Evaluation of rainfall networks using entropy: II. Application

This paper, the second in the series, applies the entropy approach to space and time evaluation of rainfall networks in Louisiana. The evaluation is made for five sampling intervals: daily, 2-day, weekly, monthly, and yearly, and for two separate seasons. In each case, the best combination of raingages is suggested and the lines of equal information (isoinformation contours) are constructed showing the areas of greater or less information transfer. The isoinformation lines are especially suitable in decisions concerning the expansion of the existing network or deleting the unnecessary raingages.     

SYMMETRIC STABLE SEQUENCES WITH MISSING OBSERVATIONS

Abstract. A procedure for evaluating optimal linear estimates of missing values in the minimum dispersion sense is proposed for stationary symmetric stable processes. Analytical expressions for the estimates are obtained for the autoregressive moving-average process and it is shown that the finite variance setting results are special cases. Cases of one and more than one missing value are considered.     

Recognizing the importance of scale in the ecology and management of riverine fish

Processes affecting fish populations range in scale from local to global. Fish response is also scale‐dependent, with some activities varying locally while others depend on large‐scale connectivity within or between watersheds. These issues are still only partly recognized, with large‐scale research often affected by non‐independent sampling, weak inference, poor model testing or model over‐extrapolation. Available multi‐scale studies can reach different conclusions about factors affecting fishes from local studies, but results vary between examples. Potential explanations are (i) effects on fishes are context‐dependent; (ii) different species or life‐stages are limited in different ways; (iii) multi‐scale studies are too few for generalization. We advocate improved use of geostatistical tools to guide sampling or interpret the spatial extent of management problems, and we illustrate this using brown trout in Welsh streams. Our strongest recommendation is that fish ecologists recognize the importance of interactions across scales in quantifying effects on fishes so that management decisions can be better based on evidence rather than judgement or extrapolation. A fast exact algorithm of searching for the upper bound of Bayesian estimates for the parameter of the exponential distribution under the condition that an a priori distribution belongs to the class of all distribution functions with two equal quantiles. Predicting postdischarge opiate abstinence from admission measures of motivation and confidence.

Admission scores from a model comprising 3 motivation factors concerning the cessation of heroin use and a confidence scale concerning postdischarge abstinence were tested for their ability to predict postdischarge outcomes in patients beginning inpatient opiate detoxification. Statistically significant prediction of abstinence from heroin 30 days after discharge and the number of heroin-free days in the 3 months following admission was based on the confidence scale and a factor concerned with externally imposed constraints on continued heroin use. The single-scale confidence measure made the largest contribution to each prediction, indicating that such scales may be potentially useful outcome predictors for postdischarge abstinence. An integer concave minimization approach for the minimum concave cost capacitated flow problem on networks

Formulating the minimum concave cost capacitated network flow problem as an integer concave minimization problem, we establish finite branch and bound algorithms, in which the branching operation is the so–called integral rectangular partition and the bounding procedure is performed by the classical minimum linear cost flow problem on subnetworks. For the special case that the flow cost function is concave on a fixed number of arcs and linear on the others, an upper bound of the running time is given.
