This paper presents an investigation into two transport timescales, i.e. the residence time and exposure time, of a conservative matter in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) using a depth integrated hydrodynamic-dispersion model. The model has been verified against field measured tidal and salinity data in three typical seasons, including the wet, dry and average rainfall seasons. The model predicted distributions of tidal wave amplitude and salinity level agree generally well with the field measurements. The model is then enhanced by including capabilities for calculating the two timescales. The numerical model predictions show that both the freshwater discharge and tidal water elevation affect significantly the values of residence time and exposure time. The return coefficient is found to be about 0.5. Using a regression analysis, an exponential function has beenderived to correlate the timescales to the freshwater discharge. In the dry season the average residence time and exposure time are up to about 6 days and 12 days, while in the wet season these values are reduced to 3 days and 5 days, respectively. Generally, in all three types of seasons, the exposure time is about two times greater than the residence time, which demonstrates that there is a high possibility for water to re-enter the PRE after leaving the estuary. Both the residence time and exposure time decrease as the initial water elevation increases, which indicates that a contaminant will stay in the PRE for a longer time if it is released at a low tide. The effects of monthly averaged wind forcing on the resident time and exposure time are also investigated.  相似文献

A second-order quantitative Monte Carlo simulation model was developed for Escherichia coli O157:H7 contamination of beef trimmings in Irish abattoirs. The assessment considers initial contamination levels, cross-contamination and decontamination events during the cattle slaughter process. The mean simulated prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 on trimmings was 2.36% and the mean simulated counts of E. coli O157:H7 on contaminated trimmings was -2.69log(10)CFU/g. A parallel validation survey provided some confidence in the model predictions. An uncertainty analysis indicated that microbial test sensitivity is a significant factor contributing to model uncertainty and requires further investigation while also indicating that risk reduction measures should be directed towards reducing the hide to carcass transfer (correlation coefficient 0.25) during dehiding and reducing the initial prevalence and counts on bovine hides (correlation coefficients 0.19 and 0.16, respectively). A characterisation of uncertainty and variability indicating that further research is required to reduce parameter uncertainty and to achieve better understanding of microbial transfer in meat plants. The model developed in this study highlights the need for further development of quantitative risk assessments in the food industry.  相似文献

This study used open‐path Fourier transform infrared (OP‐FTIR) spectroscopy to continuously assess the variation in chloroform concentrations in the air of an indoor swimming pool. Variables affecting the concentrations of chloroform in air were also monitored. The results showed that chloroform concentrations in air varied significantly during the time of operation of the swimming pool and that there were two peaks in chloroform concentration during the time of operation of the pool. The highest concentration was at 17:30, which is coincident with the time with the highest number of swimmers in the pool in a day. The swimmer load was one of the most important factors influencing the chloroform concentration in the air. When the number of swimmers surpassed 40, the concentrations of chloroform were on average 4.4 times higher than the concentration measured without swimmers in the pool. According to the results of this study, we suggest that those who swim regularly should avoid times with highest number of swimmers, in order to decrease the risk of exposure to high concentrations of chloroform. It is also recommended that an automatic mechanical ventilation system is installed to increase the ventilation rate during times of high swimmer load.  相似文献

One of the objectives of EPA's indoor air quality (IAQ) program is to provide guidance on the impact of indoor sources on IAQ. A computer model, EXPOSURE, was developed to assist in this effort. EXPOSURE calculates pollutant concentration as a function of time for each room of the building. EXPOSURE includes effects of sources, sinks, room-to-room air movement, and air exchange with the outdoors. Several experiments designed to evaluate the impact of indoor sources on IAQ are described. Measured concentrations are compared with concentrations predicted by an IAQ model. The measured concentrations are in excellent agreement with the predictions. The model predictions and the experimental data demonstrate the importance of sinks in determining long-term IAQ.  相似文献

