After hearing two graduate students in experimental psychology extol learnedly a major theoretical position, the authors were disturbed by a phenomenon that has doubtlessly troubled other psychologists. They wonder why more or less equally intelligent and motivated students, though at different universities, adopt at least superficially but in most cases intrinsically different theoretical biases, each promoting and defending his own belief as though it were verily the most defensible and reasonable theoretical position? Are the various learning theories that different to justify enthusiastic and pious acceptance by comparably capable students? Do celebrated theorists promote their own views comprehensively and dramatically while presenting other views cursorily and sluggishly? Are graduate students really guileless and uncritical? Graduate students received the EPPS, a self-rating scale of 15 items assessing the same variables of the EPPS, and an ideal self-rating scale based on the same 15 variables. A 3-week interval between test and retest obtained lower reliability coefficients than Edwards. The findings warrant conclusions that "(a) the EPPS has satisfactory test-retest reliability; (b) the EPPS correlated with self-ratings on the variables which it purports to measure; (c) the EPPS does not correlate with ideal self-ratings on the variables which it purports to measure." Central to all theories of emotional labor is the idea that individuals follow emotional display rules that specify the appropriate expression of emotions on the job. This investigation examined antecedents and consequences of emotional display rule perceptions. Full-time working adults (N = 152) from a variety of occupations provided self-report data, and supervisors and coworkers completed measures pertaining to the focal employees. Results using structural equation modeling revealed that job-based interpersonal requirements, supervisor display rule perceptions, and employee extraversion and neuroticism were predictive of employee display rule perceptions. Employee display rule perceptions, in turn, were related to self-reported job satisfaction and coworker ratings of employees' emotional displays on the job. Recently, the application of the legal concept of "due process" has been broadening. Bernard (1975) has suggested that clinical students in psychology are due a clear procedure for being judged unsuitable and dropped from their programs. At the University of Alabama, we are persuaded that these processes should also include experimental students. Certainly, there are characteristics that render people unsuitable to the profession of psychology, whether clinical or experimental. We have, therefore, adopted a procedure designed to apply at those times when faculty members feel students may be unsuitable to practice psychology: in the classroom, the laboratory, the clinic, or any other setting. This procedure is sent to students who apply to the graduate program and are under consideration for acceptance--before they commit themselves to our department. The present experiment examined the effect of a subliminally presented symbiotic gratification and a magic of believing message on academic achievement. Graduate students were randomly assigned to one of the two experimental message conditions, or to a control message condition, and received on the average 12 sessions, 10 exposures per session, of 4-msec visual subliminal presentation of one of the three messages. Each session occurred immediately prior to a lecture in either a statistics or a measurement class. Each of the courses was taught in a traditional manner by the regular faculty, who were naive regarding the experimental conditions. Objective final examinations for each course revealed statistically significant differences in favor of the symbiotic gratification experimental condition over the control condition. No differences were obtained between the symbiotic and magic of believing conditions. Research and clinical implications of the findings are also explored.
