Estimation of aggressiveness of seawater corrosion using indicators of microbiological activity of fouling communities formed on metals

Based on the quantitative characteristics of the fermentative activity of microorganisms that compose fouling communities formed on metals, the corrosion aggressiveness of seawater in the South China Sea and Sea of Japan was estimated. The regression relationship between the characteristics of the activity and main physical and chemical factors of the marine environment and the rate of corrosion in metal samples were established.     

Cation-promoted supramolecular assembly of bivalent metal tetra-15-crown-5-phthalocyaninates: Controlling the architecture of supramolecular aggregates

Cation-promoted supramolecular assembly of cobalt(II) and ruthenium(II) tetra-15-crown-5-phthalocyaninates is comparatively studied using the electronic absorption and infrared spectroscopy. The effects of the nature of the receptor and substrate on the architecture of the supramolecular aggregates formed are discovered. By contrast to Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II) tetra-15-crown-5-phthalocyaninates, Co(II) and Ru(II) complexes are found to demonstrate sodium-potassium selectivity determined by the peculiarities of supramolecular structures formed upon the interaction with the cations.     

A generator of electrical discharges in water

A semiconductor high-voltage pulse generator for the electric-discharge water purification is described. It is based on a low-voltage capacitor storage, step-up pulse transformer, and high-voltage output circuit with a recuperation section returning inefficiently used energy to the power source of the capacitor storage.     

Structural relaxation and related viscous flow of Zr–Cu–Al-based bulk glasses produced from the melts with different glass-forming ability

The relaxation ability of Zr₄₆(Cu_4/5Ag_1/5)₄₆Al₈ and Zr₄₆Cu₄₆Al₈ bulk glasses displaying different glass-forming ability (GFA) in the liquid state has been studied by measurements of the shear modulus, creep and stress relaxation. It has been found that the four-component alloy with higher GFA always displays higher relaxation ability in the glassy state. This fact does not seem to correlate with the amount of the frozen-in free volume as dependent on the GFA. It has been argued that the relaxation centers responsible for structural relaxation and related viscous flow are similar to dumbbell interstitials in simple metals. Such an approach precisely describes the kinetics of shear modulus relaxation and reasonably agrees with a phenomenological interpretation of structural relaxation-induced viscoelastic phenomena in metallic glasses.

Optical properties and morphology of diamond-like films obtained in a supersonic flow of a hydrocarbon plasma

A possibility of using a new method of film synthesis in a supersonic flow of a hydrocarbon plasma generated by a disk-type magnetohydrodynamic accelerator is demonstrated. Two methods are used for characterization of diamond-like carbon films: nondestructive spectroscopic ellipsometry and atomic-force microscopy.

Quantum computers: Achievements,implementation difficulties,and prospects

A review of the principles of operation of quantum computers and their elements is presented. The radical advantage of quantum algorithms for processing information over the classical ones is discussed, quantum entanglement is considered as the basic resource of quantum computations, and the most promising and interesting proposals on realization of quantum computers on the basis of trapped ions, nuclear spins, quantum dots, superconducting structures, and others are described. This review reflects the materials of the report presented at the scientific session of the Department of Nanotechnologies and Information Technologies of the Russian Academy of Sciences on February 25, 2010.     

Influence of implantation of silicon and oxygen ions into a heteroepitaxial silicon layer on a sapphire substrate on the leakage currents of <Emphasis Type=Italic>n</Emphasis>-channel transistors of CMOS IC SOS technology

Results of the investigation into the influence of implantation of oxygen and silicon ions in the silicon layer in a silicon-on-sapphire structure on the crystal quality of the layer and on the increase in the leakage currents of n-channel transistors fabricated based on these structures are presented.
