The instruction mix of a CDC CYBER/74 computer in a university environment was monitored, and in this paper frequencies of execution for the most commonly used instructions are given. From these measurements we make a number of observations about several aspects of computing patterns. One observation is the fact that if we exclude the idle loop of the operating system, the percentage of occurrences for each type of instruction over various time intervals is constant. This fact is used to define a machine-level software profile (MLSP) for the type of machine operations in the given computing environment. It is shown that the MLSP could be used to find machine utilization and the extent to which software takes advantage of machine architecture, and as a consistent method to improve the performance of a machine configuration. 相似文献

Speculative execution is one of the key issues to boost the performance of future generation microprocessors. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to evaluate the effects of branch and value prediction, which allow the processor to execute instructions beyond the limits of control and true data dependences. Until now, almost all the estimations of their performance potential under different scenarios have been obtained using trace-driven or execution-driven simulation. Occasionally, some simple deterministic models have been used. We employ an analytical model based on recently introduced Fluid Stochastic Petri Nets (FSPNs) in order to capture the dynamic behavior of an ILP processor with aggressive use of prediction techniques and speculative execution. Here we define the FSPN model, derive the state equations for the underlying stochastic process and present performance evaluation results to illustrate its usage in deriving measures of interest. Our implementation-independent stochastic modeling framework reveals considerable potential for further research in this area using numerical solution of systems of partial differential equations and/or discrete-event simulation of FSPN models. 相似文献

Abstract Learning to drive a motor vehicle is important for the mobility of the majority of people in industrialized countries. Although a great deal is known about the acquisition of psychomotor skills in the laboratory and in some other practical settings, there has been little scientific study of learning to drive. One major practical question concerns the value of formal tuition with a qualified instructor and informal practice with friends or relatives. This paper reports a cross-sectional study of 805 learner drivers in the UK who had undergone at least 5 h of formal tuition to examine associations between their history of formal tuition and practice and current levels of skill and confidence as assessed by both pupils and their instructors. The results indicated an increase in instructor ratings of pupil skill with both increasing practice and tuition. However, the relationship between tuition and instructor-rated skill was only observed in pupils who had had no practice. Pupils' self-confidence did not increase with either tuition or practice; instructors' feelings of confidence in and safety with the pupil increased with pupils' prior hours of practice but not tuition. Instructors' ratings of the likelihood that pupils would pass the driving test first lime were positively associated with prior hours of practice and negatively associated with prior formal tuition. The results suggest that informal practice constitutes an important element of the process of learning to drive. Longitudinal and experimental studies are now required to confirm this finding and to establish whether recommendations should be made for a component of driving tuition involving supervised practice. 相似文献

Over the past few decades, our industrial age has entered into an important phase in its evolution: innovation. While innovation could proclaim underlying political and strategic intentions when it was still in the early stages, it must now assert itself in the form of tangible and measurable methodological approaches backed by tools that are designed to provide stakeholders with services at every phase of the innovation process. The world of standardization has already perceived the need to standardize and measure innovation. However, it has perhaps not yet anticipated that any form of measurement is only meaningful if our computing tools have been sufficiently developed to cope with this evolution. Indeed, while the age of quality saw the emergence and firm anchoring of several tools in our industrial practice, the age of innovation is still focused on research in the fields of marketing and management, and any initiatives that dare attempt to structure its deployment via radical changes in what is currently known, practised and acknowledged in the business environment today, are thin on the ground.
