Antecedents of Successful Three-Dimensional Computer-Aided Design Implementation in Design and Construction Networks

Researchers find that the successful implementation of information systems that span organizational boundaries enhances competitive advantage. However, the process by which networks of design and construction firms implement boundary-spanning technological changes remains poorly understood. In this paper I explore the implementation of three-dimensional computer-aided design tools in 26 design and construction organizations. I analyze empirical data collected over a 7-month period to induce a set of antecedent constructs that enable the evolution from “printed sets of plans” to “virtual model” boundary objects. The findings highlight the importance of addressing regulative, technological, work, and organizational issues at the interfaces between design and construction firms when implementing boundary-spanning technological changes.

Research information: Open Building Systems: a case study

Karel Dekker from TNO Building & Construction Research in The Netherlands explains the Open Building approach for design and construction as the principles of ordering and combining subsystems to create variety and efficiency. The disentanglement of subsystems allows for alteration over time and higher possibility of user choice. The case study of a post-war housing estate in the Netherlands demonstrates how Open Building strategies combined with a flexible rent policy have been used to improve quality on three scales (neighbourhood, building and dwelling interior) and to provide residents with choices about their living conditions.

Achieving Construction Innovation through Academia-Industry Cooperation—Keys to Success

The conception, development, implementation, and commercialization of a crane-mounted vision system through close academia-industry cooperation illustrate how such joint efforts can yield research and development success. The vision system was devised to help solve the problem of blind lifts and other viewing concerns related to the operation of tower cranes on construction sites, thereby enhancing safety and productivity and saving money. In addition to other expected difficulties, the project faced the traditional skepticism of a conservative industry reluctant to adopt changes. The paper relays the chronology of the project and analyzes, stage by stage, the steps taken by the university-based developers to work in harmony with construction companies in particular, and with the industry at large, to ensure success. Lessons drawn from this experience are offered to future academician developers in the field of construction technology.
