An Interval Fuzzy Multiobjective Watershed Management Model for the Lake Qionghai Watershed, China

Integrated watershed management is required to ensure the reasonable use of resources and reconcile interactions among natural and human systems. In the present study, an interval fuzzy multiobjective programming (IFMOP) method was used to solve an integrated watershed management problem. Based on system analysis, an IFMOP model suitable for a lake watershed system {IFMOPLWS} was developed and applied to the Lake Qionghai watershed in China. Scenario analysis and an interactive approach were used in the solution process. In this manner, various system components were incorporated into one framework for holistic consideration and optimization. Integrality and uncertainty, as well as the multiobjective and dynamic characteristics of the watershed system, were well addressed. Using two scenarios, two planning schemes were generated. Agriculture, tourism, macroeconomics, cropland use, water supply, forest coverage, soil erosion, and water pollution were fully interpreted and compared to identify a preferable planning alternative for local agencies. This study showed that the IFMOPLWS is a powerful tool for integrated watershed management planning and can provide a solid base for sustainable watershed management.     

Measurement of gain spectrum for Fabry-Perot semiconductor lasers by the Fourier transform method with a deconvolution process

To improve the accuracy of measured gain spectra, which is usually limited by the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA), a deconvolution process based on the measured spectrum of a narrow linewidth semiconductor laser is applied in the Fourier transform method. The numerical simulation shows that practical gain spectra can be resumed by the Fourier transform method with the deconvolution process. Taking the OSA resolution to be 0.06, 0.1, and 0.2 nm, the gain-reflectivity product spectra with the difference of about 2% are obtained for a 1550-nm semiconductor laser with the cavity length of 720 /spl mu/m. The spectra obtained by the Fourier transform method without the deconvolution process and the Hakki-Paoli method are presented and compared. The simulation also shows that the Fourier transform method has less sensitivity to noise than the Hakki-Paoli method.     

Change of foot size with weightbearing. A study of 2829 children 3 to 18 years of age

The change of foot length and width with age has been reported in a few anthropometric studies in the literature. However, the relationship with body height rarely is reported, and the dynamic effect of weightbearing on foot size has not been documented. In this series, 2829 children 3 to 18 years of age of equal gender distribution were included in the study. The foot length and width on weightbearing and nonweightbearing were measured with a special precision electronic caliper. The foot length and width were found to increase linearly from the age of 3 years until 12 years in girls and 15 years in boys. This was followed by a phase during which the increase plateaued. The foot length and width increased significantly on weightbearing at all ages in both genders with a mean of 2.1 to 4.4 mm or 3.1% to 4.8%, respectively. The foot length and width also were found to correlate significantly with the body height in both genders, with a correlation coefficient of 0.96 to 0.98. No significant differences were found between the sizes of the dominant and nondominant foot in either gender.

A monoclonal antibody selected for probing the folding of staphylococcal nuclease and its N-terminal fragments

PURPOSE: Nitric oxide (NO) is generated in mammalian tissue by the conversion of L-arginine to L-citrulline. The reaction is catalyzed by nitric oxide synthase (NOS). NO has been suggested to have a dual role in tumor biology with both antitumor and tumor promoter activity. Furthermore, it has been proposed that NO contributes to interleukin-2-induced antitumor activity. Since interleukin-2 is used in the treatment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) it was of interest to study the NOS activity in the human kidney and in RCC and its correlation to tumor grade. Furthermore, the effect of cytokine treatment on NOS activity and the effect of NO donor application was studied in cultured cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effect of cytokine treatment on NOS activity and the effect of NO donor application on cell proliferation was studied in cultured human proximal tubular cells and in RCC cell lines HN4 and HN51. NOS activity was measured by the L-arginine to L-citrulline conversion assay. RESULTS: Calcium-dependent NOS activity was found in all non-malignant kidney tissues (486+/-63 pmol. min(-1) g(-1) tissue). The activity was significantly lower in RCC (24+/-6 pmol. min(-1) g(-1) tissue) and correlated with tumor grade; thus high grade tumors showed lower activity than low grade tumors. Calcium-independent NOS activity was not detected in non-malignant kidney tissue or in RCC tissue. In cultured proximal tubular cells and RCC cell lines HN4 and HN51, cytokine treatment induced a marked increase in NOS activity and NO exerted cytostatic effects on these cell lines. Conclusions: The NOS activity was higher in non-malignant kidney tissue than in RCC tissue and was inversely correlated with tumor grade. Furthermore, cytokine treatment induced a marked increase in NOS activity and NO exerted cytostatic effects on cultured proximal tubular cells and RCC cell lines.     

Chemical reactions between aluminum and fly ash during synthesis and reheating of Al-fly ash composite

Thermodynamic analysis indicates that there is the possibility of chemical reactions between aluminum melt and cenosphere fly ash particles. These particles contain alumina, silica, and iron oxide, which, during solidification processing of aluminum-fly ash composites or during holding of such composites at temperatures above the melting temperature of aluminum, are likely to undergo chemical reduction. These chemical reactions between the fly ash and molten aluminum have been studied by metallographic examination, differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray analysis after holding the aluminum-fly ash composites for different periods above the liquidus temperature. The experiments indicate that there is progressive reduction of silica and mullite in the fly ash, and formation of alumina with holding time of composites at a temperature of 850 °C. The walls of the cenosphere fly ash particles progressively disintegrate into discrete particles as the reaction progresses. The rate of chemical reaction was high at the start of holding the composite at a temperature of 850 °C, and then the rate significantly decreased with time. The reaction was almost complete after 10 hours.
