Micro X-ray computed tomography (XCT) was used to analyze the 3D adhesive penetration behavior of different wood–adhesive bondlines. Three adhesives, a phenol formaldehyde (PF), a polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI), and a hybrid polyvinyl acetate (PVA), all tagged with iodine for enhanced X-ray attenuation, were used to prepare single-bondline laminates in two softwoods, Douglas-fir and loblolly pine, and one hardwood, a hybrid polar. Adhesive penetration depth was measured with two separate calculations, and results were compared with 2D fluorescent micrographs. A total of 54 XCT scans were collected, representing six replicates of each treatment type; each replicate, however, consisted of approximately 1500 individual, cross-section slices stacked along the specimen length. As these adhesives were highly modified, the presented results do not indicate typical behavior for their broader adhesive classes. Still, clear penetration differences were observed between each adhesive type, and between wood species bonded with both the PF and pMDI adhesives. Furthermore, penetration results depended on the calculation method used. Two adhesive types with noticeably different resin distributions in the cured bondline, showed relatively similar penetration depths when calculated with a traditional effective penetration equation. However, when the same data was calculated with a weighted penetration calculation, which accounts for both adhesive area and depth, the results appeared to better represent the different distributions depicted in the photomicrographs and tomograms. Additionally, individual replicate comparisons showed variation due to specimen anatomy, not easily observed or interpreted from 2D images. Finally, 3D views of segmented 3D adhesive phases offered unique, in-situ views of the cured adhesive structures. In particular, voids formed by CO2 bubbles generated during pMDI cure were clearly visible in penetrated columns of the solidified adhesive.  相似文献

This review addresses the recent developments of the processing of cellulose nanocomposites, focusing on the most used techniques, including solution casting, melt-processing of thermoplastic cellulose nanocomposites and resin impregnation of cellulose nanopapers using thermoset resins. Important techniques, such as partially dissolved cellulose nanocomposites, nanocomposite foams reinforced with nanocellulose, as well as long continuous fibers or filaments, are also addressed. It is shown how the research on cellulose nanocomposites has rapidly increased during the last 10 years, and manufacturing techniques have been developed from simple casting to these more sophisticated methods. To produce cellulose nanocomposites for commercial use, the processing of these materials must be developed from laboratory to industrially viable methods.  相似文献

Marginal lands could be utilized for increasing energy biomass production independent of industrial roundwood procurement. Dedicated energy biomass production systems on such sites would be based on low stand establishment cost, clear-cutting at an early stage, and coppice regeneration. Harvesters designed for the processing of industrial roundwood are inefficient or too costly to use in small-diameter and dense stands, while insufficient cutting capacity and uneven space distribution of trees limit the use of modified agricultural harvesters developed for short-rotation woody-crop plantations (e.g. willow). We constructed time consumption models for clear-cutting and forwarding of whole trees from un-thinned, small-diameter stands. The data originated from naturally afforested downy birch-dominated stands located in a cutaway peat production area in northern Finland. Stand age varied from 14 to 29 years and stand density was 5150–160,250 trees per hectare. In clear-cutting, a medium-sized forest harvester equipped with an accumulating felling head fitted with a circular saw disc was used, and subsequent forwarding was done using a modified medium-sized forwarder. Cutting productivity was 3–11oven-dry tons (ODt) per effective hour (E0-h), and was highly dependent on stand characteristics (e.g. mean whole-tree volume). At a distance of 300 m, for example, the productivity of forwarding in the time study plots was 6.7–10.4 ODt E0-h−1. Our study indicates that energy biomass can be harvested from young downy birch thickets efficiently by clear-cutting with appropriate machinery.  相似文献

Two major residues are produced by the sugarcane industry, the fibrous fraction following juice extraction (bagasse), and the harvest residue (straw). The structures of the lignins from these residues were studied by pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and derivatization followed by reductive cleavage (DFRC). Whereas the lignin from bagasse has a syringyl-rich p-hydroxyphenyl:guaiacyl:syringyl (H:G:S) molar composition of 2:38:60, the lignin from straw is guaiacyl-rich (H:G:S of 4:68:28). The compositional differences were also reflected in the relative abundances of the different interunit linkages. Bagasse lignin was primarily β–O–4′ alkyl-aryl ether substructures (representing 83% of NMR-measurable linkages), followed by minor amounts of β–5′ (phenylcoumarans, 6%) and other condensed substructures. The lignin from straw has lower levels of β-ethers (75%) but higher relative levels of phenylcoumarans (β–5′, 15%) and dibenzodioxocins (5–5/4–O–β, 3%), consistent with a lignin enriched in G-units. Both lignins are extensively acylated at the γ-hydroxyl of the lignin side-chain (42% and 36% acylation in bagasse and straw), predominantly with p-coumarates (preferentially on S-units) but also with acetates (preferentially on G-units) to a minor extent. Tetrahydrofuran structures diagnostically arising from β–β-coupling (dehydrodimerization) of sinapyl p-coumarate or its cross-coupling with sinapyl alcohol were found in both lignins, indicating that sinapyl p-coumarate acts as a monomer participating in lignification. The flavone tricin was also found in the lignins from sugarcane, as also occurs in other grasses.  相似文献

