2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a potential non‐phthalate based bio‐renewable substitute for terephthalic acid‐based plastics. Herein, we present an investigation of the oxidation rate of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to FDCA in acetic acid medium using Co/Mn/Br catalyst. Transient concentration profiles of the reactant (HMF), intermediates [2,5‐diformylfuran (DFF), 5‐formyl‐2‐furancarboxylic acid (FFCA)], and the desired product (FDCA) were obtained for this relatively fast reaction in a stirred semi‐batch reactor using rapid in‐line sampling. Comparison of the effective rate constants for the series oxidation steps with predicted gas–liquid mass transfer coefficients reveals that except for the FFCA → FDCA step, the first two oxidation steps are subject to gas–liquid mass transfer limitations even at high stirrer speeds. Novel reactor configurations, such as a reactor in which the reaction mixture is dispersed as fine droplets into a gas phase containing oxygen, are required to overcome oxygen starvation in the liquid phase and further intensify FDCA production. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 162–171, 2017 相似文献

Estimation of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) exposure of the Spanish population from heat-processed food was performed. HMF levels in Spanish foods were obtained from the data previously published in peer-reviewed papers; in addition, it was identified which food categories contributed significantly to HMF exposure. The potential HMF exposure was calculated for three different scenarios by using individual food intakes and the minimum (scenario 1), median (scenario 2) and maximum (scenario 3) values of analytical data on the HMF content in foods. A mean HMF intake of 10 mg day?1 (corresponding to scenario 2) was obtained, which is only ten-fold lower than the tolerable daily intake. Coffee and bread are the most important food items that contribute nearly 85% to the total HMF daily exposure, although biscuits, breakfast cereals, beer, UHT milk and tomato products are also important for HMF exposure. 相似文献

Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) is a promising low cost raw material which does not compete with food prices, has attractive yields and an environmentally friendly farming. Dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment of napiergrass was effective to obtain high yields of sugars and low level of degradation by-products from hemicellulose. Detoxification with Ca(OH)2 removed inhibitors but showed sugars loss. An ethanol concentration of 21 g/L after 176 h was found from the hydrolyzate using Pichia stipitis NBRC 10063 (fermentation efficiency 66%). An additional alkaline pretreatment applied to the solid fraction remaining from the diluted acid pretreatment improved the lignin removal. The highest cellulose hydrolysis values were found with the addition of β-glucosidase and PEG 6000. The simultaneous hydrolysis and fermentation of the cellulosic fraction with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, 10% (w/v) solid concentration, β-glucosidase and PEG 6000, showed the highest ethanol concentration (24 g/L), and cellulose hydrolysis values (81%). 162 L ethanol/t of dry napiergrass were produced (overall efficiency of 52%): 128 L/t from the cellulosic fraction and 34 L/t from the hemicellulosic fraction. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Gamma radiation is known to inactivate microorganisms in various foods and thus ensures their microbial safety. In the present study, process parameters were standardized for achieving microbial decontamination of honey of Indian origin. Study was also carried out to examine the effect of gamma radiation treatment on the biochemical, antioxidant, antibacterial, and organoleptic attributes of the honey. A 15 kGy dose of gamma radiation was found to be sufficient for complete microbial decontamination of honey including spores, thus improving its microbial safety without affecting the quality attributes. 相似文献

Conversion of carbohydrates to 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) will provide a new step toward achieving renewable biomass‐based chemicals and fuels platform. Recently, the excellent yield of HMF (91.0%) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) catalyzed by sulfonated carbon was demonstrated, but the separation of HMF from the reaction mixture remains challenging because of the high boiling point of DMSO. As a solution, herein, low boiling point solvent tetrahydrofuran (THF) mixed with DMSO was used for the fructose dehydration and high yield of HMF (98.0%) was still obtained. Besides, the stability of the sulfonated carbonaceous catalyst was also confirmed. More importantly, HMF from the reaction solution was successfully separated by using simple extraction method, and high purity of HMF (ca. 96.4%) was obtained. Compared with pure DMSO solvent, the combination of low boiling point THF with DMSO not only gives higher yield of HMF, but also improves the separation efficiency and reduces environmental risk. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 2558–2566, 2013 相似文献

In this study, for the first time, the amount of 3-deoxy-D-erythro-hexos-2-ulose (3-DG) in fresh citrus and chestnut honeys was determined. 3-DG was measured as the corresponding quinoxalines after derivatization with orthophenylenediamine using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Notwithstanding the freshness of the samples, high levels of 3-DG were detected in both honeys. The comparison of 3-DG and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) concentrations, which was also quantified by RP-HPLC, showed that citrus honeys had the lowest amount of 3-DG (107 mg/kg) and the highest of HMF (16.7 mg/kg), while chestnut honeys had the opposite (398 and 1.2 mg/kg, respectively). During thermal treatment, different 3-DG and HMF trends were highlighted between the citrus and chestnut honeys; at the end, 3-DG formation was more favored with respect to HMF formation. Moreover, in citrus honeys, a good correlation between 3-DG and HMF levels was observed, which was not found in chestnut honeys, suggesting a role of the high pH values of these honeys on the degradation routes. The kinetic analysis showed the highest k value for 3-DG and HMF formation in chestnut and citrus honeys, respectively. The lowest Ea values related to 3-DG formation and the highest to HMF formation, indicating that the key intermediate 3-DG is easily formed at low temperatures, whilst the formation of HMF requires higher temperatures. For this reason, 3-DG seems to be an aging index rather than a thermal index and its use, at least for honeys at high pH values, together with HMF, could improve their quality assessment. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Processing of vegetables in the food industry usually includes dehydration as a preservation process. Industrial convective air drying of carrot can involve steam blanching of the raw product after peeling and cutting, and different stages of dehydration (first space, second space and final drying). Although the shelf‐life of carrot is significantly extended, important changes in its chemical composition can take place during dehydration since high temperatures and long times are used. This research is a preliminary study to evaluate the usefulness of β‐carotene, carbohydrates, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and 2‐furoylmethyl amino acids (2‐FM‐AA) as quality markers of dehydrated carrots. RESULTS: A considerable decrease in β‐carotene and reducing carbohydrates was observed during dehydration. HMF, absent in raw carrots, increased during the whole drying process and the highest formation was found during the steam blanching stage. 2‐FM‐AA of lysine, arginine, γ‐aminobutyric acid and alanine were progressively originated up to the second space and decreased during the final drying. CONCLUSION: The combined use of HMF and 2‐FM‐AA seems to be advantageous for the assessment of the optimal processing conditions to obtain high‐quality dehydrated carrots.
