Building a database for product design knowledge retrieval—A case study in robotic design database

In product design process, when dealing with technical problems or initiating a new design, R&D personnel would often turn to technical database to seek inspiration. The building of a database with such documents has not been systematically dealt with. In this paper, several issues on how to build up a product design database are investigated: input source, sampling scheme and quality control. A case study of building a database for robotic design is used to demonstrate the concept. It is an archive of more than 1500 relevant technical papers. A total of 16 graduates are employed as operators in the labeling process and subsequently the hypothesis tests are utilized to process the labeling results. To ensure this database quality, the labeling consistency of each operator and the understanding of each category are tested. With the use of statistical methods, this work proposes a feasible and practical way to create such a database for product design.     

Development of a mobile robotic system for working in the double-hulled structure of a ship

Shipbuilding processes involve highly dangerous manual welding operations. Welding ship walls inside double-hulled structures presents a particularly hazardous environment for workers. This paper describes the “Rail Runner X” (RRX), a new robotic system that can move autonomously inside the walls of a double-hulled ship and automatically execute the required welding processes. The RRX robotic system is composed of a mobile platform and a welding robot consisting of a 3P3R serial manipulator. The robot is used to weld U-shaped trajectories located between two longitudinal stiffeners. The mobile platform enables traverse movements onto neighboring longitudinal stiffeners. The entire cross section of the robotic system is small enough to be placed inside the double-hulled structure via a conventional access hole from the outside shipyard floor. The overall engineering design process that led to the final robot solution developed is presented in this paper, including kinematic analysis data and experimental results for verifying the autonomous movement and welding performance.     

Methodology for capturing and formalizing DFM Knowledge

Design for manufacturing (DFM) practices lead to more competitive products from the point of view of cost, development time and quality. However, the success of considering manufacturing issues during design process would be higher if manufacturing information was more readily available and designers needed less experience to select information relevant to DFM.     

基于综合度量的Ad Hoc网络跨层路由协议

Ad Hoc网络路由协议普遍采用最短路径准则,无法有效支持多速率传输并容易导致网络局部拥塞。针对该问题,利用协议栈跨层设计的思想,提出一种基于综合度量的路由协议SMRP。该协议综合考虑链路速率值、MAC竞争度和网络队列长度多种因素选择路径,能有效利用多速率传输能力,避开拥塞节点。仿真实验结果证明,该协议能从网络吞吐量、分组时延等方面有效提高网络性能。