Composite hydrogels consisting of nanofibrous bacterial cellulose (BC) embedded in a biocompatible polymeric matrix of various methacrylates were synthesized by UV polymerization using the ‘ever‐wet’ technique. The effect of monomer(s) type and ratio, system dilution at polymerization, monomer(s) hydrophilicity, crosslink density and cellulose/hydrogel ratio was investigated. The effect of BC reinforcement on equilibrium swelling depends on whether the neat gel swells more when brought into contact with water. The major improvement achieved by introduction of 1%–2% BC concerns mechanical properties. Compared with neat gels, the storage shear modulus G′ increased by a factor 10‐20, and the loss part G″ also rose significantly. The compression modulus ranged from 2 to 5.5 MPa for composites swollen to equilibrium (20‐70 wt% water). The BC‐hydrogel composites are considered for application in the tissue engineering area. Aqueous silicone‐based surfactants are widely used in the processing of synthetic fibers in textile industries since they enhance a number of functional and processing properties. In this paper the interactions between silicone‐based surfactants and textile‐relevant surfaces (polyethylene and polypropylene) were investigated by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation and the tribologic performance was evaluated by lateral force microscopy. Our results showed that the more hydrophobic polypropylene surface had higher affinity with silicone‐based lubricants than polyethylene surface. These adsorbed layers provided lubricity in textile materials when subject to shear forces and offered protection to wear and abrasion. This is explained by the fact that the hydrophobic groups in the surfactant molecules interact more effectively with the polypropylene surface via hydrophobic forces. The objective of this paper was to perform a comparative analysis of the computational intelligence algorithms to identify breast cancer in its early stages. Two types of data representations were considered: microarray based and medical imaging based. In contrast to previous researches, this research also considered the imbalanced nature of these data. It was observed that the SMO algorithm performed better for the majority of the test data, especially for microarray based data when accuracy was used as performance measure. Considering the imbalanced characteristic of the data, the Naive Bayes algorithm was seen to perform highly in terms of true positive rate (TPR). Regarding the influence of SMOTE, a well-known imbalanced data classification technique, it was observed that there was a notable performance improvement for J48, while the performance of SMO remained comparable for the majority of the datasets. Overall, the results indicated SMO as the most potential candidate for the microarray and image dataset considered in this research.  相似文献

In this study, tung oil was polymerized with a dimaleimide (4,4’-methylene-bis(N-phenylmaleimide) (MPMI) and two diacrylates (poly(propylene glycol) diacrylate (PPGDA) and bisphenol A glycerolate diacrylate (BPAGDA) via Diels-Alder reaction (DA reaction) to prepare pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs). On the one hand, the polymer of tung oil and MPMI was readily prepared however it was too rigid to serve as a PSA. On the other hand, the polymerization of tung oil with PPGDA or BPAGDA resulted in PSAs with peel strengths ranging from 0.1 to 0.2 N cm−1 and loop tacks ranging from 0.4 to 0.5 N. Nevertheless, tung oil reacted readily with acrylic acid to form adducts (TOAA) with lower content of conjugated diene groups than those of tung oil. The use of TOAAs instead of tung oil to polymerize PPGDA failed to increase the peel strength of the resulting PSAs. However, polymerizations of TOAAs with BPAGDA resulted in PSAs with much higher peel strengths and much higher loop tacks than the polymerization of tung oil with BPAGDA. In addition, the introduction of a small amount of MPMI in the polymerization of TOAA and PPGDA significantly shortened the curing time.  相似文献

Among several factors leading to biodegradation of wood, termites are one of the most damaging agents to wooden structures worldwide. To avoid environmental pollution and health problems caused by the use of synthetic pesticides, wood preservation research is currently focusing on discovery and application of termiticides derived from plants. This paper reports and discusses the use of coconut shell oil (CSO) as a potential termiticide. Termiticidal activity of CSO was assessed and compared to wood preservatives currently in use. After 18 months of field trial, all the control stakes were destroyed completely and there was damage of 34.2 % in the CSO brush coated stakes. CSO is a promising new biodegradable compound which can be utilized for the development of a termiticide of biological origin.  相似文献
