New perfectly difunctional organolithium initiators for block copolymer synthesis: 2. Difunctional polymers of dienes and of their triblocks copolymers with styrene

New organodilithium initiators were prepared in a hydrocarbon solvent in the absence of any polar additive. Although these initiators are insoluble when they are synthesized, they may be easily purified and reacted with dienes to give perfectly telechelic polydienes having unimodal distributions and low dispersity. A good agreement between experimental and theoretical molecular weights was observed. The polymer microstructures were similar to those of polymers initiated by butyllithium in the same solvent. Triblock thermoplastic elastomers were also prepared, the characteristics of which are given. The mechanical properties of a S.B.S. sample support also the claim of a good initiating ability and difunctionality of these initiators.     

An infra-red study of model compounds of poly(tetramethylene terephthalate)

An infra-red spectroscopic investigation of the poly(tetramethylene terephthalate) model compounds butyl-dibenzoate: C₆H₅COO(CH₂)₄OCOC₆H₅ (i), 1,4-bis-butyl terephthalate: HO(CH₂)₄-OCO₆H₄COO(CH₂)₄-OH (ii), α-butyl-ω-butoxyterephthalaoyl-di-(tetramethylene terephthalate): H(CH₂)₄(OCOC₆H₄COO-(CH₂)₄-)₃-OH (iii), and α-butyl-ω-butoxyterephthalaoyl-tetra-(tetra-methylene terephthalate): HO(CH₂)₄-(OCOC₆H₄COO(CH₂)₄-)₅-OH (iv) is presented. The synthesis of (i) is also described. Spectroscopic evidence indicates that the crystal conformations of the aliphatic segments in (i) and (ii) closely resemble the extended all trans beta form of PTMT. Oligomers (iii) and (iv), however, are found to be more similar to the crumpled alpha crystal phase of PTMT.

Aerobic selective oxidation of (hetero)aromatic primary alcohols to aldehydes or carboxylic acids over carbon supported platinum

The synthesis of substituted benzaldehydes, benzoic acids, heterocyclic aromatic aldehydes and acids has been studied via the oxidation of the aromatic alcohols with air under mild pressure (<20 bar) at 100 °C, in the presence of a 1.95 wt.% Pt/C catalyst. The solvent was found to play the most important role in determining the selectivity of the oxidation products. Changing the solvent enabled tuning the reaction either to the aldehyde (pure dioxane), or the carboxylic acid (dioxane/aqueous solution without or with addition of sodium hydroxide). This oxidation method allowed to effectively oxidize many substituted benzylalcohols with various electron-releasing or -attracting groups (NO₂, Me, OMe, Cl, Br, OH, phenyl, …) and heterocyclic alcohols including nitrogen and sulphur atoms (2-thiophenemethanol, 2- and 4-pyridine methanol compounds).

Formation of Zinc–Antimony-Based Spinel Phases

Formation of spinel phases in ZnO–Sb₂O₃and ZnO–Sb₂O₃–Bi₂O₃systems is studied by the use of X-ray diffraction. The formation of nonstoichiometric Zn_2.33Sb_0.67O₄phase is observed in both the systems at ∼900°C. However, in these systems, at higher temperatures ( T ≥ 1100°C), formation of the inverse spinel phase Zn₇Sb₂O₁₂is observed. The study has been extended to understand the effect of CrO₃doping on the stability of the different spinel phases in the previously mentioned systems. Interestingly, in both the systems, samples doped with CrO₃, displayed the presence of Zn_2.33Sb_0.67O₄phase <1200°C, indicating the stabilization of the spinel phase by CrO₃.     

Effects of Surface Relaxation on Enantiospecific Adsorption on Naturally Chiral Pt Surfaces

Many high Miller index metals surfaces are naturally chiral, offering opportunities for performing enantiospecific chemistry. Previous theoretical treatments of adsorption on these surfaces have used surfaces truncated from bulk crystals. This paper examines the effect of surface relaxation on enantiospecific adsorption on chiral Pt surfaces by using relaxed surface structures determined using density functional theory.     

Effect of refining on the phenolic composition of crude olive oils

By definition, virgin olive oil is consumed unrefined, although a great proportion of the olive oil produced has to be refined to render it edible. Phenolic compounds are among the substances eliminated during the refining process; in the present work these were characterized by HPLC, and their evolution during the different refining steps was studied. The complete refining process removed most polyphenols from oils, but the behavior of individual compounds at each step also was observed. o-Diphenols (hydroxytyrosol, catechol, and hydroxytyrosol acetate) and flavonoids (luteolin and apigenin) were eliminated first during the alkaline treatment. Tyrosol and 4-ethylphenol remained in the oil until the deodorization step. A large amount of phenolic compounds was discovered in the refining by-products such as soapstocks and deodorization distillates. In the latter streams, the concentrations of tyrosol and 4-ethylphenol reached up to 149 and 3720 mg/kg by-product, respectively. This high level of 4-ethylphenol and its well-known strong off-odor can interfere during further processing of the deodorization distillates, and this must be taken into account when deciding what is to become of them. Similarly, the results of this work open the possibility of recovering phenolic compounds from the “second centrifugation olive oils” by adding a new washing step prior to the refining process. By including this new step, the most polar polyphenols, hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, will diffuse from oil to water and a concentration of up to 1400 mg/L of hydroxytyrosol may be achieved.     

Response of Colorado potato beetles,Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), to volatile components of tansy,Tanacetum vulgare

The responses of Colorado potato beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), to volatile components of tansy,Tanacetum vulgare L., were investigated in order to establish a chemical basis for observed reduction in beetle populations when potatoes,Solanum tuberosum L., were interplanted with tansy. Colorado potato beetles exhibited avoidance behavior to tansy oil, volatiles from intact tansy plants, a hydrocarbon fraction of tansy oil, obtained by fractionation on alumina, and five of the 13 known components of tansy oil that were tested. One constituent of tansy oil, -pinene, attracted beetles.
