Electrodialysis experiments of the lysine fermentation waste were performed to generate demineralized feed and ammonium sulfate, which can be utilized as a fertilizer and an animal feed, respectively. The electrodialysis performances were compared for different ion exchange membranes in terms of ammonium sulfate removal rate, resistance and conductivity change. Analysis of fouling phenomena revealed that organics fouled ion exchange membranes reversibly in electrodialysis of the fermentation waste. In this study, mitigation of membrane fouling with the pulsed electric field was examined for the electrodialysis of the fermentation waste containing strong foulants. The half-wave power reduced membrane fouling significantly. For a quantitative measure of the membrane fouling tendency, a membrane fouling index for electrodialysis was used. This study showed the potential use of pulsed power as an effective fouling mitigation method for the electrodialysis of fermentation waste.  相似文献

A novel surface-modified polypropylene microfiltration membrane is investigated for its potential use in drinking water treatment. The flux decline rate of the modified membrane is substantially lower than the original polypropylene membrane for filtration of a soft, high-natural organic matter (NOM) surface water because a progressive adjustment in membrane permeability counteracts the flux decline due to fouling. In general, the prospects for reduced flux decline by membrane modification depend upon the characteristics of raw water such as hardness, particulate and NOM properties and concentration, and pretreatment strategies.  相似文献

In this study, for the first time a full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) was investigated with focus on organic compounds in activated sludge over a period of approximately 2 years. Soluble extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the sludge supernatant and permeate as well as bound EPS extracted from fouled membranes were determined photospectrometrically and revealed a typical composition of three main components in the order metals>humic acids>carbohydrates>proteins. Results showed an important influence on membrane fouling by soluble humic substances and carbohydrates in complexes with metal cations. It was found that Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) play a decisive role in natural organic matter (NOM) complexation and subsequent membrane blockage. The determination of molar mass distribution in supernatant and permeate by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) revealed a significant retention of macromolecular compounds by the porous membranes in the range of 10-50%.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental study on soluble microbial products (SMP) in membrane bioreactor (MBR) operation at different sludge retention times (SRTs). A laboratory-scale MBR was operated at SRT of 10, 20, and 40 days for treatment of readily biodegradable synthetic wastewater. The accumulation, composition, characteristics, and fouling potential of SMP at each SRT were examined. It was found that accumulation of SMP in the MBR became more pronounced at short SRTs. Carbohydrates and proteins appeared to be the components of SMP prone to accumulate in the MBR compared with aromatic compounds. The proportions of SMP with large molecular weight in supernatants and in effluents were almost identical, implying that membrane sieving did not work for most SMP. In addition, the majority of SMP was found to be composed of hydrophobic components, whose proportion in total SMP gradually increased as SRT lengthened. However, fouling potentials of SMP were relatively low at long SRTs. The hydrophilic neutrals (e.g., carbohydrates) were most likely the main foulants responsible for high fouling potentials of SMP observed at short SRTs.  相似文献

Reverse osmosis (RO) treatment has been found to be effective for a wide range of organics but generally small, polar, uncharged molecules such as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) can be poorly rejected. The rejection of seven N-nitrosoalkylamines with molecular masses in the range of 78-158Da, including NDMA, N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), N-nitrosomethylethylamine (NMEA), N-nitrosodipropylamine (NDPA), N-nitrosodibutylamine (NDBA), N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPyr), N-nitrosopiperidine (NPip) by three commercial brackish-water reverse osmosis membranes was studied in flat-sheet cells under cross-flow conditions. The membranes used were ESPA3 (Hydranautics), LFC3 (Hydranautics) and BW-30 (Dow/Filmtec), commonly used in water reuse applications. The effects of varying ionic strength and pH, dip-coating membranes with PEBAX 1657, a hydrophilic polymer, and artificial fouling with alginate on nitrosamine rejection were quantified. Rejection in deionized (DI) water increased with molecular mass from 56 to 70% for NDMA, to 80-91% for NMEA, 89-97% for NPyr, 92-98% for NDEA, and to beyond the detection limits for NPip, NDPA and NDBA. For the nitrosamines with quantifiable transmission, linear correlations (r(2)>0.97) were found between the number of methyl groups and the log(transmission), with factor 0.35 to 0.55 decreases in transmission per added methyl group. A PEBAX coating lowered the ESPA3 rejection of NDMA by 11% but increased the LFC3 and BW30 rejection by 6% and 15%, respectively. Artificially fouling ESPA3 membrane coupons with 170g/m(2) alginate decreased the rejection of NDMA by 18%. A feed concentration of 100mM NaCl decreased rejection of NDMA by 15% and acidifying the DI water feed to pH=3 decreased the rejection by 5%, whereas increasing the pH to 10 did not have a significant (p<0.05) effect.  相似文献

