Electronic data acquisition forms in construction management

Effective management of construction projects depends on good access to and control of data, especially data pertaining to cost and schedule control functions. However, the proper design and development of automated mechanisms have not had the facility to acquire and store quality data in a timely manner. The purpose of this paper, then, is to discuss a prototype, automated data acquisition system that was developed to support an integrated project management system. The data acquisition system is composed of an integrated set of electronic forms used in conjunction with a bar coding data-entry tool.

Synthesis and characterisation of carboxylic acid and diphenylphosphine derivatives in the 1,3-diyne series: Spectral properties of polydiacetylene carboxylates

Symmetrically substituted 1,3-diynes containing hydroxyalkyl ( 1a-d ), bromoalkyl ( 1e-h ) (diphenylphosphinyl) ( 1i-k ) and carboxyalkyl ( 2a-d ) substituents have been prepared and characterised; the phosphine derivative ( 1k ) has been converted with alkyl iodides ( RI ; R = Me, Et) into bis(phosphonium) salts ( 1l and m ). During preparation of the diynedioic acid. ( 2a ), the non-centrosymmetrical diyne, HO₂CCH₂C?C—C?C(CH₂)₂OH ( 3 ), was also isolated. ⁶⁰Co γ-Irradiation of diacetylene monomers ( 2a – d ) and 10,12-tricosadiyn-1-oic acid gave the corresponding polydiacetylene derivatives ( 4a – d and 5 ), respectively. Rubidium salts of ( 4c ) and ( 4d ), a barium salt of ( 4c ), and a potassium salt of ( 5 ) were prepared and isolated; soluble potassium salts of the carboxylic acid polymers ( 4 ) were generated in aqueous solution. The effects of changes in pH on the UV/visible absorption spectra of aqueous solutions of selected carboxylic acid polydiacetylenes have been recorded, and are discussed.

Development of a Magnetic Suspension Densimeter and Measurement of the Density of Toluene

The development of a magnetic suspension densimeter that has been built for measurement of the density of compressed liquid at pressures up to 30 MPa in the temperature range 20 to 150°C is described. The densimeter was first built by the author and his coworkers at NIST. We describe here further improvements made on a second system built at NMIJ based on the same principle. The densimeter uses a small coil suspended from an electronic balance. Within the coil is placed a sample cell in which the pressurized sample and a buoy, which is a permanent magnet, are enclosed. For measurement of density, balance readings are recorded (1) with the buoy at rest and (2) with the buoy in magnetic suspension. The measurement procedure is basically a hydrostatic weighing, which is simpler than those of conventional magnetic densimetry. As an example, measurements of toluene density performed as part of an inter-laboratory comparison are presented. The data agreed with reliable literature values to within a few hundredths of a per cent.

Superconductivity and Structure

The degree of the isolation of the CuO₂ planes (e.g. distance or bond valence to the apical coordination) has been shown by quantitative algorithms to be the major factor in determining aspects of the doping curves. They include the magnitude of the optimal number of doped holes (h_op) and the corresponding T _cop. It is shown that the roots of these phenomenological laws lie in a related structural dependence of super-exchange. The latter is expressed in the pseudo-gap or Neel temperature of the undoped parent compound. A fruitful language can be developed which deals with a buildup of complex quantum chemical features by bringing two holes into vicinity of a super-exchange O, forming a “local” Cu₂O₇ pair. Structural considerations also dictate that stress is relieved by alternate orthogonal pair orientation. This leads to plaid patterns with primary and secondary channels of charge. The presence of these two types of charge channels is involved in the mechanism of superconducting charge transport. Similar structuring of doped charge into plaid patterns of “local” pairs has been proposed for “all” high T _c superconductivity. STM now gives pictorial representation of the remnants of such an electronic crystal structure. The response of these bond-ordering motifs to structural details is further discussed. These ideas supply organization to the manifold experimental situation and provide opportunities for a unifying theory for high T _c superconductivity in terms of real space structuring of “local” pairs, largely on crystal-chemical principles.
