Distortion as a result of the quenching process is predominantly due to the thermal gradient and phase transformations within
the component. Compared with traditional liquid quenching, the thermal boundary conditions during gas quenching are relatively
simple to control. By adjusting the gas-quenching furnace pressure, the flow speed, or the spray nozzle configuration, the
heat-transfer coefficients can be designed in terms of both the component geometry and the quenching time. The purpose of
this research is to apply the optimization methodology to design the gas-quenching process. The design objective is to minimize
the distortion caused by quenching. Constraints on the average surface hardness, and its distribution and residual stress
are imposed. The heat-transfer coefficients are used as design variables. DEFORM-HT is used to predict material response during
quenching. The response surface method is used to obtain the analytical models of the objective function and constraints in
terms of the design variables. Once the response surfaces of the objective and constraints are obtained, they are used to
search for the optimum heat-transfer coefficients. This process is then used instead of the finite-element analysis. A one-gear

Ti3SiC2 is of interest due to its unique dual nature reminiscent of both brittle ceramics and ductile metals at ambient conditions. In this work, plate-impact experiments have been performed to study the dynamic behavior of Ti3SiC2 under shock compression up to 112 GPa by using laser velocity interferometer and electric pin techniques. Hugoniot elastic limits (HEL), spall strength, and Hugoniot equations of state have been obtained based on measured particle velocity profiles and shock wave velocities. The ratio of spall strength to HEL for Ti3SiC2 is larger than brittle ceramics but smaller than metals. This result indicates that the dual nature of Ti3SiC2 remains at least up to 10 GPa. On the other hand, the linearity of the Hugoniot equation of state, , suggests that the initial structure of Ti3SiC2 should be stable up to 112 GPa, in contrast to the result reported by Jordan et al. Wire-arc-sprayed nickel-aluminum is widely used in the aircraft industry for dimensional restoration of worn parts and as
a bond coat for thermal barrier coatings and other top coats. Some repair applications require thick coatings, which often
result in lower bond strength. A mechanism being investigated to ex-plain this decrease in bond strength is the free edge
effect, which includes both coating residual stresses and coating thickness. The layer-removal method was used to determine
experimentally the residual stresses in wire-arc-sprayed nickel-aluminum coatings of different thicknesses. Bond strength

An atomistic-continuum inhomogeneous material model for the elastic bending of metal nanocantilevers
The equivalent elastic modulus of nanocantilever can be obtained using atomistic simulation. However, the use of this modulus to predict the bending of nanocantilever results in significant error compared with direct atomistic simulation. The error originates from the surface effect. In our current work, the nanocantilever is considered as an inhomogeneous continuum material. The distributions of materials parameters at the cross-section, such as atomistic elastic constants, are calculated from atomistic simulations. These atomistic-information-based materials parameters are used as inputs to continuum model. A numerical example case validates the presented model and methodology. To correctly predict the structure-property relations of elemental nano-structures are very important for the design of nano-devices.
