The earlier work of Calderbank and Moo-Young (1961) dealing with the liquid-phase mass transfer coefficient in gas-liquid dispersions is examined. Their well-known empirical correlations for small and large bubbles which are free to move under gravity are theoretically derived. The analyses are based on the approach for natural convection mass transfer, and include the case where the fluid is non-Newtonian. The knowledge of the microstructural evolution during exposure to high temperatures is important to understanding the mechanisms responsible for the creep resistance of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics. This includes not only the phase transformation of the SiC grains, but also the phase transformations of the oxynitride grain-boundary phases. For this study, a series of SiC specimens were prepared with varying molar ratios of AlN-Y2 O3 additives. Increased creep resistance was observed in specimens with an additive system containing a 2:3 molar ratio or 60 mol% Y2 O3 . A continuous oxide layer of Y2 Si2 O7 formed at the surface during elevated temperature testing in air. No blistering or cracking was observed in this oxide coating. Some chromium-free copper-based catalysts are tested for the gas-phase hydrogenolysis of methyl formate, in which Cu-B2O3/SiO2 catalyst is identified to be the most promising. The behaviors of Cu-B2O3/SiO2 catalysts are also examined in the slurry-phase hydrogenolysis of methyl formate, along with a discussion of the promoting effect of B2O3. Also, Cu-B2O3/SiO2 is used with potassium methoxide as a co-catalyst for the carbonylation of methanol to regenerate the potassium methoxide from potassium formate and potassium methyl carbonate. Gold catalysts prepared by impregnation of HAuCl4 on Fe2O3, ZnO, CaO, and Al2O3 and aged in a solution of Na2CO3 (IWI/Na2CO3 method) are able to catalyze the oxidation of o-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (salicylic alcohol) under mild conditions. The reaction rate is even higher than that using analogous catalysts prepared by co-precipitation. Salicylic aldehyde is the main reaction product with a selectivity >90% at 90% conversion.
