Choice With Initial and Terminal Link Reinforcement: An Alternative Self-Control Paradigm.

Self-control is demonstrated when a less desirable immediate outcome is chosen to ensure a substantially better future. In a novel animal analogue of this situation, primary reinforcement was delivered in both the initial and terminal links of a concurrent chain schedule. Rats made initial link choices between equal amounts of ethanol-free or ethanol-containing milk. Choosing the ethanol-free reinforcer resulted in delivery of the larger terminal link reinforcer and was thus analogous to self-control. Self-control decreased as the delay between initial and terminal links increased. The results have implications for human choice situations where decisions are made between two immediately available reinforcement alternatives each associated with a different delayed outcome. Contracting, prompting, and reinforcing substance use disorder continuing care: A randomized clinical trial.

Although continuing care is strongly related to positive treatment outcomes for substance use disorder (SUD), participation rates are low and few effective interventions are available. In a randomized clinical trial with 150 participants (97% men), 75 graduates of a residential Veterans Affairs Medical Center SUD program who received an aftercare contract, attendance prompts, and reinforcers (CPR) were compared to 75 graduates who received standard treatment (STX). Among CPR participants, 55% completed at least 3 months of aftercare, compared to 36% in STX. Similarly, CPR participants remained in treatment longer than those in STX (5.5 vs. 4.4 months). Additionally, CPR participants were more likely to be abstinent compared to STX (57% vs. 37%) after 1 year. The CPR intervention offers a practical means to improve adherence among individuals in SUD treatment. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Evaluation of Laminated Circular Elastomeric Bearings

This paper evaluates the behavior and performance of laminated circular elastomeric bearings and compares them to those of square and rectangular bearings. The study included an experimental evaluation and a nationwide survey of state Department of Transportations on the use and performance of circular bearings and bearings in general in their states. The experimental investigation studied the bearings' behavior in compression, compression and rotation, and compression and shear. Results from this limited study showed that the three bearings have similar stress-strain behavior in compression and they are in agreement with the AASHTO LRFD guide stress–strain curves. In compression and rotation, the AASHTO LRFD substructure moments are slightly less than the measured values for circular bearings and rectangular bearings rotated about their strong axis for a compressive stress of 10.3?MPa (1.5?ksi) and slightly higher than those of rectangular bearings rotated about their weak axis. In compression and shear, the shear stiffness of circular and square bearings is in agreement with theoretical values within the range of design displacements. Results from the survey showed that many states are using circular bearings and more states would consider using them, however no maintenance or monitoring data were available on their short-term and long-term performance.     

Using internal fibre geometry to improve the performance of pin-loaded holes in composite materials

The anisotropic nature of fibre reinforced composites leads to large stress concentrations around pin-loaded holes through standard weave cloths. Proper understanding of how this anisotropic nature affects the load distribution around holes can be utilised to reduce these concentrations if sufficient thought is given to the internal fibre geometry near to the hole. Such local reinforcements need not be highly complex and can be readily produced without excessive effort, producing significant improvements in performance.

１９７６年汛前发现响水潭水库输水管竖井圆筒底部与闸室连接处的下游出现环形水平裂缝，对此当年曾加固处理。１９８６年复查时，发现竖井原处又出现了类似的环形裂缝，并有新的发展，为确保工程安全，于１９９４年３月再次加固。此次加固采用先止水，后粘钢板的加固方法，收到很好的效果。     

An experimental study on the pumping performance of molecular drag pumps

The pumping performance of molecular drag pumps (MDP) has been investigated experimentally. The experimented MDPs are a disk-type drag pump (DTDP), helical-type drag pump (HTDP) and compound drag pump (CDP), respectively. In the case of the DTDP, spiral channels of a rotor are cut on both upper surface and lower surface of a rotating disk, and the corresponding stator is a planar disk. In the case of the HTDP, the rotor has six rectangular grooves. The CDP consists with the DTDP, at lower part, and with the HTDP, at upper part. The experiments are performed in the outlet pressure range of 0.2–533 Pa. The inlet pressure and compression ratio are measured under the various conditions of outlet pressure and throughputs, and nitrogen is used for the test gas. At the outlet pressure of 0.2 Pa, the ultimate pressure has been reached to 1.0 × 10⁻² Pa for the HTDP, 1.3 × 10⁻⁴ Pa for the DTDP, and 3.6 × 10⁻⁵ Pa for the CDP. The maximum compression ratio of the CDP is much higher than those of the DTDP or HTDP. Consequently, the ultimate pressure of the CDP is the lowest one.     

Influence of geosynthetic reinforcement on the load-settlement characteristics of two-layer subgrade

The possibility of realistic prediction of two-layer subgrade load-settlement characteristics is discussed. The case of improvement of the soft subgrade properties using the geosynthetic reinforcement placed at the boundary between two different subgrade layers is analysed. In the first part of the paper, a short review of the main conclusions from experimental results dealing with the influence of geosynthetic reinforcement on the load-settlement characteristics of subgrade is presented. Then, the results of using the selected analytical membrane-action model to describe the reinforcement action in soil are discussed. The model is verified on the basis of data obtained from previously published laboratory tests. Particular attention is devoted to influencing some basic initial parameters on the accuracy of obtained results. Important problems which need intensive investigations are identified.

The dynamics of surge in compression systems

In air-compression systems, instabilities occur during operation close to their peak pressure-rise capability. However, the peak efficiency of a compression system lies close to this region of instability. A surge is a violent mode of instability where there is total breakdown of flow in the system and pressure-rise capability is lost drastically. Generally, all compression systems operate with a margin defined as the ‘surge margin’, and, consequently, system operational efficiency is lower. It is of interest to study compression-system surge to understand its dynamics in order to operate compression systems close to the instability for achieving high efficiency safely without encountering surge. Unsteady pressure data from a compression system, captured during surge oscillations, reveal many aspects of flow physics and are analysed to understand the surge dynamics of the system. A set of controlled experiments was conducted with a simple desktop experimental test set-up and essential aspects of surge dynamics have been characterised.
