The mechanical, morphological behavior and water absorption characteristics of polypropylene (PP) and silica, or PP and rice‐husk, composites have been studied. The silica used in this study as filler was a commercial type produced from soluble glass or rice husks. The compatibilizing effect of PP grafted with monomethyl itaconate (PP‐g‐MMI) and/or with vinyltriethoxysilane (PP‐g‐VTES) as polar monomers on the mechanical properties and water absorption was also investigated. In general, a high loading of the studied fillers in the polymer matrix increases the stiffness and the water absorption capacity. This effect is more noticeable in the tensile modulus of the PP/silica composite with PP‐g‐VTES as compatibilizer. However, the increase of the rice‐husk charge as a natural filler in the PP matrix decreases the stiffness, and in the presence of PP‐g‐MMI as compatibilizer in PP/rice‐husk, the tensile modulus and water absorption of the composite were improved. The better adhesion and phase continuity in the PP/silica and PP/rice‐husk composites with different compatibilizers was confirmed by the morphological study. Fundamental concepts of tension stiffening are used to explain why Branson’s equation for the effective moment of inertia Ie does not predict deflection well for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete beams. The tension stiffening component in Branson’s equation is shown to depend on the ratio of gross-to-cracked moment of inertia (Ig/Icr), and gives too much tension stiffening for beams with an Ig/Icr ratio greater than 3. FRP beams typically have an Ig/Icr ratio greater than 5, leading to a much stiffer response and underprediction of computed deflections as observed by others in the past. One common approach to computing deflection of FRP reinforced concrete beams has been to use a modified form of the Branson equation. This paper presents a rational development of appropriate modification factors needed to reduce the tension stiffening component in Branson’s original expression to realistic levels. Computed deflections using this approach give reasonable results with the right modification factor, and compare well with a more general unified approach that incorporates a realistic tension stiffening model. Comparison is made with the existing and past correction factors recommended by ACI 440 for predicting deflection of FRP beams. The method presently used by ACI 440 gives reasonable estimates of deflection for glass and carbon FRP reinforced beams. However, this method underestimates deflection of aramid FRP reinforced beams and is restricted to rectangular sections. The formation of a three dimensional network of crosslinked epoxy leads all unmodified epoxies to have inherent brittleness and relatively low degradation temperatures. Polyimides, on the other hand, are widely used for applications that require high degrees of flexibility and thermal resistance. Here, we have focused on the preparation of epoxy systems cured with polyamic acids instead of traditional amino-group-containing hardening agents. The cure behavior and potential reaction mechanisms of EPON 828 resin and polyamic acid mixtures were evaluated by DSC and TGA. Thermal analysis showed a complex reaction sequence taking place in the mixture and also determined the extent of reaction of the polyamic acid with itself and the competitive reaction of the polyamic acid with the epoxy. The compositions of the mixtures were varied to see the dependence of the cure behavior on component concentrations. Solutions of the two components did not phase separate and also phase separation was not apparent either optically or microscopically in the cured samples. This phase behavior was attributed to a unique in situ reaction. A novel solvent system for the polyamic acid precursor was also used. 相似文献

Image analysis results are reported on the generation of damage in particulate reinforced metal matrix composites during compressive deformation. The technique allows the automated collection of data on the incidence of particle fracture and void formation in the matrix as a function of important microstructural parameters such as local particle volume fraction and particle size. There is a strong relationship between damage and the local volume fraction of the reinforcement proving that damage formation is accentuated in regions of particle clustering. With the SiC reinforced materials examined, there was observed to be a change in dominance of damage mechanism from particle fracture at low local volume fractions to void formation in the matrix within strongly clustered regions. The results are compared with finite element (FE) modelling of the compressive deformation of clustered particles using a simple cluster of equi-spaced particles. The FE results suggest that plastic flow is generally inhibited in clustered regions. In certain highly clustered configurations shielding is such that flow does not occur in the heart of the cluster even at high levels of average plastic strain. The modelling suggests that the change in dominance of damage mechanism is related to the dramatic increase in tensile hydrostatic stresses in the matrix with higher levels of particle clustering. 相似文献

Three distinct stages of kink band formation and propagation exist in ductile matrix composites subjected to compressive loading. These stages are called incipient kinking, transient kinking and kink band broadening. Each stage involves a different deformation mode. The mechanics governing each stage are discussed. Incipient kinking, where the peak load is attained, and kink band broadening, where the load attains a steady-state, are important in structural design. Two design philosophies are presented. Carbon black composites (CBCs) have been prepared by pyrolyzing mixture of a carbon black with polyfurfuryl alcohol and then pretreated by oxidation with nitric acid, gasification with water steam or ammoxidation. The effects of the chemical character of the carrier surface, nature of the active metal phase and pH value of the impregnation solution on the catalytic activity towards the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of thiophene of the CBC supported Mo (Co) catalysts were determined. It was stated that the catalytic properties of the CBC supported sulfides of Mo or Co and of Mo carbides are affected by the chemical character of the carrier surface. Generally, catalysts supported over basic surface CBC exhibit higher activity than those ones supported over CBC possessing acidic surface character. Co catalysts supported on acidic surface show lower activity (per mol of active metal) than Mo based ones supported on the same carrier. In the case of catalysts supported on basic CBC, Co exhibits distinctly higher activity than Mo. At the experimental conditions adopted for this study, CBC surface properties, active phase nature, and catalyst impregnation pH were found to exert a relatively small influence on both HDS and hydrogenation activities. 相似文献
