The role of aluminum in automotive weight reduction—part III

This series of articles provides, from an international perspective, an analysis of the future of the automotive industry and aluminum’s role in automobile weight reduction. Part I briefly described technological, environmental, and societal issues that are mandating vehicular weight reduction for, among other reasons, purposes of fuel economy. Part II described the status of the weight-reduction technologies that are currently available and projects how they may evolve in the coming years. Part III, the final installment, examines some of the specific strengths and weaknesses of aluminum alloys with regard to their long-term attractiveness to automakers.     

An IR study on ion-specific and solvent-specific swelling of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) gel

Swelling degrees of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) gel were measured in aqueous salt solutions and in water/organic solvent mixtures to find marked ion- and solvent-specificities. In order to investigate any correlation of those specificities with hydration or solvation of PVP, IR spectra band of the CO group was monitored by means of ATR method both for PVP gel and the relevant solution systems. Dependence of the peak frequency on the swelling ratio suggested that hydration of PVP carbonyl group in deswollen gel systems is different from that in the corresponding solution systems. In the solution systems, PVP carbonyl band showed a high-wavenumber shift for deswollen systems, which can be well correlated with changes in water proton charge through ionic hydration and with Gutmann's acceptor number of organic solvents. In the deswollen gel systems, the CO band showed a low-wavenumber shift, suggesting a strong hydration or doubly hydrated state. This unexpected behavior was interpreted by assuming an intermolecular hydrogen bond of two carbonyl groups intermediated by water molecules.     

Cytokines affecting survival and differentiation of an astrocyte progenitor cell line

The effects of various cytokines on survival and differentiation of an astrocyte progenitor cell line (AP-16) were examined. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) deprivation caused death of AP-16 cells by apoptosis. Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) prevented the apoptosis occurring in the absence of EGF. Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) induced glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and decreased A2B5 antigen in AP-16 cells, indicating that these cytokines induced AP-16 cells to differentiate into astrocytes.     

High-performance polymer alloys of polybenzoxazine and bismaleimide

Two series of high-performance polymer alloys were prepared by mixing typical benzoxine monomers, 3-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazine (P-a) or 6,6-(1-methylethyliden)-bis-(3,4-dihydro-3-phenyl-2H-1,3-benzoxazine) (B-a), with a typical bismaleimide, 4,4-bismaleimidodiphenyl methane by various ratios followed by thermal treatment up to 240 °C. DSC and IR of the alloys were examined to follow the curing reaction. These analyses showed that the obtained polymer alloys are AB co-cross-linked polymer networks through the formation of ether linkage between the hydroxyl group of polybenoxazine and the double bond of bismaleimide. Viscoelastic analysis and softening temperature measurement revealed that the polymer alloys have much higher glass transition temperatures than those of each homopolymer. The thermal stability also increased with the increase of bismaleimide content as evidenced by TGA.     

Heavy arsenic doping of silicon grown by atmospheric pressure selective epitaxial chemical vapor deposition

Selective epitaxial Si with a high arsenic concentration of 2.2×10¹⁹ atoms/cm³ was deposited at a high growth rate of 3.3 nm/min under atmospheric pressure. It was confirmed that this method had excellent selectivity and produced films having good crystalline quality, abrupt dopant profiles at the interfaces, and smooth surfaces. The growth mechanism is discussed in terms of the relationship between the effects of arsenic surface segregation and etching by hydrogen chloride.     

Effects of intravenous lansoprazole on acute gastric mucosal lesions and acid secretion

The effects of lansoprazole given intravenously on gastric mucosal lesions, gastric bleeding and acid secretion were investigated in rats in comparison with those of omeprazole, famotidine and ranitidine. Lansoprazole inhibited the formation of gastric mucosal lesions in rats induced by water-immersion stress or aspirin with ID50 values of 0.26 and 0.99 mg/kg, respectively, and also inhibited gastric bleeding induced by hemorrhagic shock or water-immersion stress with ID50 values of 0.46 and 1.22 mg/kg, respectively. Lansoprazole was more potent than omeprazole, famotidine and ranitidine in inhibiting gastric mucosal lesions and hemorrhagic shock- or stress-induced bleeding. Famotidine and ranitidine showed negligible inhibition of water-immersion stress-induced gastric bleeding. Lansoprazole strongly inhibited water-immersion stress-stimulated acid secretion in rats, whereas famotidine and ranitidine did not show a potent inhibitory effect. These results indicate that lansoprazole exerts prominent inhibitory actions against the formation of gastric mucosal lesions and gastric bleeding by inhibiting acid secretion, and they show that it is superior to histamine H2-receptor antagonists in inhibiting stress-induced gastric bleeding.     

Analysis of polarization plane rotation characteristic in 2D photonic crystal waveguide with chiral medium by condensed node spatial network

Using the photonic band gap in photonic crystals, the fundamental waveguide structures for the light wavelength range have been developed. Based on the fine structure of these many functional devices have been proposed by analytical or numerical simulation methods and the experiments of trial manufacture. In this paper, the treatment of chiral dielectric in the Condensed Node Spatial Network for the vector potential is explained, and we show the polarization plane rotation property in air‐hole and pillar type photonic crystal waveguide structures with the chiral medium substrate. Then, we show the fundamental advantage of the air‐hole type photonic crystal waveguide structure in application to a mode converter. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Integrating local action elements for action analysis

In this paper, we propose a framework for human action analysis from video footage. A video action sequence in our perspective is a dynamic structure of sparse local spatial–temporal patches termed action elements, so the problems of action analysis in video are carried out here based on the set of local characteristics as well as global shape of a prescribed action. We first detect a set of action elements that are the most compact entities of an action, then we extend the idea of Implicit Shape Model to space time, in order to properly integrate the spatial and temporal properties of these action elements. In particular, we consider two different recipes to construct action elements: one is to use a Sparse Bayesian Feature Classifier to choose action elements from all detected Spatial Temporal Interest Points, and is termed discriminative action elements. The other one detects affine invariant local features from the holistic Motion History Images, and picks up action elements according to their compactness scores, and is called generative action elements. Action elements detected from either way are then used to construct a voting space based on their local feature representations as well as their global configuration constraints. Our approach is evaluated in the two main contexts of current human action analysis challenges, action retrieval and action classification. Comprehensive experimental results show that our proposed framework marginally outperforms all existing state-of-the-arts techniques on a range of different datasets.     

Kinetic study on the first stage during thermal degradation of polystyrene

The kinetic parameters of the first stage of polystyrene degradation have been investigated to elucidate the reaction mechanisms using the flow reactor system. The decrease in molecular weight of polystyrene was recorded at minute intervals over the temperature range 310°–390°C. Generally, the first and second stages were observed by thermogravimetric analysis (t.g.a.), however in the early stage of the degradation volatile yields of at least 5% occurred. Therefore, using t.g.a. analysis it is difficult to detect this earlier stage. It became evident that the first stage in the earlier part of the reaction could be detected by g.p.c. analysis. We have observed the hidden kinetic parameters of the nature of the first stage of the polystyrene degradation. The results indicate that the main chains were degraded randomly with the small quantitative volatile groups in the first stage and the rates of decrease in molecular weight in the first stage against reaction temperatures were evaluated as log k_s = 12.0 ? 41300/RT.
