A commercial epoxy coating was studied on steel panels and as free films to investigate water uptake using non-destructive techniques (gravimetric analysis, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy [EIS], Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy [ATR-FTIR], and Scanning Acoustic Microscopy [SAM]) after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. In epoxy free films, water uptake showed rapid absorption initially, slowing down due to the counteracting process between water uptake and leachable content. Later, a mass decrease indicated leaching dominance. On coated steel, EIS revealed rapid water absorption within 72 h, followed by slower uptake up to 336 h. The continuous increase in water content resulted from observed coating layer swelling, confirmed by SAM. ATR-FTIR analysis indicated hydrogen bonding of most absorbed water molecules to the epoxy matrix. By combining non-destructive techniques, water uptake mechanisms into the epoxy coating film were proposed. 相似文献

The present paper focuses on a simplified method to study the orientation and the anisotropy of two different alkanethiols self-assembled monolayers on gold surfaces. The alkanethiols of interest vary only by their terminal functionalities (COOH and COOCH3), thus allowing one to highlight the influence of these ending chemical groups on the final orientation of the adsorbed molecules. 11-Mercaptoundecanoic acid [HS-(CH2)10-COOH] and the methyl-11-mercaptoundecanoate [HS-(CH2)10-COOCH3] were grafted under adequate conditions to obtain a high grafting density on gold substrates. These latter, before and after the alkanethiol adsorption, were analyzed mainly by the polarization-modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) technique to access orientation angles, and by atomic force microscopy (AFM) to check the homogeneity of the grafted layer. By applying an original PM-IRRAS simplified method, the results showed an orientation closer to the normal of the surface plane in the case of the acid thiol compared with the ester one, which is probably because of the lateral hydrogen bonds established between the adjacent COOH functions. In this review, we describe the principles of the tunnel junction, self-assembled monolayer (SAM) application techniques, experimental testbed fabrication, and characterization of the films and devices. In addition, techniques for directed application, removal, and functionalization of the monolayers are discussed. Bottom-up fabrication techniques have seen increased attention because of their versatility and ease of use. These films see mechanical uses as surface modifiers and micro-scale lubricants. Advances in nanowatt electronics and ultra-low power sensors have opened up an energy harvesting niche for solutions which would have proven ineffective just some years ago. The focus of this study is the two- terminal junction which has potential applications in THz rectification for energy harvesting, medical imaging, and defense sensing. The quantum theory of operation behind these devices is touched on briefly---describing tunneling through the organic monolayers. Control of the threshold voltage and the subthreshold swing is critical for low voltage transistor operation. In this contribution, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) operating at 1 V using ultra-thin (∼4 nm), self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified aluminium oxide layers as the gate dielectric are demonstrated. A solution-processed donor–acceptor semiconducting polymer poly(3,6-di(2-thien-5-yl)-2,5-di(2-octyldodecyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (PDPP2TTT) is used as the active layer. It is shown that the threshold voltage of the fabricated transistors can be simply tuned by carefully controlling the composition of the applied SAM. The optimised OFETs display threshold voltages around 0 V, low subthreshold slopes (150 ± 5 mV/dec), operate with negligible hysteresis and show average saturated field-effect mobilities in excess of 0.1 cm2/V s at 1 V. 相似文献
