Significant insight into the response of granular materials can be gained by coupling accurately controlled physical tests with complementary discrete element simulations. This paper discusses a series of triaxial and plane strain laboratory compression tests on steel spheres with face-centered-cubic and rhombic packings, as well as discrete element simulations of these tests. The tests were performed on specimens of uniform-sized steel balls and on specimens of steel balls with specified distributions of ball diameters. The packing configurations are ideal and differ considerably from real sand specimens, however, studies of such idealized granular materials can yield considerable insight into the response of granular materials and the capability of discrete element simulations to capture the response. The differences in response for the two packing configurations considered illustrate the importance of fabric. The numerical simulations captured the observed laboratory response well if the particle configurations, particle sizes, and boundary conditions were accurately represented. However, the postpeak response is more difficult to capture, and it is shown to be sensitive to the coefficient of friction assumed along the specimen boundaries. The simulations of the tests on the nonuniform-sized specimens demonstrated a clear correlation between strength and coordination number.  相似文献

Cases of pipeline damage caused by landslides are common in coastal or mountainous regions, where a continuous monitoring/repair activity is planned in order to maintain their serviceability. The analysis of the soil–structure interaction phenomenon can be invoked to improve the planning and design of buried pipelines, to guide monitoring, and to reduce the risk of damage or failure. Two different approaches are considered in this paper: small scale laboratory tests and numerical simulations using the distinct element method (DEM). The experimental setup consists of a box filled with sand and water. Several experiments were performed, in which the diameter and the depth of the tube varied. The numerical simulations are divided in two separate series: in the first, the numerical model is calibrated and its reliability in reproducing the experimental tests is checked; in the second series, the direction of the relative displacement between the tube and the surrounding “numerical soil” varies over the range ±90° with respect to the horizontal. In the latter, both vertical and horizontal components of the drag force are measured and the corresponding interaction diagrams are constructed. The DEM simulations provide useful information about the shape of the failure mechanisms and the force transfer within the soil.  相似文献

Ring shear tests were conducted on five samples of different nature with a modified Imperial College type ring shear machine. The three different testing methods used, (1) individual sample testing for each normal stress, (2) increasing load multistage ring shear test, and (3) reducing load multistage ring shear test, all showed similar effective residual internal friction angle for the samples, irrespective of testing method. However, effective residual shear intercept was different according to the testing methodology. The internal friction angle did not vary, particularly after the first minimum point in the stress displacement curve, although the residual shear intercept decreased with increase in the displacement. The thickness of the shearing zone increased along with the displacement. The remolded peak shear strength for saturated conditions at field dry density varied with the consolidation history. Measurement of remolded peak shear strength was possible in a single sample using the increasing load multistage ring shear test at normal consolidation. The equilibrium water content of the sample after the ring shear test was nearly equal to the plastic limit.  相似文献

During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake the Pajaro River levees near Watsonville, Calif., spread laterally at multiple locations. Four of these locations are discussed in this paper. At one location, an industrial facility was also damaged and a dispute arose as to whether lateral spreading of the adjacent levee was the cause. Stability analyses were made of the industrial site for conditions before, during, and after the earthquake. To confirm the findings, analyses were also made of three other nearby locations where the actual deformation was documented and the subsurface conditions are well defined. The calculated levee deformations at the four locations are quite consistent with the observed movements (up to 60 cm). This experience provides increased confidence in the methods of analysis described, for the characterized subsurface conditions, and the range of ground motions experienced. Additional analyses made using the more recently developed multilinear regression lateral-spreading model (e.g., Youd et al. in 1999) yielded inconsistent results.  相似文献

