Due to size effects the mechanical behavior of micro-components with dimensions in the range of some 100 μm and structure details of about 10 μm differs markedly from those of larger components. This is a crucial aspect for the design of micro-components for applications where demands for high strength are critical. The present study, which was performed in the frame of the Collaborative Research Centre 499 (SFB 499), approaches this issue by investigating the relationship between production process, microstructure and the mechanical properties of micro-specimens made from zirconia using two different feedstocks. The specimens were produced by a sintering process. The sintering temperature was varied between 1,300 and 1,500°C. Mechanical and tribological behavior of the specimens was determined by three-point bending tests as well as static and sliding friction tests, respectively. Properties derived from these tests were then correlated to the surface states in the specimens such as porosity, edge radius and roughness. The strength of the micro-specimens was found to be significantly influenced by these surface features. Whilst low porosity alone is not sufficient for high strength, notch effects resulting from pores as well as surface roughness can lower the strength. With increasing edge radius the strength of the material also increases. The porosity, edge radius and surface roughness were mathematically correlated with the strength to allow for a forecast. Within the SFB 499 feedstocks with specific properties were designed and reliable processes were developed to guarantee desirable surface roughness and porosity in the specimens. A characteristic bending strength of about 2,000 MPa is realizable in the micro-specimens within a good statistical reliability. The tribological tests revealed that the wear properties of the zirconia micro-components are strongly dependent on the quality of the feedstock.  相似文献

There is considerable interest in the potential for using operational research (O.R.) in developing countries. One sign of this is the formation of new societies for O.R. scientists in countries and regions where no such society had existed. Since 2003, such societies have been formed in several parts of Africa. This paper focuses on West Africa, and presents a bibliography of papers relating to applications of O.R. in the nations of this part of the continent. The paper describes the way in which the bibliography was collated and discusses the overall picture that the list of papers presents of the state of O.R. in the 18 countries that are considered.  相似文献

This paper describes a new method to calibrate the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of a generalized catadioptric camera (central or noncentral). The algorithm has two steps. The first one is the estimation of correspondences between incident lines in space and pixels (black box model calibration) in an arbitrary world reference frame. The second step is the calibration of the intrinsic parameters of the pinhole camera, the coefficients of the mirror expressed by a quadric (quadric mirror shape and the pose of the camera in relation to it), the position of the optical center of the camera in the world reference frame and its relative orientation (pose of the camera in world reference frame). A projection model relaxing Snell’s Law is derived. The deviations from Snell’s Law and the image reprojection errors are minimized by means of bundle adjustment. Information about the apparent contour of the mirror can be used to reduce the uncertainty in the estimation by introducing a new term in the cost function of the second step minimization process. Simulations and real experiments show good accuracy and robustness for this framework. However, the convergence is dependent on the initial guess as expected. A well-behaved algorithm to automatically generate the initial estimate to be used in the bundle adjustment is also presented.  相似文献

New material combinations have been introduced as the bearing surfaces of hip prostheses in an attempt to prolong their life by overcoming the problems of failure due to wear-particle-induced osteolysis. This will hopefully reduce the need for revision surgery. The study detailed here used a hip simulator to assess the volumetric wear rates of large-diameter carbon-fibre-reinforced pitch-based poly(ether-ether-ketone) (CFR-PEEK) acetabular cups articulating against alumina femoral heads. The joints were tested for 25 x 10(6) cycles. Friction tests were also performed on these joints to determine the lubrication regime under which they operate. The average volumetric wear rate of the CFR-PEEK acetabular component of 54 mm diameter was 1.16 mm(3)/10(6) cycles, compared with 38.6 mm(3)/10(6) cycles for an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene acetabular component of 28 mm diameter worn against a ceramic head. This extremely low wear rate was sustained over 25 x 10(6) cycles (the equivalent of up to approximately 25 years in vivo). The frictional studies showed that the joints worked under the mixed-boundary lubrication regime. The low wear produced by these joints showed that this novel joint couple offers low wear rates and therefore may be an alternative material choice for the reduction of osteolysis.  相似文献

The paper discusses a series of driving trials that were conducted to investigate postural stability of disabled drivers and to assess the effectiveness of a representative sample of support aids. Twenty-three disabled drivers with varying levels of physical disability and seven non disabled drivers participated in the study. The test car was equipped with transducers to measure vehicle velocity and acceleration (longitudinal and lateral), steering wheel movement and torque, and the bracing forces exerted by the driver on the steering wheel. Video cameras were installed to record postural support strategies and displacement of the driver and to record deviation of the car from the specified path. Subjective data regarding driver attitudes and acceptance were also collected through the administration of questionnaires. Findings from the study showed that support aids significantly improved driving performance and reduced physical exertion to maintain an upright driving position for disabled drivers. However, ergonomics design aspects regarding the ease of use and acceptance of the support aids by the end users were identified as obstacles to their sustained use in everyday driving.  相似文献

