The authors review the progress in the RARDE (Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment) electromagnetic gun (REMGUN) program. They cover research on both railgun and LIA (linear induction accelerator) technology, including work on modeling, projectile/barrel interactions armatures, switching, and instrumentation. They also describe the major research facilities. Progress is reported in the identification and development of single-shot switches, integrated switch/barrel concepts, armatures and pulse power supplies as well as the integration of railgun components. LIA research has concentrated on launcher design and projectile/barrel interactions, highlighting the problems of pulse power systems for this form of electromagnetic launcher  相似文献

Holstein heifer calves from selected and control lines were treated with growth hormone-releasing factor to determine whether the magnitude of the pituitary growth hormone response is associated with genetic potential for milk yield. Cows in the selected line were bred to highest Predicted Difference milk sires available each year, while control line cows were bred to bulls that were average for 1964 milk production. Eight calves from each line of similar age (206 to 210 days) and weight (205 kg average) were injected intravenously with .1 microgram/kg growth hormone-releasing factor. Dams' first lactation 305-day mature equivalent records were 10,192 +/- 495 kg for selected calves and 6,908 +/- 376 kg for control calves. Before treatment, GH tended to be higher in selected than control calves (mean +/- SE: selected = 7.5 +/- 1.8, control = 4.6 +/- .4 ng/ml). After injection, peak GH were reached within 20 min and were similar in selected and control calves, averaging 66 +/- 16 and 73 +/- 13 ng/ml, respectively. Results indicate that the magnitude of the growth hormone response to growth hormone-releasing factor is not related to future performance of dairy calves.  相似文献

An adaptive alignment scheme for packaging two-dimensional (2D) arrays of optoelectronic systems interconnected by free-space optics is presented. A method of using three quadrant detectors to detect alignment errors in six degrees of freedom is described. However, the complexity of this system increases due to the interactions among the detected error signals. A novel control algorithm is presented to eliminate the interaction and simplify the design of the closed-loop feedback control. A computer simulation compares different algorithms and shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. An experimental closed-loop feedback system demonstrated the principle of the error detection and correction of the proposed system with initial errors in multiple degrees of freedom  相似文献

Nearly four years in development, the IBM Linux watch contains a complete computer system that runs Linux, displays X11 graphics, and has wireless connectivity. The system fits in a case that could pass as a slightly unusual analog timepiece with a somewhat odd shape and an extraordinarily brilliant face. The developers have created two versions of the watch, one with an organic light-emitting diode display and the other with a liquid crystal display. Still considered a research prototype, the watch already runs some personal information management applications, and it can communicate with PCs, PDAs, and other wireless-enabled devices, viewing condensed e-mail and directly receiving pager-like messages. Due to the potential for essentially unbounded scene complexity, it is often necessary to translate the sensor-derived signals into richer symbolic representations. A key initial stage in this abstraction process is signal-level perceptual organization (SLPO) involving the processes of partitioning and identification. A parallel SLPO algorithm that follows the global hypothesis testing paradigm, but breaks the iterative structure of conventional region growing through the use of α-partitioning and region filtering is presented. These two techniques segment an image such that the gray-level variation within each region can be described by a regression model. It is shown that the decomposition of an arbitrary N-point structuring element will require at least [3 ln N/ln 3]points. Using this lower bound it is possible to find the optimal decompositions (in terms of the minimum number of unions or the minimum number of points) for all one-dimensional connected line segments. The rheological behavior and microstructure of semi-solid aluminum alloys were studied using a novel apparatus, the drop-forge viscometer (DFV). The viscometer determines force from the second-derivative-of-displacement data with respect to time and permits calculations of viscosities at shear rates in excess of 1000 s−1. Alternatively, the DFV can be operated like a conventional parallel-plate viscometer, attaining shear rates as low as 10−5 s−1. Rapid compression experiments (in the DFV) result in first rapidly increasing, then decreasing, shear rates. In a typical experiment, the viscosity decreased from about 100 to 1 Pa·s as the shear rate increased from approximately 200 to 1300 s−1 in less than 4 ms. The viscosity later increased to about 10 Pa·s as the shear rate decreased from 1300 to 30 s−1 over 2 ms. The minimum viscosity obtained depended on the maximum shear rate, not the duration of shear. The dual observed phenomena of (1) a very rapid drop of viscosity with increasing shear rate followed by (2) a relatively slow increase of viscosity with decreasing shear rate thereafter have potential significance for future machine and process design. For example, it should be possible to form higher fraction solid slurries than is now feasible by applying vigorous shear to semi-solid slurries just before the metal is introduced to the die entrance. The DFV was used to calculate viscosity as a function of shear rate for samples produced by the commercial strain-induced, melt-activated (SIMA) and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) methods, as well as the recently developed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) method. Isothermal experiments were conducted between fraction solid of 0.44 and 0.67 for the various alloys (corresponding to a temperature range of 579 °C to 611 °C). The viscosity of the commercial semi-solid Al-Si alloys A357 and A356 produced by the various methods was similar. Separation of liquid and solid phases was not observed in rapid compression experiments shorter than 10 ms, either visually or with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) characterization. At low compression velocities, segregation was observed and increased with increasing amounts of strain. The maximum fraction solid compressed at high and low shear rates were 0.67 and 0.69, respectively.  相似文献
