Within the framework of an EEC project involving ten European laboratories, research on the application of several electric and electromagnetic methods to a geothermal field (Travale, Tuscany), has been undertaken by the B.R.G.M. The objective was to refine the conceptual model of the Travale field and, therefore, to describe the morphology of the basement (down to 2 km depth) and of the Rhaetian reservoir covered by impermeable series.The method best suited to this type of prospection appeared to be electrical dipole — dipole profiling, combined with a 2-D interpretation. Contrasts at more than 2 km depth (500 m long dipoles) could be seen and compared to the depths measured in the boreholes. The EM Melos method (Syscal equipment) should be improved (lower frequencies) to increase the depth penetration. It is, however, a good complementary method for the surface layers. An attempt at a computational interpretation of the self potential profiles gave promising results. The conceptual study on the accelerator driven system (ADS) that lasted for about five years ended in 1999 in China. As one
project of the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) in the energy domain, which is sponsored by the China
Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), a five-year-program of fundamental research of ADS physics and related technology
was launched in 2000 and passed national review at the end of 2005. The China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), the Institute
of High Energy Physics (IHEP), the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics in Peking University (PKU-IHIP) and other institutions jointly
carried out the research. The research activities were focused on HPPA physics and technology, reactor physics of external
source driven sub-critical assembly, nuclear data base and material study. For HPPA, a high current injector consisting of
an ECR ion source, LEBT and an RFQ accelerating structure of 3.5 MeV was built. In reactor physics study, a series of neutron
multiplication experimental study has been carried out and still being done. The VENUS facility has been constructed as the
basic experimental platform for neutronics study in ADS blanket. It’s a zero power sub-critical neutron multiplying assembly
driven by external neutron produced by a pulsed neutron generator. The theoretical, experimental and simulation study on nuclear
data, material properties and nuclear fuel circulation related to ADS is carrying on to provide the database for ADS system

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has completed work on a series of standards on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) equipment functional operations and network element management. The objective of these standards is to enable flexible design and interoperability of network elements for use in a global ATM network, independent of any specific implementation. This article discusses these standards with respect to their development and application in planning ATM networks. Specifically, it addresses the following: the modeling approach taken in the development of the ITU standards, key operational features specified in the ATM network element functional model, and the capabilities of the ATM network element management interface. Examples of ATM equipment are provided to illustrate how the functional models specified in the ITU standards may be used by network planners and equipment manufacturers to specify and develop ATM equipment tailored to specific needs, while ensuring network interoperability. An analytical formulation is presented for the direct scattering problem of one-dimensional (1-D) inhomogeneous anisotropic medium in a special case. This method gives nonlinear differential equations for the reflection coefficients of the anisotropic medium. Applying the discontinuity condition of the dielectric parameters at the interface of the medium with free space, approximate closed-form solutions for the reflection coefficients are obtained.
