From Robert Q. Pollard's national leadership in deafness and mental health service delivery, advocacy, research, and training and his innovative multidisciplinary mental health traineeship program exclusively for deaf individuals to his establishment of a vibrant special interest section on deafness within APA's Division of Rehabilitation Psychology, he has led the way to providing full access to the profession and to the services of the profession for deaf individuals. His commitment to and effective advancement of a psychology open to and appropriately serving deaf individuals and other persons with disabilities substantially advances psychology in the public interest and fulfills our discipline's highest aspiration: to advance human welfare. This journal discusses the life and contributions of Robert Q. Pollard which enabled him to win the Psychology in the Public Interest Award in 1994. Carotenoids and retinoids in human nutrition.

Since the discovery of vitamin A as a fat-soluble growth factor in the early part of the century, research into carotenoids and retinoids has attracted the attention of many scientists. These two groups of compounds are still being actively studied all over the world since many gaps in knowledge exist and new frontiers are being pursued. Recent developments in studies into the possible roles of carotenoids and retinoids beyond their classical functions in vision have created a great deal of excitement in the biomedical community. This review covers a wide range of topics pertaining to these two closely related compounds. Particular emphasis is given to the functions of these compounds and their roles in human nutrition. Various aspects of vitamin A deficiency and studies on carotenoids and retinoids in cancer development and prevention are reviewed in some detail.     

A target fish community to guide river restoration

A method is proposed and demonstrated to specify a fish community to serve as a target for planning river restoration projects and as an endpoint for evaluating programme progress. Our target fish community is appropriate for small rivers in southern New England with basins characterized by dispersed human activities. Our study was part of a multi‐agency improvement effort of the Quinebaug River in southern Massachusetts and northeast Connecticut, USA. We identify fish species expected to be found in streams, lakes and river reaches of the Quinebaug River basin. An expected rank order of abundance was computed using fish surveys from rivers identified by restoration programme managers as being in a desirable condition for a human‐dominated landscape. The rank order of species was converted to expected community proportions following a theoretical log–log relation between species abundances and occurrences in complex communities. Criteria from a committee of agency and water use representatives were influential in specifying a target community; so the overall method blends policy, objective zoogeography analyses and theory‐based parameters of community structure. We believe the use of a target community can be an important element in the design and evaluation of river restoration where the aim cannot be to copy pristine, natural ecosystem properties.
