Efficient Spreadsheet Algorithm for First-Order Reliability Method

A new spreadsheet-cell-object-oriented algorithm for the first-order reliability method is proposed and illustrated for cases with correlated nonnormals and explicit and implicit performance functions. The new approach differs from the writers earlier algorithm by obviating the need for computations of equivalent normal means and equivalent normal standard deviations. It obtains the solution faster and is more efficient, robust, and succinct. Other advantages include ease of initialization prior to constrained optimization, ease of randomization of initial values for checking robustness, and fewer required optimization constraints during spreadsheet-automated search for the design point. Two cases with implicit performance functions, namely an asymmetrically loaded beam on Winkler medium and a strut with complex supports are analyzed using the new approach and discussed. Comparisons are also made between the proposed approach and that based on Rosenblatt transformation.     

Coordinating production and distribution of jobs with bundling operations

We consider an integrated scheduling and distribution model in which jobs completed by two different machines must be bundled together for delivery. The objective is to minimize the sum of the delivery cost and customers' waiting costs. Such a model not only attempts to coordinate the job schedules on both machines, but also aims to coordinate the machine schedules with the delivery plan. Polynomial-time heuristics and approximation schemes are developed for the model with only direct shipments as well as the general model with milk-run deliveries.     

Bluff body flow simulation using lattice Boltzmann equation with multiple relaxation time

Numerical simulations using multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model (MRT-LBM) are carried out for a long slender rigid circular cylinder in a cross flow to examine three-dimensional wake effect on the flow-induced forces. A mesh refinement technique is applied in the MRT-LBM calculation. The aim is to assess the validity and efficiency of the MRT-LBM model in three-dimensional calculation. In order to simulate the practical situation correctly, wall boundary conditions are specified at both ends of the cylinder. The aspect ratio of the slender cylinder is 16. The calculation is compared with results obtained from a finite volume method (FVM) and a lattice BGK model [Bhatnagar PL, Gross EP, Krook M. A model for collision processes in gases. 1. Small amplitude processes in charged and neutral one-component systems. Phys Rev 1954;94:511–25] with refined grid. Good agreement is obtained. It is found that the MRT-LBM is more efficient and faster in three-dimensional calculations.     

Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumour presenting as small bowel volvulus: a rare disease with a rare presentation

A 78-year-old Chinese woman presented with recurrent postprandial abdominal pain. Computerised tomography revealed a small bowel tumour causing volvulus of a segment of the small bowel. Laparotomy confirmed an extraluminal ileal tumour with partial volvulus of the involved small bowel segment. Small bowel resection was done. Histological and ultrastructural studies confirmed a gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumour. We review the medical literature on this rare tumour.     

Perturbation realization, potentials, and sensitivity analysis ofMarkov processes

Two fundamental concepts and quantities, realization factors and performance potentials, are introduced for Markov processes. The relations among these two quantities and the group inverse of the infinitesimal generator are studied. It is shown that the sensitivity of the steady-state performance with respect to the change of the infinitesimal generator can be easily calculated by using either of these three quantities and that these quantities can be estimated by analyzing a single sample path of a Markov process. Based on these results, algorithms for estimating performance sensitivities on a single sample path of a Markov process can be proposed. The potentials in this paper are defined through realization factors and are shown to be the same as those defined by Poisson equations. The results provide a uniform framework of perturbation realization for infinitesimal perturbation analysis (IPA) and non-IPA approaches to the sensitivity analysis of steady-state performance; they also provide a theoretical background for the PA algorithms developed in recent years
