The results of a survey describing the attitude to renewable energy supply (RES) amongst tourism accommodation providers in Queensland, Australia, are presented. A 65% response rate was achieved. Results showed that 9.2% of respondents had some form of RES, and that the majority of operators were interested in RES but mixed in opinions as to its marketing value for their operation. Tourist operators believed their industry is resistant to RES implementation due to reservations regarding RES power supply limitations, reliability and economic viability. Possession of a RES by the respondent did not affect this attitude. Analysis of variation in response with geographical position revealed a coastal versus interior difference. Likewise, a breakdown of responses according to accommodation type indicated that accommodation size had a significant bearing on operator opinion. Higher proportions of respondents from large operations such as large hotels and self-catering accommodation returned affirmative responses regarding RES marketing capabilities and confidence in RES than the smaller operations, which included small hotels, stations and villas/cabins. 相似文献

The authors examined the online construction of identity and sexuality in a large sample of conversations from monitored and unmonitored teen chat rooms. More than half of the 583 participants (identified by a distinct screen name) communicated identity information, most frequently gender. In this way, participants compensated for the text-based chat environment by providing information about themselves that would be visible and obvious in face-to-face communication. Sexual themes constituted 5% of all utterances (1 sexual comment per minute); bad or obscene language constituted 3% of the sample (1 obscenity every 2 minutes). Participants who self-identified as female produced more implicit sexual communication, participants who self-identified as male produced more explicit sexual communication. The protected environment of monitored chat (hosts who enforce basic behavioral rules) contained an environment with less explicit sexuality and fewer obscenities than the freer environment of unmonitored chat. These differences were attributable both to the monitoring process itself and to the differing populations attracted to each type of chat room (monitored: more participants self-identified as younger and female; unmonitored: more participants self-identified as older and male). Computers, particularly large ones used by finance bodies and government, are heavy users of electricity both to power the computer and to provide the environment recommended by the computer manufacturer. The power used by the environmental control equipment can be higher than that used by the computer itself. Both capital costs and running costs are high. Some cooling plants consume of the order of a megawatt of power. Recently, very expensive systems have been developed to recover waste heat from computers for use elsewhere in buildings either for hot water supplies or for space heating.This approach can only be easily applied to new custom designed installations, whereas in future most computers will be installed in existing buildings. Most heat is available from such systems in the summer when the demand is at a minimum. At best they are a palliative for an energy design which is wrong in concept.This article advocates an integrated approach to the total computer system design where all the factors, including energy consumption, are considered from the outset and their interactions considered. A working example is described designed on these principles which uses a fresh air ventilation system controlled by a microprocessor. Other advantages include automatic condition monitoring of the equipment, improved security and fire protection. The microprocessor-based environment controller is an order of magnitude cheaper, both in capital and running costs, than conventional designs.
