Strongly typed user interfaces in an abstract data store

The UMIST Abstract Data Store is a software tool which supports abstract data types together with flexible mechanisms for specifying, for each abstract data type, alternative user interface and memory representations appropriate to different physical media. These mechanisms facilitate the definition of types, the specification of their alternative representations and the creation and manipulation of their values in a persistent fashion. The media supported may include such things as disks and visual displays and collections of these connected together via a network. This paper focuses on the mechanisms which have evolved in this environment for specifying safe user interfaces to complex data structures.     

A persistent graphics facility for the ICL PERQ

The facilities of the PS-algol programming language are described in this paper to show how they may be used to provide an integrated programming support environment. The persistent store mechanism and the secure transaction facilities provide the basic environment in which an integrated system may be implemented. In particular the paper makes use of the data type picture of PS-algol to show how such an environment may be built for a graphics system ideal for use with a medium range computer workstation. An implementation of a picture editor on the ICL PERQ workstation is described to show the utility of the system.     

A large scale network storage facility

This paper is concerned with the overall design of the Terabit File Store — a network storage facility based on a Braegen Automated Tape Library. The characteristics of the tape library — in particular its large capacity and slow access — provide both challenges and opportunities for the system designer. The use of disc cache and the optimization of file placement have been used to provide reasonable performance in the face of substantial tape handling times. Catalogue facilities have been tailored to cater for the support of large file holdings and user file back-up applications. It has been possible to automate the back-up of essential file-store information which together with automatic integrity checks, helps to minimize the damage that can be caused by faults. Considerable attention has been given to facilities that automate much of the management of the system in a network environment. Other aspects of the design discussed in the paper include protection, housekeeping and host interfacing.

With the significant investment in the global compound management capabilities and software systems, the Alderley Park facility is now fully operational supporting the AstraZeneca compound management strategy. The compound collection quality is quickly being enhanced and the scientists are learning to exploit their resource, which is more akin to a production facility, and to gain the maximum benefit from this investment.

一种存储和索引历史数据流数据的方法*

通过对流数据的抽样存储,并在内存中建立B 树结构,对抽样数据和常用聚集操作进行索引,实现了对无限数据流历史数据的抽样存储管理,有效地支持了数据流历史数据查询.     

The detection quantum efficiency of electronic image recording systems

The principles in design and operation of TV electron-image recording systems are elucidated. Using the ‘detection quantum efficiency’ (DQE) as a figure of merit, the influence of various parameters is discussed, such as single electron response, read-out noise and saturation of the camera tubes as well as the properties of digital frame stores. The analogue signal processing mode gives a DQE of about 0·8 and can be adapted to a wide range of operating conditions. Counting of normalized electron signals in digital storages allows an almost ideal image detection, which can, however, at best only be applied with a current density below 10^?13 A cm^?2. Compared to photographic recording, electronic systems offer real-time response, compatibility with computers and great flexibility of stored information. Their DQE is similar in the analogue mode but superior in the counting mode. The storage capacity, on the other hand—particularly the number of pixels—is presently still inferior to the photoplate.
