Carbon Aerogels as Electrode Material in Supercapacitors

Due to their large specific surface area and their high electrical conductivity carbon aerogels are promising materials for electrodes in electrochemical double-layer capacitors (supercapacitor). The carbon aerogels were made via pyrolysis of resorcinol formaldehyde aerogels. The latter were prepared by supercritical and subcritical drying as well. The important findings of our investigation were, that the highest capacities of 46 F/cm³ were measured for samples with a density of about 800 kg/m³ pyrolyzed at 800°C. Also it was shown that RF-gels with molar resorcinol/catalyst ratios 1000 or higher can be dried subcritically without cracking or significant shrinkage. Carbon aerogels derived from these RF-aerogels have a small mesopore surface area, however an especially large micropore area. They provide electrical capacities which are most suitable for their use in supercapacitors.

Previously developed model for spray drying of slurry droplets with high solid content (Liang, 2001) was revised to describe correctly a boundary condition on the outer surface of droplet on basis of the rate of liquid evaporation.

Effect of Mode of Drying on Microstructure of Potato

Potato v. Irga was subjected to blanching, and thereafter was dried by convection, puff-drying, and freeze-drying. Microstructure of raw, blanched, and dried tissue was analyzed under the light microscope using computer image analysis. It was found that the tissue of the investigated variety is built up from cells much smaller than those described in literature for other cultivars. Blanching caused starch gelatinization and increase of cross-sectional area of cells. There was no evidence of broken cell walls. Convective drying resulted in cell shrinkage and some breaking of cell walls. It was estimated that some 12% of cells lost integrity during drying. Limited disintegration of the tissue caused by convective drying is attributed to small size of cells, large contact area, and high cohesive forces between cells. Puff-drying damaged the tissue much more than the convective drying. The most devastating to tissue microstructure was freeze-drying, probably freezing per se.     

Tactile display with tangential and normal skin displacement for robot-assisted surgery

This paper proposes a tactile display providing both shear and normal feedback to the fingertip for generating three-axis tactile feedback during teleoperation of a surgical robot. The display is composed of five balloons actuated by controlling the pneumatic pressure. The implemented display is 18?mm?×?18?mm?×?15?mm. This size is suitable for mounting the display onto the master controls of a surgical robot. The maximum normal and shear displacements are 2 and 1.3?mm, respectively. The proposed tactile display may provide perceivable stimuli to a human finger pad in all five directions: normal, distal, proximal, radial, and ulnar. This paper also reports on the results of psychophysical measurement of the minimum perceivable movement of the developed tactile display for each of the five directions.
