A Novel Micro Ring Structured PPy/pTS Free Standing Film With Improved Actuation Stability

A free-standing PPy/pTS film with a novel micro ring structured surface morphology have been electropolymerized by using CTAB/SDBS catanionic vesicles as templates. Characterizations showed that the micro ring structured PPy/pTS film was chemically similar to typical PPy/pTS films, while some DBS anions were also incorporated into the film from the mixed surfactants solutions. The micro ring structured PPy/pTS showed a slightly lower conductivity than conventional PPy/pTS films, due to the incorporation of DBS anions. The micro ring structured PPy/pTS films showed improved actuation stability compared to the conventional PPy/pTS films.     

Tailoring Flavonoids’ Antioxidant Properties Through Covalent Immobilization Into Dual Stimuli Responsive Polymers

With the aim to modulate the flavonoid antioxidant properties, catechin and quercetin were covalently inserted into hydrogel networks by free radical grafting procedure. The effective conjugation of both flavonoids into the polymer chains was checked by FT-IR analyses. Water uptake measurements and calorimetric analyses proved the pH- and thermo-responsiveness. The effect of temperature on antioxidant properties were evaluated as scavenging ability and redox performance, while the determination of the ability to preserve folic acid from UV degradation proved the pH responsiveness. Data show that the matrices are more effective in the swollen than in the shrunken state.     

Developing an element free method for higher order shear deformation analysis of plates

A procedure is presented to eliminate transverse shear locking in analysis of laminated composite plates using Element Free Galerkin (EFG) method based on higher-order transverse shear deformation theory (HSDT). In the procedure, derivatives of the transverse displacement are introduced as independent variables. Thus, a formulation requiring C⁰ continuity shape functions for approximation is proposed for higher-order transverse shear deformation analysis of plates. Shear locking is avoided considering reduced integration for shear stiffness matrix; a method which is implemented in FEM. Moving Least Squares (MLS) method is utilized for shape functions and the penalty method is implemented to impose approximate boundary conditions. The present solutions are verified with other higher-order shear deformable studies. Moreover, a comparison between the present solutions with those obtained by EFG procedure based on First-order transverse Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT) is performed.     

Corrosion behaviour of sol–gel treated and painted AA2024 aluminium alloy

Design, development and scale-up of environmentally friendly coatings are very important in order to replace chromate based coatings for aluminium alloys. Barrier properties, paint adhesion and possibly self-healing ability are relevant aspects for replacement of chromate-based pre-treatments. Sol–gel materials are candidates for use in protective coating applications, as it is possible to form highly adherent and chemically inert oxide films on metal substrates.

Optimizing tape‐burnishing/wiping process of magnetic recording media through Taguchi method

For the ever‐increasing recording density in hard disk drives, ultra‐low gliding height media are required. It is an immense challenge for the tape‐burnishing/wiping process of media to reduce the asperities effectively and efficiently while no scratches occur. The purpose of this paper is to characterize and then optimize the tape‐burnishing/wiping process as so to minimize the asperities without leaving any scratches on the media surface. A Taguchi experiment design method is adopted to analyze the data and acquire an optimal level combination of process parameters. The resulting optimal combination is practically implemented in tape‐burnishing/wiping the several magnetic recording media, which reveals that the average pass ratio of 5 nm glide avalanche testing increases nearly doubly to a level of 96%.
