Thermal conductivity in metal hydride beds

Experimental data on the effective thermal conductivities of TiMn_1.5 hydride were correlated through a kinetics theory of gas and equilibrium behaviors and an empirical equation was derived as the sum of two independent terms of pressure and hydride composition.     

Scattering and mode conversion of guided modes by an arbitrary cross-sectional cylindrical object in an optical slab waveguide

The scattering and mode conversion of guided modes caused by a cylindrical scatterer of arbitrary cross section embedded in, or placed on, a dielectric slab waveguide are investigated theoretically. The method employed for the analysis is the surface current integral equation technique. The total scattered power, mode-conversion coefficients, and scattering patterns for the typical numerical examples are shown.     

Elasto-plastic analysis of orthogonally stiffened plates with initial imperfections under uniaxial compression

In general, the stiffened plates consisting of steel plate elements are unavoidably accompanied by initial imperfections such as residual stresses and initial deflections, which have considerable effects on their ultimate strength. Therefore, it is needed for designing them to develop more rational method taking the ultimate strength influenced by initial imperfections into account rather than the conventional design method being on the basis of the linear elastic buckling theory.From this point of view, this study aims to evaluate rigorously the ultimate strength of orthogonally stiffened plate with initial imperfections under uniaxial in-plane compression. The elasto-plastic finite element method is applied to attain this purpose. By a happy combination of modal analytical technique and conventional finite element method, much reduction of the degree of freedom can be expected to be realized herewith. Some numerical calculations are performed by means of this rigorous method to examine the exactness of the analysis. Moreover, the numerical results are compared with the experimental ones.     

Adsorption of aromatic amines and o-substituted derivatives of phenol from organic solutions by activated carbons-effect of surface acidity

In order to study the effect of surface acidity of activated carbons on their adsorption characteristics, three kinds of aromatic amines and four kinds of o-substituted phenols were adsorbed from organic solutions by twelve kinds of activated carbons of different acidity and of known pore-structure. It was demonstrated that the surface acidity had a marked effect on the adsorption characteristics and that the effect was linked with the polarity of the solvents.     

A New Aroma-Bearing Substance from Shiitake, an Edible Mushroom

SUMMARY— Investigations on the physico-chemical properties and a sensory evaluation as a component of Shiitake flavor were carried out with lenthionine, a substance which was isolated from dried Shiitake mushroom. Lenthionine is practically insoluble in water but soluble in non-polar solvents. Its stability in an aqueous solution changes greatly with the pH of the solution.
Lenthionine was identified as a significant component in the aroma of Shiitake mushroom and its detectable threshold level is at a concentration between 0.27 and 0.53 porn in water. This new aroma-bearing substance will be used as a flavor additive in various foods.     

The effects of ce additions on the high temperature corrosion behavior of Fe-30Cr-5Al alloy in 80 Pet Na2SO4-20 Pct NaCI molten salt

High temperature corrosion tests in 80 pct Na₂SO₄-20 pct NaCI were made on five Fe-30 wt pct Cr-5 wt pct Al alloys containing various amounts of cerium up to 0.68 pct. After the corrosion tests, samples were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction and X-ray microanalysis. It was found that the surface scale formed on each sample decreased in thickness as the Ce content increased. Electron probe microanalyses suggest that this retarding behavior is related to the early formation of a Ce-induced protective scale of α-Al₂O₃. The role of Ce in promoting the formation of the α-Al₂O₃ scale is discussed.     

Electrical properties of ferromagnetic Gd3−xS4 near its Curie temperature

Nonstoichiometric $\text{Gd}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>3?</mtext><mtext>x</mtext>}}\text{S}{}_4\text{(0 <}\text{x}\text{<}\text{1}\text{3}\text{)}$, which exhibits a metallic behavior, was obtained by heating an insulating Gd₂S₃ at various temperatures under a vacuum. Electrical and magnetic properties of the samples obtained have been investigated from 4.2 K to 300 K. A maximum in resistivity was observed in the curve of resistivity vs. temperature. The temperature T_P, at which the maximum emerged, was very close to the Curie temperature T_C for the sample. An increase in resistivity at T_P, Δ_?, is proportional to ?_P exp ($\text{E}\text{k}{}_{\mathrm{B}}\text{T}{}_{\mathrm{P}}$), where ?_P is the resistivity obtained by the extrapolation from the linear portion to T_P in the ? vs. T curve. Using the relationship obtained, a model based on the formation of magnetic polaron was proposed for this system.
