A quick procedure for model selection in the case of mixture of normal densities

The properties of robustness of the estimates based on the minimum integrated square error criterion can be exploited to set up a procedure in finding the number of the components of a mixture of Gaussian distributions. Each step of the procedure consists in the comparison between the estimates, according to maximum likelihood and minimum integrated square error criteria, of a mixture with a fixed number of components. The discrepancy between the two estimated densities is measured applying the concept of similarity between densities following from the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. A test of statistical hypothesis, based on Monte Carlo significance test, is introduced to verify the similarity between the two estimates. If their similarity is rejected, the model can be changed simply adding one more component to the mixture. Numerical examples are given and main results, arising from a simulation study carried out to check the power of the procedure featuring several experimental scenarios, are provided.     

Consequential validity of the Implicit Association Test: Comment on Blanton and Jaccard (2006).

Numeric values of psychological measures often have an arbitrary character before research has grounded their meanings, thereby providing what S. J. Messick (1995) called consequential validity (part of which H. Blanton and J. Jaccard [see record 2006-00920-003] now identify as metric meaningfulness). Some measures are predisposed by their design to acquire meanings easily, an example being the sensitivity measure of signal detection theory. Others are less well prepared, illustrated by most self-report measures of self-esteem. Counter to Blanton and Jaccard's characterization, the Implicit Association Test (IAT) has properties that predispose it to acquire consequential validity rapidly. With the IAT as the subject of over 250 publications since 1998, there is now much evidence for its consequential validity. The IAT has attracted more scholarly criticism than have other measures designed for similar purposes. The authors speculate as to why the IAT is an attractive target. 南华北盆地倪丘集凹陷油气显示特征及找油意义

南华北盆地倪丘集凹陷共施工了16口油气探井,有7口探井见油气显示,其中位于大王庄构造上的南12井试获工业油流,累计产油32.26m3.对凹陷内油气显示进行统计和分析,得出如下规律:油显示主要集中在下第三系双浮组;储集岩类型主要为中砂岩和细砂岩;油和气显示的深度分别集中在1 000~2 000m和3 000~4 000m;原油具有典型的煤成油特征;遭受过生物降解和水洗作用等次生变化.研究结果还表明,该凹陷存在至少一次煤成油气的生成、运移和聚集过程,并初步指出了在该凹陷的找油方向,即除了寻找原生煤成油油藏外,还要注意寻找次生油藏;上白垩统残留地层是凹陷内古生界源岩产生的油气向新生界圈闭运移聚集的遮隔层,为成藏的不利因素.

莺歌海盆地变密度流和喷溢流沉积及其油气勘探意义

通过详细的沉积学研究,在莺歌海盆地中央泥拱带及其向盆地边缘的过渡区发现了特征的变密度流和喷溢流沉积。区内变密度流和喷溢流沉积的沉积环境为半深海,主要表现为浊流和快速沉积的滑塌变形沉积体。变密度流沉积为灰色中—细砾岩,岩石以颗粒支撑,具有特征的正、反粒序层理,厚度大致在6~10 cm,粒度变化范围0.3~0.5 cm、0.7~0.8 cm,岩层顶面呈不规则波状。喷溢流沉积主要为陆源碎屑岩,是浅水沉积物在海平面震荡中,随着海水事件性地向盆地喷溢而进入到邻近深水盆地的沉积;沉积物呈条带状、透镜状产出,主要为黄灰色中—细砂岩,发育透镜砂和深灰色纹理,水平层理特别是透镜层理中无构造和结构,常因泄水而发生变形,这些条带和透镜体的底部基本没有侵蚀面与内波沉积物区别。莺歌海盆地变密度流和喷溢流沉积发育部位适中,大都处于盆地中央泥拱带—斜坡的过渡带,导致在深水泥质岩体系中发育大套砂质沉积,形成了良好的生、储、盖组合,是莺歌海盆地今后地层-岩性圈闭非常重要的勘探目标。     

Using confidence intervals for graphically based data interpretation.

As a potential alternative to standard null hypothesis significance testing, we describe methods for graphical presentation of data--particularly condition means and their corresponding confidence intervals--for a wide range of factorial designs used in experimental psychology. We describe and illustrate confidence intervals specifically appropriate for between-subject versus within-subject factors. For designs involving more than two levels of a factor, we describe the use of contrasts for graphical illustration of theoretically meaningful components of main effects and interactions.
