Starke R. Hathaway was presented with a Distinguished Contribution for Applications in Psychology Award for his contributions to clinical psychology, which began in 1937 when he helped to organize the new University of Minnesota Hospitals Psychopathic Unit, having its primary commitment to research. Simultaneously, he began (with J. C. McKinley) to build the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, now the most thoroughly researched (over 6,000 publications) and widely used structured personality test. Equally important was his gently probing Socratic intellectual influence on graduate students, who often became leading teachers, researchers, practitioners, and administrators, spreading the influential 'Minnesota viewpoint'-- skeptical, empirical, quantitative, biological, tough-minded, and emphasizing the cognitive and existential aspects of psychotherapy years before their general acceptance.
