We present an analysis of a stochastic model of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor. This analysis addresses the contribution of ligand-binding-induced oligomerization, activation of src-homology 2 domain-carrying kinases and receptor internalization in the overall behaviour of the VEGF/VEGF receptor (VEGFR) system. The analysis is based upon a generalization of a Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation of the solution of the corresponding master equation. We predict that tumour-mediated overexpression of VEGFRs in the endothelial cells (ECs) of tumour-engulfed vessels leads to an increased sensitivity of the ECs to low concentrations of VEGF, thus endowing the tumour with increased resistance to anti-angiogenic treatment. 相似文献

Microstructures and mechanical properties of an AZ91D magnesium alloy prepared with semi-solid die-casting (SSDC) were characterized in as-cast conditions. The SSDC alloy exhibits a unique microstructure featuring primary α-Mg globules uniformly distributed in the matrix of fine secondary α-Mg grains and β-Mg17Al12 intermetallic. High ultimate tensile strength and elongation have been achieved before fracture. Observations on the vertical-section microstructure of the fractured sample by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that the crack mainly originated from the brittle fracture of the eutectic phase causes the interface decohesion of the ductile Mg phase, making fracture a rather critical event. Before that, the deformation of ductile α-Mg phase in the matrix as well as the “pulling out” of primary α-Mg phase combines to provide the SSDC alloy a certain strain. 相似文献

The collagen-chitosan complex nanofibers have been prepared for the first time by electrospinning. The mixed HFP/TFA (the volume ratio of 90/10) was found to be the appropriate solvent for electrospinning. The concentration of the spinning solution and the ratio of chitosan/collagen were varied and adjusted to get smooth nanofibers. It was found that the diameter of the spun fibers became thick with the concentration of the solution increasing and became fine with the ratio of the chitosan/collagen increasing. We have characterised the molecular interactions in collagen-chitosan complex by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Harmful algal blooms, which are considered a serious environmental problem nowadays, occur in coastal waters in many parts of the world. They cause acute ecological damage and ensuing economic losses, due to fish kills and shellfish poisoning as well as public health threats posed by toxic blooms. Recently, data-driven models including machine-learning (ML) techniques have been employed to mimic dynamics of algal blooms. One of the most important steps in the application of a ML technique is the selection of significant model input variables. In the present paper, we use two extensively used ML techniques, artificial neural networks (ANN) and genetic programming (GP) for selecting the significant input variables. The efficacy of these techniques is first demonstrated on a test problem with known dependence and then they are applied to a real-world case study of water quality data from Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong. These ML techniques overcome some of the limitations of the currently used techniques for input variable selection, a review of which is also presented. The interpretation of the weights of the trained ANN and the GP evolved equations demonstrate their ability to identify the ecologically significant variables precisely. The significant variables suggested by the ML techniques also indicate chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) itself to be the most significant input in predicting the algal blooms, suggesting an auto-regressive nature or persistence in the algal bloom dynamics, which may be related to the long flushing time in the semi-enclosed coastal waters. The study also confirms the previous understanding that the algal blooms in coastal waters of Hong Kong often occur with a life cycle of the order of 1–2 weeks. 相似文献

Web masters usually place certain web pages such as home pages and index pages in front of others. Under such a design, it is necessary to go through some pages to reach the destination pages, which is similar to the scenario of reaching an inner town of a peninsula through other towns at the edge of the peninsula. In this paper, we try to validate that peninsulas are a universal phenomenon in the World-Wide Web, and clarify how this phenomenon can be used to enhance web search and study web connectivity problems. For this purpose, we model the web as a directed graph, and give a proper definition of peninsulas based on this graph. We also present an efficient algorithm to find web peninsulas. Using data collected from the Chinese web by Tianwang search engine, we perform an experiment on the distribution of sizes of peninsulas and their correlations with PageRank values, outdegrees, or indegrees of the ties with other outside vertices. The results show that the peninsula structure on a web graph can greatly expedite the computation of PageRank values; and it can also significantly affect the link extraction capability and information coverage of web crawlers. 相似文献

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), synthesized by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, were used as the precursor to synthesize diamond in a pure hydrogen microwave discharge. Diamond-scratched silicon wafers, with and without precoated MWCNTs, were placed side by side on a substrate holder. Diamond was formed on both wafers with the consumption of MWCNTs. The present results suggest that the solid–gas–solid transformation mechanism is involved in this process. 相似文献