Ergonomics interventions often focus on reducing exposure in those parts of the job having the highest exposure levels, while leaving other parts unattended. A successful intervention will thus change the form of the job exposure distribution. This disqualifies standard methods for assessing the ability of various exposure measurement strategies to correctly detect an intervention's effect on the overall job exposure of an individual worker, in particular for the safety or ergonomics practitioner who with limited resources can only collect a few measurements. This study used a non-parametric simulation procedure to evaluate the relationship between the number of measurements collected during a self-paced manufacturing job undergoing ergonomics interventions of varying effectiveness, and the probability of correctly determining whether and to which extent the interventions reduced the overall occurrence of pronounced trunk inclination, defined as an inclination of at least 20°. Sixteen video-recordings taken at random times on multiple days for each of three workers were used to estimate the time distribution of each worker's exposure to pronounced trunk inclination. Nine hypothetical ergonomics intervention scenarios were simulated, in which the occurrence of pronounced trunk inclination in the upper 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 of the job exposure distribution was reduced by 10%, 30% and 50%. Ten exposure measurement strategies were explored, collecting from one to ten pre- and post-intervention exposure samples from an individual worker. For each worker, intervention scenario and sampling strategy, data were bootstrapped from the measured (pre-intervention) and simulated (post-intervention) exposure distributions to generate empirical distributions of the estimated intervention effect. Results showed that for the one to three intervention scenarios that had the greatest effect on the overall occurrence of trunk inclination in the job, one to four pre- and post-intervention measurements, depending on worker, were sufficient to reach an 80% probability of detecting that the intervention did, indeed, have an effect. However, even for the intervention scenario that had the greatest effect on job exposure, seven or more samples were needed for two of the three workers to obtain a probability larger than 50% of estimating the magnitude of the intervention effect to within ±50% of its true size. For almost all interventions affecting 1/8 or 1/4 of the job, limited exposure sampling led to low probabilities of detecting any intervention effect, let alone its correct size.  相似文献

Semantic scene classification based only on low-level vision cues has had limited success on unconstrained image sets. On the other hand, camera metadata related to capture conditions provide cues independent of the captured scene content that can be used to improve classification performance. We consider three problems, indoor-outdoor classification, sunset detection, and manmade-natural classification. Analysis of camera metadata statistics for images of each class revealed that metadata fields, such as exposure time, flash fired, and subject distance, are most discriminative for each problem. A Bayesian network is employed to fuse content-based and metadata cues in the probability domain and degrades gracefully even when specific metadata inputs are missing (a practical concern). Finally, we provide extensive experimental results on the three problems using content-based and metadata cues to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed integrated scene classification scheme.  相似文献

At the moment there are more than 40 framesaws in use in Croatia, and many framesaw operators have a serious spine problem. Complex measurements have been carried out in order to determine the vibration level on the operator's seat. This paper reports and analyzes the measurement results of the whole-body vibration transmitted to a framesaw operator during an ordinary working day. Vibrations were measured at all operations performed during the normal framesaw working cycle. For all the measurements frequency spectra were obtained and the results graphically represented according to the ISO 2631-1-1986 recommendations. The weighted r.m.s. acceleration was also calculated and the duration of each single framesaw operation was measured. The energy-equivalent vibration level, corresponding to the total duration of exposure was calculated, too. The values so obtained were compared with the daily exposure limits according to the ISO 2631-1-1997. The measurement results showed that the framesaw operator, under the given measuring conditions, is exposed to a higher vibration level than the given daily exposure limits. Also, the energy-equivalent vibration level calculated according to the guidelines given in the new ISO 2631-1-1997 is higher than the limits recommended for an effective 4-h daily exposure.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to establish insight into work exposures that cause shoulder and neck pain among occupational groups that have low biomechanical exposure and experience work stress from client/customer contact, among other exposures. Four occupational groups were studied, in health care (n = 20), retail (n = 22), banking (n = 26), and university secretaries (n = 26), a total of 94 volunteers. Thirty-nine were classified as pain-afflicted in the shoulder and neck, while 55 were pain-free. The subjects' perceptions of biomechanical and psychosocial exposures were established by use of quantitative questionnaires and by explorative interviews with open-ended questions, covering the same themes. Heart rate and trapezius EMG were recorded over a full workday and the following leisure period. Trapezius median and static activity during work were 3.3% and 0.3% EMGmax, only marginally higher than trapezius activity in the leisure period (2.7% and 0.2% EMGmax). The quantitative questionnaire did not identify any variable that correlated with shoulder and neck pain except perceived general tension. The interviews established that the interaction with clients or customers was an important source of work stress. Such stress appeared to be a complex entity not easily characterized by established psychosocial questionnaires. The physiological variables were at most weakly elevated in periods with high stress as compared to periods with low stress. The authors caution against relying on standardized quantitative questionnaires and/or physiological recordings to characterize work stress in occupations with emotional stress through client/customer service work.  相似文献
