Boundary Spanning and Engineering: A Qualitative Systematic Review

Background

Engineers are often expected to span organizational, cultural, stakeholder, geographic, temporal, and other boundaries. Yet, few studies on boundary spanning have appeared in the engineering education literature, suggesting the need for improved theoretical and conceptual foundations to guide empirical studies of boundary spanning in engineering.

Purpose

To develop a more comprehensive understanding of boundary spanning, this study addresses five research questions: (a) What types of boundaries have been identified as topics of interest? (b) How are boundary spanners and boundary spanning defined? (c) What types of activities and behaviors comprise or have been linked to boundary spanning? (d) What individual competencies and characteristics have been proposed or studied as important for boundary spanning? and (e) What boundary spanning themes are most prominent in studies of engineers and other technical professionals?

Scope/Method

Using a qualitative systematic review process, we identified and analyzed 72 scholarly papers from multiple disciplines. Multiple reviewers coded each paper using a hybrid deductive‐inductive content analysis process to identify key themes related to boundary spanning.

Conclusions

The analysis resulted in a framework consisting of six boundary types, three types of roles and definitions, and five types of activities. Discussion of boundary spanning competencies was limited in the collected works, and only seven papers exclusively focused on engineers. We conclude by proposing boundary spanning as an important meta‐attribute for engineers and a promising lens for investigating engineering practice. We also relate our findings to the engineering education literature and suggest directions for future research.

非计算机专业数据结构教学的实践及创新

从非计算机专业的视角切入,基于非计算机专业学生学习数据结构存在的主要问题,探讨数据结构教学的一些实践策略以及创新思路。例如在课程教学中加入算法设计的学习,用比较法贯穿学习的始终等。通过培养学生对课程内容的兴趣,提高其学习效率、效果及应用能力。     

机器人课程建设探索和思考

阐述机器人课程建设的意义。通过对课程进行定位、调研和分析,结合首都师范大学智能科学与技术专业的发展特色,从教学内容、教学手段、考核方法等方面分析和总结机器人课程的建设情况。实践表明,机器人课程充分体现了智能科学与技术专业的核心特色,受到学生的广泛欢迎。     

基于源码分析的多核操作系统研究与人才培养实践

多核已成为处理器的主流,在传统的操作系统教学中引入操作系统如何支持多核的内容十分必要。本文从多核操作系统启动流程分析和多核操作系统调度两方面介绍基于源码分析的研究方法,借助现有的文献资料,学生不仅加深了对操作系统抽象概念的理解,也可以优化和修改内核。该方法目标准确,避免了盲目性。实践经验表明,经过几个月的高强度训练,学生的能力提升明显。     

The motivation of information technology consultants: The struggle with social dimensions and identity

Increasingly, customer companies hire external information technology (IT) consultants, often on a special project basis. These consultants are employees of professional service firms, although they receive their assignments from the hiring companies, report to them, and are supervised by them. Using semistructured interviews with 12 IT consultants in Sweden, we examine the factors that influence their work motivation, including the effect of this dual allegiance—to the service firm and to the customer company. The data indicate that the primary motivators are the variety in tasks and the opportunity to influence and/or manage an entire project. Neither monetary incentives nor the consultancy firm norms are strong motivators. A factor that affects work behavior and motivation is the subordinate identity that IT consultants must assume with their powerful clients. The article concludes with practical suggestions for managers who seek to understand what motivates employees who work at a distance, under external control. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Interactive video technology: Enhancing professional learning in initial teacher education

The University of Sussex In-School Teacher Education Project (InSTEP) uses interactive video technologies to enhance initial teacher education programmes for science trainee teachers. With four Internet Protocol cameras and mounted microphones in both school laboratories and the university teaching room, trainees and their tutors have access to live interaction with schools. This paper presents some of the findings of a 2 year evaluation of InSTEP aimed at identifying the benefits for trainee teachers. There has been an increase in the use of video material for teacher training purposes, however, trainee teachers are often intimidated by carefully selected extracts featuring experienced teachers. InSTEP activities are live and capitalise on all the opportunities associated with normal classroom practice. Literature points to InSTEP-type activities having the potential to enhance the development of trainees’ observation skills, develop reflective thinking, to provide authentic illustrations of classroom practice, enable remote observation and facilitate the coaching of trainees by mentors. A fourth generation model of evaluation was undertaken with data generated by semi-structured interviews with university tutors and mentors supported by a questionnaire and group interviews with the trainees. Our main findings point to InSTEP enhancing and accelerating the growth of trainee teachers’ professional knowledge through enabling reflective practice, facilitating collaborative learning and supporting the development of the language of pedagogy.

高等职业教育的特点是突出学生实践能力的培养,强化学生的职业技能训练。为此建立实训基地是必须的。结合河南大学信息技术实训中心的建设,从软硬件环境建设、指导教师培养和企业化管理等方面,对软件职业技术学院校内实训基的建立和管理展开探讨。     

计算机学科教师实践能力发展探究

本文根据计算机学科的特点以及培养应用型人才对专业教师工程实践能力的要求,阐述了新形势下提高教师工程实践能力的意义。在分析了计算机专业教师在实践能力方面的现状和问题之后,文章依据系统思考模式的思想,提出发展和提高专业教师实践动手能力的途径和措施,比如改善教师的组成结构、减少不必要的评比与考核等。这些改革的目标是建设一支既具有较高文化素质、业务技能素质,又具有较强动手实践能力的专业教师队伍。
