Evolvable hardware, particularly evolvable electronic circuitry, is being vigorously explored as a means to enhance performance and survivability. However, antennas are also excellent candidates for evolvable hardware, as they are crucial components in any wireless system, and changes in the environment can seriously affect antenna performance. The evolvable antenna system in this paper shows that an evolutionary algorithm and a reconfigurable antenna can be used to optimize signal reception in-situ, i.e., in real surroundings, rather than in simulation or even on an antenna range. Several reconfigurable antenna topologies were tested, and all were able to outperform a conventional antenna.The research described in this paper was performed for the Evolvable Hardware program at the Center for Integrated Space Microsystems, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, and was sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This article reports on a project in which we browsed patents issued after January 1, 2000 to commercial enterprises or university research institutions for analog electrical circuits. We then employed genetic programming to automatically design (synthesize) entities that duplicated the functionality of five post-2000 issued patents. The automated method works from a high-level statement of the circuits intended function. The article addresses the question of what is actually delivered by the operation of the artificial problem-solving method in relation to the amount of intelligence that is supplied by the humans employing the method (something we refer to as the yield of an automated method). The article also addresses the question of the routineness of the artificial problem-solving method – that is, the amount of effort required to make the transition from problem to problem within a particular domain. The conclusion is that the artificial method routinely delivers high-yield, human-competitive (i.e., previously patented) results. 相似文献

While complete automated design is a harder problem than computer-assisted design, automated hardware reconfiguration is an even more challenging problem, because it needs to adjust to limited resources and various factors, such as noise and parasitic capacitance, a resistance and inductance. This paper presents some experimental results of on-chip automated design and reconfiguration using evolvable hardware techniques. It describes a stand-alone board level evolvable system, and its use to demonstrate on-chip synthesis of new circuits in only a few seconds. The experiments presented here indicate a recovery capability in the case of extreme environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures, that adversely affect electronics. Some of the difficulties of dealing with the real hardware are exposed, as well as challenges more generally related to automated evolution of complex electronic systems.The work described in this paper was performed at the Center for Integrated Space Microsystems, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology and was sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. 相似文献
