The British housing market: contained and exploding

While the long run trend in housing prices in the UK has been upwards since the mid-1950s the post 1998 boom represents short term volatility and threatens stability in the wider economy. This paper argues the fundamental reason driving both the rise in the real price of housing and its increased volatility is the increasing constraint on the supply or urban space applied by the British system of land use planning and its attempts to contain urban areas. Housing is an economic good and the supply of available housing space is allocated through the market. As incomes rise people try to purchase more space. This not only drives up the price of space and so housing but it also makes the supply of housing more inelastic and so the price more volatile. Housing increasingly behaves like a financial asset marker rather than a market for housing services.

The relationship among work-family conflict and enhancement, organizational work-family culture, and work outcomes for older working women.

This article examines the relationship among work-family conflict and enhancement, organizational work-family culture, and four work outcomes for 489 working women over the age of 50. Survey results from two U.S. health care organizations and one U.S. financial services organization indicate that older working women experience differing amounts of work-to-family conflict, family-to-work conflict, work-to-family enhancement, and family-to-work enhancement. Hypotheses relating organizational work-family culture to work-family conflict and enhancement were partially supported, and hypotheses relating conflict and enhancement to four work outcomes were partially supported. Work-to-family conflict and work-to-family enhancement partially mediate the relationship between organizational work-family culture and selected work outcomes. Selecting technology for investment in flexible manufacturing

Flexible manufacturing (FM) has progressed to the stage where the concepts and the available technology are well established and proven. Investment in FM can be very profitable, but must be aimed at achieving clearly defined objectives. This article describes the scope of FM and shows that the required technical specification is determined by the nature of the potential benefits.The ability to quantify all the potential benefits of FM in financial terms means that investment should not be made without a financial evaluation, but should be treated as any other investment decision. Advice is given to show companies how to identify the companywide benefits of FM and to relate these to the required technology before selecting potential suppliers.

We have examined the balance sheet of the Canadian Psychological Association - Societe Canadienne de Psychologie as of December 31, 1969 and the statement of income, expenditure and surplus for the year then ended. Our examination included a general review of the accounting procedures and such tests of accounting records and other supporting evidence as we considered necessary in the circumstances. In our opinion, these financial statements present fairly the financial position of the Association at December 31, 1969 and the results of its operations for the year then ended, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles applied on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year. Output rates among machine operators: III. A non-incentive situation in two levels of business activity.

How is output related to financial incentives and business conditions? I (see 33: 9078) reported on Plant A, II (see 34: 8462) on Plant B, and this report on Plant C. This report presents "two sets of data obtained from one plant at two different times and in two different levels of business activity." In Plant C there was no financial incentive plan, however, substandard employees were, supposedly, disciplined. Skewness of output, hypothesized as indicating "restriction of output," took place in a period of poor business conditions, but not so much later when things improved.
