A resource oriented integration architecture for the Internet of Things: A business process perspective

The vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) foresees a future Internet incorporating smart physical objects that offer hosted functionality as IoT services. These services when integrated with the traditional enterprise level services form the creation of ambient intelligence for a wide range of applications. To facilitate seamless access and service life cycle management of large, distributed and heterogeneous IoT resources, service oriented computing and resource oriented approaches have been widely used as promising technologies. However, a reference architecture integrating IoT services into either of these two technologies is still an open research challenge. In this article, we adopt the resource oriented approach to provide an end-to-end integration architecture of front-end IoT devices with the back-end business process applications. The proposed architecture promises a programmer friendly access to IoT services, an event management mechanism to propagate context information of IoT devices, a service replacement facility upon service failure, and a decentralized execution of the IoT aware business processes.     

Effectiveness of Security Control Risk Assessments for Enterprises: Assess on the Business Perspective of Security Risks

ABSTRACT

Today's businesses being IT enabled, the complexity of risks affecting the business has increased manifold and the need to gauge the Information Technology risks acting on the business operations has become paramount. The business managers who run business operations need to operate securely and seamlessly leveraging Information Technology and ability to recover and resume the business without any loss of confidentiality, integrity and availability of business information/data in any event of a security incident.

There is a need to quantify the impact of the IT security risk on the critical business processes, and provide the business-level insight at the management level. It is critical to classifying the Risk Ratings as per the impact on the business operations. This approach allows the organizations to understand and prioritize the security risk management activities that make the most sense for their organization to secure the business operations instead of trying to protect against every conceivable threat.

Querying business processes with BP-QL

We present in this paper BP-QL, a novel query language for querying business processes. The BP-QL language is based on an intuitive model of business processes, an abstraction of the emerging BPEL (business process execution language) standard. It allows users to query business processes visually, in a manner very analogous to how such processes are typically specified, and can be employed in a distributed setting, where process components may be provided by distinct providers.     

Business intelligence approach to supporting strategy-making of ISP service management

The recent deregulation of telecommunication industry by the Taiwanese government has brought about the acute competition for Internet Service Providers (ISP). Taiwan’s ISP industry is characterized by the heavy pressure for raising revenue after hefty capital investments of last decade and the lack of knowledge to develop competitive strategies. To attract subscribers, all ISP dealers are making an all-out effort to improve their service management. This study proposes a Business Intelligence process for ISP dealers in Taiwan to assist management in developing effective service management strategies. We explore the customers’ usage characteristics and preference knowledge through applying the attribute-oriented induction (AOI) method on IP traffic data of users. Using the self-organizing map (SOM) method, we are able to divide customers into clusters with different usage behavior patterns. We then apply RFM modeling to calibrate customers’ value of each cluster, which will enable the management to develop direct and effective marketing strategies. For network resource management, this research mines the facility utilization over various administrative districts of the region, which could assist management in planning for effective network facilities investment. With actual data from one major ISP, we develop a BI decision support system with visual presentation, which is well received by its management staff.
