows classification of new samples to predefined categories. For this task, we are proposing here an improved melanoma detection method based on the combination of linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and the features extracted from the deep learning approach. We are examining the usage of the LDA approach on activation of the fully-connected layer of deep learning in order to increase the classification accuracy and at the same time to reduce the feature space dimensionality. We tested our method on five different classifiers and evaluated results using various metrics. The presented comparison demonstrates the very high effectiveness of the suggested feature reduction, which leads not only to the significant lowering of employed features but also to the increasing performance of all tested classifiers in almost all measured characteristics.
