A new ‘tailor-made’ methodology for the mechanical behaviour analysis of rubber-like materials: I. Kinematics measurements using a digital speckle extensometry

This paper is the first part of a work devoted to the setting-up of a methodology for the mechanical behaviour characterization of rubber-like materials, using a digital speckle extensometer. We present here the experimental approach, specific to large strain measurements. The proposed method is based on in-plane kinematics measurements using an optical extensometer. The whole two-dimensional field of in-plane displacements is obtained by a digital image processing. We discuss then the correlation calculations and how to achieve the optimal subset matching. Next, we specify how to derive the principal stretch ratios, and the accuracy on these components, issued from a subsequent numerical calibration.Finally, we present experimental data dealing with a carbon black, filled natural rubber, issued from uniaxial traction tests, pure shear tests, and tensile tests performed on double-edge notched tensile specimens.     

Spatiotemporal aspects of jerky flow in Al–Mg alloys, in relation with the Mg content

The spatiotemporal aspects of the Portevin–Le Chatelier effect in Al–Mg alloys are investigated using direct observations of the sample surface with a digital camera. Optical measurements of the surface profile using a white light interferometer allow the estimation of the local strain and strain rate associated with the bands. The effect of Mg content on instability characteristics is analyzed. The reloading time is shown to depend on the Mg content only at the strain and strain rates where type C bands are observed.     

Coincidence Doppler broadening spectroscopy in polyvinyl chloride after doping with Al2O3

Coincidence Doppler broadening of annihilation radiation (CDBAR) and Vickers hardness techniques were performed to study pure Al₂O₃, pure polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and doped PVC with different concentrations of Al₂O₃ (10–50%). The CDBAR ratio curves with respect to pure PVC were presented and reflect the momentum distribution of all the samples. The peak around 14.5 ×10^?3 m_oC in the CDBAR ratio curves suggests a large contribution of positron annihilation with the Al₂O₃. There is a linear correlation between the height of this peak and the Al₂O₃ concentration. The S‐ and W‐parameters were extracted from the CDBAR spectra and increase with increasing the Al₂O₃ concentration showing discontinuity at 30% of Al₂O₃ concentration on PVC. The present data confirmed that there is no positronium formation in pure Al₂O₃ as a result of smaller S‐parameter. The Vickers hardness increases with increasing the Al₂O₃ concentration in PVC showing a linear dependence with two different slopes depend on the Al₂O₃ concentration range. A correlation between the Vickers hardness (macroscopic data) and the W‐parameter (microscopic data) was observed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008     

Mesomorphism of Lanthanide(Ⅲ) 4-Hexyloxybenzoates

The 4-alkoxybenzoic acids are well-known liquid crystals showing several mesophases(nematic,smectic C phase or both)depending on the alkoxy chain length and whereby the rigid core of the mesogen is formed by intermolecular hydrogen bonds.In this paper it is shown that the thermal behaviour of lanthanide salts of 4-hexyloxybenzoic acids depends on the lanthanide ion(Ln=La,Pr,Nd,Sm,Eu).The lanthanum(Ⅲ)and praseodymium(Ⅲ)4-hexyloxybenzoates exhibit a smectic A mesophase.No mesophase is found for the corresponding compounds of heavier lanthanides.The thermal properties of the lanthanide(Ⅲ)4-hexyloxybenzoates were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),polarising thermo-optical microscopy and synchrotron X-ray radiation.     

NIST 0:45 reflectometer

The NIST 0:45 reflectometer measures the spectral reflectance factor at an influx angle of 0° and an efflux angle of 45° of colored, nonfluorescent specimens at room temperature, with widths ranging from 3 to 10 cm and heights from 3 to 20 cm and with an uncertainty of less than 0.5 in color difference units. Measurement accuracy enhancements for wideband modulated signals

Time‐domain waveform measurements of wideband modulated signals, although attractive for communication systems modeling applications, have until now lacked the required accuracy for quantitative analysis. New developments described here enhance the accuracy of these measurements, enabling their application to communication system characterization and modeling. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Subsecond thermophysics research at the Boris Kidrich Institute Vincha

In the early eighties, at the Boris Kidrich Institute Vincha, a method for measuring specific heat and electrical resistivity of electrical conductors in the millisecond resolution range was developed for measurements from room temperature to 1900 K. Over a period of nearly 10 years, the method was applied to different materials, including pure metals, ferrous, and nickel/ chromium alloys, and to the characterization of candidate materials for thermophysical property reference standards. This paper describes the method and reviews the results obtained in specific heat and electrical resistivity studies of ferromagnetic and other materials. The paper also demonstrates capabilities of the method for describing phase transitions or anomalies in pure metals (Fe, Co, Ni) or alloys (Nichrome, austenitic stainless steel).Paper presented at the Second Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics, September 20–21, 1990, Torino, Italy.     

Measurement of metal nanolayers optical parameters using surface plasmon resonance method

The results of experimental definition of optical parameters of silver nanolayers by the method of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) are described. The goniometric installation for measurement of angular dependences of reflection of light by layered nanosructures at the attenuated internal reflection (angular spectrum of reflection) is designed. Calculation of optical parameters of nanolayers is executed taking into account the form of a curve of tin angular spectrum of reflection. The text was submitted by the authors in English.     

差分扩频技术在移动水声通信中的应用

提出了基于差分相干解调法的DS/BDPSK水声通信技术,在接收端采用差分相干解调的方法,解决了在水声通信中载波估计较难的问题,可克服传输过程中由于载波漂移产生的频率和相位误差.通过计算机仿真研究、湖试试验,验证了该系统在复杂的水声信道中具有较强的抗多径能力、抗多普勒能力,能实现低误码率通信,具有较好的有效性和鲁棒性.     

A new microsecond pulse-heating system to investigate thermophysical properties of solid and liquid metals

A new discharge system for resistive self-heating has been constructed for the measurement of accurate thermophysical properties. A constant-current pulse is used to heat metals over a time interval of 50 to 100 s, reaching temperatures up to the boiling point. New techniques have been developed to obtain sound speeds in the pulse-heated sample, emissivities, and vapor pressure. A new pyrometer allows the extension of the measured temperature range down to the melting point of copper.
