Dynamic tensile strength of polyurea-bonded steel/E-glass composite joints

The dynamic tensile strengths of E-glass composite/polyurea and polyurea/steel interfaces within the E-glass composite/polyurea/AL-6XN stainless steel joint were measured using a laser spallation technique. Values of 370?±?20?MPa were obtained for the polyurea/composite interface while a much higher value of 486?±?20?MPa was obtained for the steel/polyurea interface. Because of the transient nature of the stress pulse, the strain rate changes continuously as the interface stress builds up. A peak strain rate of 5?×?10⁵?s^?1 was estimated. The effect of moisture on the tensile strength of the E-glass/polyurea interface was also examined. The effect was found to be minimal, with the tensile strength stabilizing at 320?±?25?MPa after 30?days of exposure to a 90%RH, 50?°C environment. When comparing the strengths of corresponding interfaces in an epoxy-bonded joint from a previous study, it was concluded that polyurea results in a much stronger and durable joint.     

Multivariate Analysis of the Stability of Spray-Dried Eupenicillium javanicum Peptidases

Peptidases occupy a central position in the enzyme market because of their importance in many areas, such as for physiological processes, foods, and detergents, as well as in the pharmaceutical, leather, and biotechnology industries. Microbial production is among the major sources of peptidases because it presents many advantages when compared with other methods. In this study, the metallopeptidases produced by the fungus Eupenicillium javanicum under a solid-state fermentation bioprocess were spray-dried. The enzymatic extract was dried using drying adjuvants, and optimal conditions for preserving enzymatic activity were studied following a Box-Behnken experimental design. The spray process factors studied were the air-drying temperature, enzyme feed flow rate, and the proportion of enzyme/additive. The responses analyzed were the dry extract yield and enzymatic activity after spray drying. Additionally, the stability of the dry extracts was assessed during 180 days at 4°C and 25°C. The results revealed extract yields of up to 66.12% and good enzymatic activity for intermediate values of temperature and adjuvant proportions. Furthermore, the dried enzymatic extracts showed potential for future commercial applications because of their stability at 25°C for 180 days.     

Dyeing of cationised cotton with acid dyes

The production of cationised cotton fabrics, via Sandene 8425, 1, 1-dimethyl-3-hydroxy azetidinium chloride and 1, 1-diethyl-3-hydroxy azetidinium chloride, greatly enhances the exhaustion and fixation of acid dyes. This paper shows that these dyes can be used in the absence of salt in a neutral medium. Wash fastness, light fastness and other properties were studied.     

Generalized Thermoelastic Infinite Layer Subjected to Ramp-Type Thermal and Mechanical Loading under Three Theories—State Space Approach

A problem of thermoelastic interactions in an elastic infinite layer 0 ≤ x ≤ h with an elevated temperature field arising from ramp-type heating and loading has been constructed. The governing equations are written in a unified system from which the field equations for coupled thermoelasticity as well as for generalized thermoelasticity can be easily obtained as particular cases. Due attention has been paid to the finite rise times of temperature and stress. The problem has been solved analytically by using a state-space approach. Solutions from the derived analytical expressions have been computed for a specific situation. The solution for the half-space when (h → ∞) has been found also. Numerical results for the temperature distribution and thermal stress are represented graphically. A comparison was made among the results predicted by the theories.     

Synthesis,photophysical properties,and application of optical brighteners based on stilbene-oxadiazole derivatives

A series of symmetrical optical brighteners based on stilbene-oxadiazole derivatives were prepared by the simple synthetic route of a condensation reaction between 4,4′-dicarboxystilbene and N,N′-carbonyldiimidazole reagent, forming stilbene 4,4′-ethene-1,2-diyldibenzohydrazide as a key intermediate. The obtained compounds were characterised by analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis data. The absorption maximum wavelength, fluorescence emission wavelength, and fluorescence quantum yield were measured in N,N-dimethylformamide solution at room temperature, and the fluorescence properties of the prepared compounds in the solid state were observed and measured. The compounds exhibited bluish and greenish fluorescence emission, with the fluorescence quantum yield in the range 0.2–0.8; the effects of substituents on the emission spectra of these compounds were interpreted. The prepared compounds were applied as optical brighteners to polyester and polyamide-6 fabrics at various concentrations, and their CIE whiteness index and fastness properties were studied.
