Using Timed Petri Net to Model Instruction-Level Loop Scheduling with Resource Constraints

This paper uses timed petri net to model and analyze the problem of instructionlevel loop scheduling with resource constraints,which has been proven to be an NP complete problem.First,we present a new timed Petri net model to integrate functional unit allocation,register allocation and spilling into a unified theoretical framework.Then we develop a state subgraph,called Register Allocation Solution Graph,which can effectively describe the major behavior of our new model.the main property of this state subgraph is that the number of all its nodes is polynomial.Finally we present and prove that the optimum loop schedules can be found with polynomial computation complexity,for almost all practical loop programs.Our work lightens a new idea of finding the optimum loop schedules.     

Performance of lazy combinator graph reduction

The performance of program-derived combinator graph reduction is known to be superior to that of graph reduction based on a fixed set of standard combinators. The major advantage of program-derived combinator reduction is that it uses less transient store than standard combinator reduction. We show on what activities a combinator reduction algorithm spends its execution time. Based on this analysis we show that it depends to a large extent on the application how much faster a program will run if program-derived combinators are used instead of standard combinators. The analysis is based on experimental evidence obtained from a small bench-mark of medium-size functional programs. Performance gains of up to 11 x are reported for target architectures on which each memory reference consumes one unit of time. The results are valid for implementations of combinator graph reduction that use binary graphs.

Integrated information processing for manufacturing—from CAD/CAM to CIM

The trend to integrated information processing (CAD/ CAM) leads to some new requiements. Consistent information processing in the presparation of production and in the production process demands an efficient division of labour between man and machine, the future-oriented engineer having to be especially prepared for this. In the present paper the resulting new demands on training and education are formulated. The essential features of integrated systems of automated information processing are characterized, and fundamental problems of the complex decision findings are explained from the angle of the manufacturing engineering. The paper is concluded by examples of solutions for the fully automated preparation and execution of production.
