The Amygdala Modulates Hippocampus-Dependent Context Memory Formation and Stores Cue-Shock Associations.

Preexposing rats to the context facilitates subsequent contextual fear conditioning. This effect depends on the hippocampus (J. W. Rudy, R. M. Barrientos, & R. C. O'Reilly, 2002). The authors report that inactivating the basolateral region of the amygdala (BLA) by injecting muscimol, a GABAA agonist, before or after preexposure reduced this effect. In contrast, bilateral injections of anisomycin, a protein synthesis inhibitor, into BLA did not impair the consolidation of the context memory. However, when injected after fear conditioning, anisomycin impaired consolidation of both contextual and auditory-cue fear conditioning. Results are consistent with 2 ideas about the amygdala's contribution to memory: (a) It modulates memory formation in other regions of the brain, and (b) it is a storage site for cue-shock associations. Formation of C49-TiSi2 in flash memories: a nucleation controlled phenomenon?

The formation of Ti silicides has been examined in flash memories with 0.25 μm linewidth by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. It has been observed that, after the first rapid thermal process and the selective metal etch, there is no silicide on the source and on a majority of drain contacts while C49-TiSi₂ is found on the gate. A pre-amorphisation implant increases drastically the formation of C49-TiSi₂ in the drain zone while modifications of annealing conditions have little impact. These results indicate that the formation of C49-TiSi₂ is most likely controlled by nucleation and that this nucleation is sensitive to both the width and the length of the reaction zone. The formation of a Ti rich silicide may play an important role in this nucleation by decreasing the driving force for the formation of C49-TiSi₂. Curiously enough, the formation of C49-TiSi₂ appears thus as a major concern for the salicide process in flash memories.

A method of estimating the standard gibbs free energy of formation

Standard Gibbs free energy of formation (ΔG_f⁰), an important property needed in design calculations has been estimated using molar refraction, R_M. The linear relationships derived between ΔG_f⁰ and R_M tested with the data on 8 series of hydrocarbons at 228 compounds yielded average deviations comparable to the methods cited in recent literature. The method can be used as an alternative to the existing ones, because of its simplicity combined with reasonable accuracy.     

Evidence of late palaeozoic thermalwater metallization in South Yongmei Depression

This paper discusses the seafloor thermalwater spout sedimentary activity in South Yongmei Depression according to the following evidences: the Yongmei region was in an extended tectonic environment of metaplateform and locally developed intracontinental rift aulacogen in company with the activity of rich alkali, high potassium volcanics of double-peak type. Several kinds of hydrothermal sedimentary rocks and the ore-bearing sedimentary formations of copper-polymetals, iron and manganese exist in this region with a zoning feature of the seafloor thermalwater spout sedimentation. CONVECTION PROMOTION AND GEL FORMATION IN AN ULTRAFILTRATION PROCESS

Convection promotion within a tubular ceramic membrane by using the kenics static mixer is studied. The experiments were carried out with aqueous solutions of pectin and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), for Reynolds number in the range of 60-5000. From the results of these experiments it can be concluded that the presence of convection promotor decreasing the concentration of the gel layer. The experimental data are correlated satisfactorily by the equation of the general form Sh=A Re^aSc^b.     

Sodium silicate as a coke inhibitor during naphtha pyrolysis

Rates of coke formation during steam pyrolysis of naphtha have been investigated in a jet-stirred reactor both for sodium silicate coated and uncoated Inconel 600 surfaces in the temperature range of 1078–1108 K. Coke formation rates were significantly reduced on sodium silicate coated plates due to the passivation of the metal surface. However, the coking rates gradually increased with successive decokings of the coated surface.