The load transfer behavior along bored piles is affected by details of pile construction particularly those imposing stress and moisture changes to the surrounding soils. An investigation involving moisture migration tests, in situ horizontal stress measurements, and borehole shear and pressuremeter tests shows clear effects of construction that lead to subsequent changes in soil properties. The construction of bored piles in Singapore and the region often involves casting of concrete either in unsupported “dry” boreholes or in “wet” boreholes filled with water. It is necessary to differentiate these two extreme construction conditions in bored pile design. Based on triaxial compression and pressuremeter tests on the residual soil of the Jurong Formation in Singapore, the variation of soil modulus with shear strain can be described by a hyperbolic function. A procedure is recommended for assessing the combined effect of stress relief and soaking on soil modulus by introducing a modulus reduction factor. Modulus degradation curves from pressuremeter tests with the borehole conditions properly simulated are found capable of producing load transfer curves that are comparable to those deduced in the field.  相似文献

Processing capacity-defined as the relative ability to perform mental work in a unit of time-is a critical construct in cognitive psychology and is central to theories of visual attention. The unambiguous use of the construct, experimentally and theoretically, has been hindered by both conceptual confusions and the use of measures that are at best only coarsely mapped to the construct. However, more than 25 years ago, J. T. Townsend and F. G. Ashby (1978) suggested that the hazard function on the response time (RT) distribution offered a number of conceptual advantages as a measure of capacity. The present study suggests that a set of statistical techniques, well-known outside the cognitive and perceptual literatures, offers the ability to perform hypothesis tests on RT-distribution hazard functions. These techniques are introduced, and their use is illustrated in application to data from the contingent attentional capture paradigm. In order to reliably obtain seismic responses of as-built and repaired reinforced concrete bridge columns under near-fault ground motions, pseudodynamic testing of two bridge columns with a reduced scale of 2/5 was performed. Pseudodynamic test results reveal that a ductile member may have no chance to entirely develop its ductile behavior to dissipate seismic energy, because it may suddenly be destroyed by a significant pulse-like wave. The seismic performance of the two damaged bridge columns can be recovered after repair with carbon fiber reinforced plastics composite sheets. It is also experimentally confirmed that the flexural failure moment obtained from the pseudodynamic test is in good agreement with the plastic moment predicted by the ACI 318 code. As pseudodynamic test results are believed to be more accurate than numerical solutions, they can be considered as reference solutions in developing a finite-element model. An identical specimen was tested under cyclic loading to estimate basic properties of these columns, such as shear strength, flexural strength, and ductility, so that the seismic responses obtained from pseudodynamic tests can be thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, its hysteretic response may also be used to match a mathematical model to simulate the very complicated load-displacement relation for analysis.  相似文献

Many countries around the world have tremendous needs to repair and strengthen their transportation infrastructure. Almost everywhere, traffic loads have reached levels largely exceeding design expectations. Northern countries also experience severe winter conditions that are combined with an extensive use of deicing salts and accelerate structural deterioration. In Canada, the extent of deterioration has prompted many authorities, including the federal and provincial governments, to investigate the potential use of fiber-reinforced polymer products to extend the life of their existing structures. However, it is widely recognized that the large-scale implementation of these products is often impaired by the lack of data on their durability. This paper presents an experimental project undertaken in order to assess the durability of reinforced concrete beams externally strengthened with two types of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). The beams were first exposed to either wet-dry cycles or continuous immersion in water and then were loaded in fatigue. Finally, they were tested quasi-statically under four-point bending up to failure. The test results presented here provide some insights on the potential long-term performance of CFRP-strengthened beams exposed to severe environmental conditions.  相似文献

In an effort to assess the constructability and performance of bridges with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite decks, the short-term and long-term responses of a 207 m, five-span bridge retrofitted with four different FRP panel systems were monitored. The overall aspects of the panel systems, connection details, and construction techniques are presented prior to presentation of the observed and measured responses. Key design parameters (impact factors, girder distribution factors, and level of composite action) for FRP and reinforced concrete decks are evaluated. This paper demonstrates that FRP replacement decks are a viable alternative to reinforced concrete decks and identifies the differences in performances of various FRP deck systems. Two of the FRP panel systems were found to perform considerably better than the other deck systems. Issues that may reduce the service life of FRP deck systems are presented and discussed.  相似文献