A range of coagulant chemicals and doses, up to 2 mg/L, were trialled on a microfiltration-based indirect potable reuse (IPR) pilot plant to evaluate their impact on membrane reversible and irreversible fouling. Jar tests revealed these doses to have negligible impact on organic matter removal, whilst scoping pilot trials showed them to have a positive impact on fouling rates. Initial trials carried out over a 6-h period suggested that ferric sulphate was the most promising of the coagulants tested with regards to irreversible fouling. Extended five-day trials using ferric sulphate at 0.5 mg/L were conducted at fluxes of 40-50 l/(m2h) (LMH). Operation at 50 LMH without coagulant resulted in rapid fouling and a subsequent shortening of the chemical cleaning interval. The addition of the ferric coagulant resulted in a reduction in both reversible and irreversible fouling to those levels experienced at 40 LMH, enabling sustainable operation. The use of low levels of coagulant thus enables the pilot plant to operate at a 25% increased flux, equating to a 20% reduction in membrane area and overall savings of >0.1 p per m3 for a seven year membrane life.  相似文献

The present investigation involves a unique, 7 year (2001–2007) long study of corrosion and deposits on superheater tubes in a biomass fired circulated fluidized bed boiler. These measurements are correlated against the different fuels used over this period. In the earlier years, the boiler was run with a mixture of different biomass fuels and peat. In later years, recycled wood was introduced into the fuel mix. The deposit growth rate approximately doubled when the recycled wood content of the fuel was increased to 10–20%. Small amounts of chlorine and zinc were found both in the recycled wood and in the deposit layer. These elements together with alkali metals from the biomass, have the potential to form sticky compounds that increase the deposit growth rate. The corrosion rate of the superheater tubes varied over the study period. A number of possible explanations for this phenomenon are discussed.  相似文献

Some in-service deterioration in any mechanical device, such as an aircraft’s gas-turbine engine, is inevitable. However, its extent and rate depend upon the qualities of design and manufacture, as well as on the maintenance/repair practices followed by the users. As a result of experiencing deterioration (of the engine as a whole or any of its components individually), an engine will seek a different steady operating point relative to that for an engine with no deterioration. This results in changes in the available thrust from the engine(s) at the same TETs and/or rotational-speeds. Any reduction in the available thrust at specified engine settings, especially maximum available thrust from the engines, will have a significant adverse effect upon the aircraft’s operational-performance. These adverse effects can be reduced by having a better knowledge of the effects of each such deterioration on the aircraft’s operational-performance. Subsequently improvements can be made in the design and manufacture of adversely-affected components as well as in maintenance and repair practices.  相似文献

Conventional water reclamation processes, such as membrane bioreactors, are not always effective in removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and/or N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), even with the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane process. A study was conducted, at a NEWater factory in Singapore, to compare a conventional ultrafiltration (UF) membrane /RO treatment process with a treatment train having the HiPOx unit, an advanced oxidation process (AOP), which was installed between the UF and the RO unit operations. By incorporating the HiPOx into the UF/RO treatment process, following results were observed; 1) increased removal of PPCPs, EDCs and NDMA, 2) improvement in ultraviolet transmission (UVT) of the RO permeate, 3) enhanced removal of TOC and color, and increased UVT of the RO brine, 4) suppression of the increase in the RO transmembrane pressure by organic fouling.  相似文献