Modern information technologies and in particular the internet have revolutionized the patent information professionals' work in terms of speed of access and information comprehensiveness from both company internal and external digital sources. Here, I describe how the digital mindmapping technique can be used to complement existing intellectual property management software solutions to meet the challenge of optimizing and managing patent search workflows as well as to rapidly organise and access highly dynamic, heterogeneous and scattered patent information sources. Both eye catching and highly memorable and at the same time self-explanatory mindmapping examples are presented. These were designed to include basic and advanced level digital mindmapping features tailored to significantly speed up and maintain a high work quality level of patent search professionals. A special emphasis is put on the great benefit of organising and accessing the plethora of internet-based worldwide online patent registers through mindmapping, both in terms of managing the constantly changing deep links to the actual search options for e.g., legal status information, and keeping track of the offered level of content.  相似文献

Formation of densely packed thin films of semiconductor nanocrystals is advantageous for the exploitation of their unique optoelectronic properties for real-world applications. Here we investigate the fundamental role of the structure of the bridging ligand on the optoelectronic properties of the resulting hybrid film. In particular, we considered hybrid films formed using the same CdSe nanocrystals and two organic ligands that have the same bidentate dithiocarbamate binding moiety, but differ in their bridging structures, one bridged by ethylene, the other by phenylene that exhibits conjugation. Based on the results of photo-excited carrier dynamics experiments combined with theoretical calculations on the electronic states of bridged CdSe layers, we show that only the phenylene-based ligand presents a strong hybridization of the molecular HOMO state with CdSe layers, that is a marker of formation of an effective bridge. We argue that this hybridization spread favors the hopping of photo-excited carriers between nanocrystals, which may explain the reported larger photo-currents in phenylene-based hybrid films than those observed in ethylene-based ones.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of ground-based canopy reflectance measurements to detect changes in physiology and structure of vegetation in response to experimental warming and drought treatment at six European shrublands located along a North-South climatic gradient. We measured canopy reflectance, effective green leaf area index (green LAIe) and chlorophyll fluorescence of dominant species. The treatment effects on green LAIe varied among sites. We calculated three reflectance indices: photochemical reflectance index PRI [531 nm; 570 nm], normalized difference vegetation index NDVI680 [780 nm; 680 nm] using red spectral region, and NDVI570 [780 nm; 570 nm] using the same green spectral region as PRI. All three reflectance indices were significantly related to green LAIe and were able to detect changes in shrubland vegetation among treatments. In general warming treatment increased PRI and drought treatment reduced NDVI values. The significant treatment effect on photochemical efficiency of plants detected with PRI could not be detected by fluorescence measurements. However, we found canopy level measured PRI to be very sensitive to soil reflectance properties especially in vegetation areas with low green LAIe. As both soil reflectance and LAI varied between northern and southern sites it is problematic to draw universal conclusions of climate-derived changes in all vegetation types based merely on PRI measurements. We propose that canopy level PRI measurements can be more useful in areas of dense vegetation and dark soils.  相似文献

Dystroglycan (DG) is a cell surface receptor which is composed of two subunits that interact noncovalently, namely α- and β-DG. In skeletal muscle, DG is the central component of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC) that anchors the actin cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix. To date only the three-dimensional structure of the N-terminal region of α-DG has been solved by X-ray crystallography. To expand such a structural analysis, a theoretical molecular model of the murine α-DG C-terminal region was built based on folding recognition/threading techniques. Although there is no a significant (<30%) sequence homology with the N-terminal region of α-DG, protein fold recognition methods found a significant resemblance to the α-DG N-terminal crystallographic structure. Our in silico structural prediction identified two subdomains in this region. Amino acid residues ~ 500-600 of α-DG were predicted to adopt an immunoglobulin-like (Ig-like) β-sandwich fold. Such modeled domain includes the β-DG binding epitope of α-DG and, confirming our previous experimental results, suggests that the linear epitope (residues 550-565) assumes a β-strand conformation. The remaining segment of the α-DG C-terminal region (residues 601-653) is organized in a coil-helix-coil motif. A 20-ns molecular dynamics simulation in explicit water solvent provided support to the predicted Ig-like model structure. The identification of a second Ig-like domain in DG represents another important step towards a full structural and functional description of the α/β DG interface. Preliminary characterization of a novel recombinant peptide (505-600) encompassing this second Ig-like domain demonstrates that it is soluble and stable, further corroborating our in silico analysis.  相似文献

Isogeometric analysis based on non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) as basis functions preserves the exact geometry but suffers from the drawback of a rectangular grid of control points in the parameter space, which renders a purely local refinement impossible. This paper demonstrates how this difficulty can be overcome by using T-splines instead. T-splines allow the introduction of so-called T-junctions, which are related to hanging nodes in the standard FEM. Obeying a few straightforward rules, rectangular patches in the parameter space of the T-splines can be subdivided and thus a local refinement becomes feasible while still preserving the exact geometry. Furthermore, it is shown how state-of-the-art a posteriori error estimation techniques can be combined with refinement by T-splines. Numerical examples underline the potential of isogeometric analysis with T-splines and give hints for further developments.  相似文献
