The manufacturing industry is facing a turbulent and constantly changing environment, with growing complexity and high levels of customisation. Any investment solution should address these problems for a dynamic market and within limited budget boundaries, so that companies try to remain competitive. The authors propose a real options model to support firms making important investment decisions, specifically decisions associated with the acquisition of new equipment aimed at allowing firms to increase their manufacturing flexibility for the production of both standard and customized products. This paper is partially based on a real operating experience related to visual finishing technology features in an industrial company that conforms to the definitions of the product mix. The authors’ motivation for this work is driven by firms’ desire to satisfy specific customer needs, and to respond to them quickly under uncertain demand. Our goal, using theories from finance, production management, and product offering management, is to conclude that there is a relevant difference between the evaluation of the technology that is to be chosen, and the potential value due to product mix adaptations that are able to provide the maximum return from investment. We address problems related to standard and customized production systems, and the decision to invest in a set of resources that will enable this choice. 相似文献

Signal words, such as DANGER, WARNING and CAUTION, are commonly used in sign and product label warnings for the purpose of conveying different levels of hazard. Previous research has focused on whether people's perceptions of connoted hazard are consistent with the levels suggested by design standards and guidelines. Most investigations have used college students to evaluate the terms; other populations who may be at greater risk have not been adequately studied. One purpose of the present research was to determine whether young children, the elderly, and non-native English speakers perceive similar connoted hazard levels from the terms as undergraduates and published guidelines. A second purpose was to assess the terms' comprehensibility using various metrics such as missing values (i.e. ratings left blank) and understandability ratings. A third purpose was to develop a list of potential signal words that probably would be understandable to members of special populations. In the first experiment, 298 fourth- to eighth-grade students and 70 undergraduates rated 43 potential signal words on how careful they would be after seeing each term. The undergraduates also rated the terms on strength and understandability. In the second experiment, 98 elders and 135 non-native English speakers rated the same set of terms. The rank ordering of the words was found to be consistent across the participant groups. In general, the younger students gave higher carefulness ratings than the undergraduates. The words that the younger children and the non-native English speakers frequently left blank were given lower understandibility ratings. Finally, a short list of terms was derived that 95% or 99% of the youngest students (fourth- and fifth-graders) and 80% of the non-native English speakers understood. Current world energy usage is trying to gradually shift away from fossil fuels due to the concerns for the climate change and environmental pollutions. Liquid energy from renewable biomass is widely regarded as one of the greener alternatives to partially fulfil the ever-growing energy demand. Contemporary research and technology has been focussing on transforming these bio-resources into efficient liquid and gaseous fuels which are compatible with existing petrochemical energy infrastructure. Due to the wide range of properties and compositions from different types of biomass, there are ample of processing routes available to cater for different demands and requirements. In addition, they can produce multi-component products which can be further upgraded into higher value products. This conceives the idea of bio-refinery where different biomass conversion processes are incorporated and proceed simultaneously at one location. However, the underlying complexity in integrating different processes with varying process conditions will undoubtly incurs prohibitive cost. Consequently, process intensification plays an important role in minimizing both the capital and operating costs associated with process integration in bio-refineries. Recently, process intensification for biodiesel production has been developing rigorously due to increasing demand for cost-cutting measures. Supercritical fluid process allows biodiesel production to be performed without any addition of catalyst. Meanwhile, catalytic in situ or reactive extraction process for biodiesel production successfully combines the extraction and reaction phase together in a single processing unit. In this review, the important characteristics and recent progress on both of the intensification processes for biodiesel production will be critically analyzed. The prospects and recent advances of supercritical reactive extraction (SRE) process which integrates both of the processes will also be discussed. This review will also scrutinize on the methods for these processes to compliment future bio-refinery setup and more efficient utilizing of all of the products generated. 相似文献

A fundamental assumption in this paper is that user satisfaction depends on product design. The approach consists of 5 steps: (1) define user satisfaction, (2) decompose product design elements, (3) conduct experiments, (4) develop relationship models, and (5) analyse critical design features. In order to demonstrate the practicability of this approach, relationship models were developed based on experimental data using a total of 60 subjects (30 American and 30 Korean subjects). In addition, critical design features and their common properties were identified for audio/visual consumer products. Similarities and differences between American and Korean consumers were discussed. The resulting relationship models can be used to predict user satisfaction and provide significant remedies for design change. 相似文献

Pesticide residues caused great threat to human body health, and all countries protected the health of human body by specifying its upper limit. However, pesticide residues were generally very low, similar to trace analysis and as low as millionth or less, the content determination of pesticide residues was a troublesome problem. With the application and promotion of tandem mass spectrometry, it was able to do trace analysis. GC–EI/MS/MS was a common method for the determination of pesticide residues. The multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was the most common quantitative method used in GC–EI/MS/MS. It has the characteristics of high sensitivity, good reproducibility, high accuracy, strong anti-interference and high ion flux. Multiple-twin precursor ions, product ions and collision energy of thirty-four pesticides were provided for MRM. It could play an important role in developing MRM method for the quantifying of 34 kinds of pesticide.
