Among sugar substitutes, an important role is played by xylitol, an aliphatic pentitol provided with some interesting properties which make it a high value product for pharmaceutical, odontological and food industries. Its production by biotechnological methods is based on fermentation of agro-industrial residues and could potentially compete with the traditional chemical way. However, crystallization is an important stage of xylitol production, since in many respects it determines the yield and quality of the target product. In the present work tests were made in order to determine the best conditions to clarify fermented media, which were then subjected to isothermal crystallization in the presence or in the absence of residual xylose and varying xylitol concentration as well as cooling temperature (−10 ≤ Tc ≤ 15 °C). Besides, the kinetics of xylitol crystallization from fermented solutions was investigated as function of the initial solution supersaturation and cooling temperature. The effect of the presence of residual xylose on the rate of crystallization was also evaluated. The best clarifying treatment was found to be 20 g l−1 activated charcoal at room temperature for 1 h. The study of xylitol crystallization revealed the positive effect of the presence of residual xylose, which ensured a 1.6-fold increase in the crystallization yield (from 0.27 to 0.42). 相似文献

This study assesses interest in curricular development in new technologies among communication faculty, with a focus on doctoral-level programs. Diffusion of innovations theory explains both individual- and organizational-level factors that may account for adoption of innovations, including those stemming from new technologies. In the field of communication, media information technology programs represent an organizational-level innovation of clear importance but with uncertain faculty support, due to individual factors (e.g., interest area, age) and departmental constraints (e.g., lack of resources). In light of this, several research questions are advanced to address: (1) the current level of support for media information technology programs among communication faculty members and (2) predictors of faculty interest in having more media information technology programs. Data were collected through a random sample of faculty members who filled out a survey on the World Wide Web. Results indicate that media information technology programs are viewed by faculty as the most needed type of program in the field of communication. Findings from a logistic regression analysis also reveal several predictors of support for new technology programs, including male gender, support for organizational communication programs, support for programs focusing on mass communication, and the belief that multimedia teaching facilities are important. The implications of these findings are discussed, with an emphasis on their relevance to faculty working in communication and related fields. 相似文献

The general problem of light scattering in turbid media has been studied often. Compared to the exact solution for plane‐parallel diffusers, the Kubelka and Munk solution appears as an approximation. The photon diffusion model is also an approximate solution restricted to the case of low light absorption, for which the prior work of Silvy has been ignored. A finite element model has been applied to the dissociation of gas hydrates in porous media by hot water injection. In the first step, it was applied to calculate the temperature and saturation profiles for a two-phase convective heat transfer case. The second step involved hydrate thawing calculations with release of water and gas. Realistic results were obtained in predicting the temperature, pressure, and water saturation profiles in the hydrate medium with respect to time, when subjected to hot water injection at high pressure in a wellbore. Furthermore, the thaw front progression calculated by this scheme exhibits stable and satisfactory behavior with respect to time. 相似文献
