Understanding source effects in ADHD rating scales: Reply to DuPaul (2003).

G. J. DuPaul (see record 2003-02033-012) offered two suggestions for additional research to understand the strong source effects reported by R. Gomez, G. L Burns, J. A. Walsh, and M. A. de Moura (see record 2003-02033-001) in attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) rating scales. The first suggestion was to determine whether the source effects represent mostly bias or accuracy. The second suggestion was to minimize source effects through the development of better ADHD rating scales. Because source effects can represent bias or accuracy, it is important to minimize the bias aspect through content validation procedures prior to attempts to determine whether source effects better reflect bias or accuracy. Microstructural investigation of long-term degradation mechanisms in GFRP dowel bars for jointed concrete pavement

Steel dowel bar is used to transfer loads in concrete pavement slab. However, once the steel dowel bar corrodes, it may cause faults, such as joint freezing in concrete pavement, level differences resulting from spalling or decreased efficiency of load transfer, etc., which are the same problems experienced by typical reinforcing steel. This study evaluated the applicability of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) dowel bar as a substitute for steel dowel bar. A microstructural analysis was conducted to examine the decrease in durability of GFRP dowel bar exposed to deterioration environments. To analyze the deterioration mechanism of GFRP dowel bar, scanning electron microscopy was employed and the porosity was measured by the gas absorption method. It was concluded that the longer the GFRP dowel bar was exposed to deterioration environments, the more the interlaminar shear stress decreased. ROI-based Watermarking Scheme for JPEG 2000

A new region of interest (ROI)-based watermarking method for JPEG 2000 is presented. The watermark is embedded into the host image based on the characteristics of the ROI to protect rights to the images. This scheme integrates the watermarking process with JPEG 2000 compression procedures. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed watermark technique successfully survives JPEG 2000 compression, progressive transmission, and principal attacks.     

State of Practice for Positive Moment Connections in Prestressed Concrete Girders Made Continuous

Precast bridges are often constructed as single span for dead load, but continuous for live load. A diaphragm connection is provided for negative moment continuity. However, the connection may also be subjected to positive moments due to time-dependent effects. Because these moments may be large enough to damage the diaphragm or even the girders, a positive moment connection is often provided. This paper reports on a study to determine the types of positive moment connections used across the country and to identify potential problems with these types of connections. A questionnaire survey was conducted to assess the state of practice for precast prestressed concrete bridges made continuous. The survey provides valuable information on this type of bridge and updates a previous survey on this subject.

Tandem queues with general blocking: A unified model and comparison results

We study tandem queues with finite intermediate buffers and develop a general blocking scheme that unifies and generalizes various blocking schemes previously studied in the literature, such as manufacturing blocking, communication blocking, kanban blocking and its variations. In the general blocking scheme, job movement and service at each stage are controlled by three parameters, which represent, respectively, the upper limits (at that stage) on work-in-process inventory, finished goods inventory, and buffer space. We derive a set of recursive equations that characterize the dynamics of the system, in terms of the job completion and departure processes, and establish comparison results for these processes in the settings of stochastic ordering, variability ordering and stochastic convexity. Free of distributional assumptions, the results provide characterization of system behavior with respect to the control parameters as well as to the arrival and service processes. We also compare system performance under two different modes of operation: make-to-order versus make-to-stock, and demonstrate the trade-off between improving service and reducing inventory. Numerical studies are also presented to illustrate the diversity of performance trade-off, including composition of inventory, offered by the general model.Supported in part by NSF under grant ECS-89-96201.

New strategies for separations through reactions

Separations through reactions can provide reliable and economically viable alternatives to established methods of separation, particularly for close boiling substances. New strategies in ‘Dissociation Extraction’ and ‘Dissociation Extractive Crystallization’ for separation of close boiling acidic/basic mixtures have been highlighted. Separations with aqueous solutions of hydrotrope and aqueous micellar solutions have been brought out. Separations by membranes with facilitated transport is potentially attractive. This paper is dedicated to Dr L K Doraiswamy on his sixtieth birthday.
