The relationships between Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) and the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) with the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement (WJ-III) were examined for a sample of 119 children (87 males and 32 females) ages 6 to 16. The sample was comprised of children who were referred to a specialty clinic for evaluation. Participants were administered the WISC-III, the CAS, and the WJ-III, in that order. Results indicated that CAS/WJ-III correlations were consistently significantly higher than those found for the WISC-III/WJ-III. The four separate CAS scales added more variance above and beyond the four separate WISC-III scales than the WISC-III added above and beyond the CAS. In addition, the CAS Full Scale accounted for more unique variance and was a stronger predictor of WJ-III Academic Skills Cluster than the WISC-III Full Scale IQ. These results support the validity of the Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive theory as measured by the CAS in relation to the general intelligence model measured using the WISC-III for explaining variance in achievement for this clinical sample. With the aging of existing steel bridges and the accumulated stress cycles under traffic loads, assessment of remaining fatigue life for continuing service has become more important than ever, especially for decisions on structure replacement, deck replacement, or other major retrofits. Experience from engineering practice indicates that fatigue analysis based on specification loads and distribution factors usually underestimates the remaining fatigue life of existing bridges by overestimating the live load stress ranges. Fatigue evaluation based on field-measured stress range histograms under actual traffic load proves to be a more accurate and efficient method for existing bridges. This paper describes the application of such a method in assessing the remaining fatigue life of bridge structures. Current AASHTO specifications for fatigue evaluation of existing bridges are reviewed and compared. Case studies of three major highway bridges are discussed. Finally, a procedure is proposed for evaluating fatigue life of existing bridges through field strain measurement. 相似文献

This paper discusses how the validity of road safety evaluation studies can be assessed by analysing causal chains. A causal chain denotes the path through which a road safety measure influences the number of accidents. Two cases are examined. One involves chemical de-icing of roads (salting). The intended causal chain of this measure is: spread of salt --> removal of snow and ice from the road surface --> improved friction --> shorter stopping distance --> fewer accidents. A Norwegian study that evaluated the effects of salting on accident rate provides information that describes this causal chain. This information indicates that the study overestimated the effect of salting on accident rate, and suggests that this estimate is influenced by confounding variables the study did not control for. The other case involves a traffic club for children. The intended causal chain in this study was: join the club --> improve knowledge --> improve behaviour --> reduce accident rate. In this case, results are rather messy, which suggests that the observed difference in accident rate between members and non-members of the traffic club is not primarily attributable to membership in the club. The two cases show that by analysing causal chains, one may uncover confounding factors that were not adequately controlled in a study. Lack of control for confounding factors remains the most serious threat to the validity of road safety evaluation studies. 相似文献

The analysis of the process of collaboration is a central topic in current CSCL research. However, defining process characteristics
relevant for collaboration quality and developing instruments capable of assessing these characteristics are no trivial tasks.
In the assessment method presented in this paper, nine qualitatively defined dimensions of collaboration are rated quantitatively:
sustaining mutual understanding, dialogue management, information pooling, reaching consensus, task division, time management,
technical coordination, reciprocal interaction, and individual task orientation. The data basis for the development of these
dimensions was taken from a study in which students of psychology and medicine collaborated on a complex patient case via
a desktop-videoconferencing system. A qualitative content analysis was performed on a sample of transcribed collaboration
dialogue. The insights from this analysis were then integrated with theoretical considerations about the roles of communication,
joint information processing, coordination, interpersonal relationship, and motivation in the collaboration process. The resulting
rating scheme was applied to process data from a new sample of 40 collaborating dyads. Based on positive findings on inter-rater
reliability, consistency, and validity from this evaluation, we argue that the new method can be recommended for use in different
