Integrating psychology and politics.

Comments on the article "A house divided? The psychology of red and blue America" by D. C. Seyle and M. L. Newman (see record 2006-11202-001). Seyle and Newman concluded that the red and blue metaphor is inaccurate and proposed a purple America strategy to better convey that the majority of people do not align themselves with political extremes. There is interdisciplinary agreement on this. Although not cited by Seyle and Newman, the findings by Professor Fiorina of Stanford University were reported by the APA Monitor on Psychology in its coverage of the 2005 APA State Leadership Conference (Murray Law, 2005). In contrast to their social psychological analysis, Seyle and Newman were incorrect in concluding that "[a]s psychologists, we are not in a position to change either the elements of the American political system that may spur this conflict or even the decisions made by pundits, politicians, and reporters about the terms they choose to use in political discussion" (p. 579). 稀土棕红色陶瓷颜料的制备

在低温下,采用溶胶均匀共沉淀法合成了含少量稀土氧化物CeO2的棕色陶瓷颜料,并应用颜色测定、SEM及XRD分析等手段对颜料的颜色、粒度及结晶构造进行了表征。同时,将合成的颜料应用于陶瓷釉料中,表明该颜料可以应用于1320℃的高温环境下。

对新型保温材料──炭化稻壳的理化指标及其保温性能进行了阐述。在连铸生产中采用炭化稻壳做保温剂可取得显著的经济效益，是理想的保温材料。     

Compressive Stress-Strain Relationships of Two Puffed Cereals in Bulk

The compressive stress-strain relationships of two puffed cereals, rice and corn based, in bulk were determined using a Universal Testing Machine. The general sigmoid shape of the relationship could be described by a four parameter empirical model originally developed for cellular solids. Jaggedness could be expressed in terms of an apparent fractal dimension and/or the mean magnitude of the power spectrum determined using the Fast Fourier Transform. Both measures as well as a particular parameter of the empirical model were sensitive indicators of the changes in the stress-strain relationships resulting from exposure to different relative humidities. Although the stress strain relationship, especially of dry samples, had an irregular, irreprodu-cible shape, the magnitude of the two roughness measures was highly reproducible.     

APPLICATION OF THE POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION TO THE RAPID ANALYSIS OF BREWERY YEAST STRAINS

The rapid discrimination of closely-related Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains can pose a significant problem to breweries, in particular where closely related strains are being used simultaneously to manufacture different products. In this study, two PCR approaches have been examined to assess their usefulness for the discrimination of brewery ale and lager yeast strains. PCR using arbitrary primers (RAPD PCR) was found unsuitable for such an application since the DNA profiles generated from brewery strains were generally found to be identical, due presumably to the close genetic relatedness of these yeasts. In contrast, PCR using δ sequence primers could rapidly differentiate between many ale and lager strains and characteristic profiles for these were generated. This method could also be applied directly to yeasts isolated from brewery worts or from active dried yeast preparations. Results of such analyses were available within the working day.

MITOCHONDRIAL RELEVANCE TO YEAST FERMENTATIVE PERFORMANCE: A REVIEW

It is well known that dissolved oxygen fulfils critical roles in brewing yeast physiology and overall fermentative performance. The major and minor roles that have been identified are briefly discussed and another role, that of providing for minimal mitochondrial development and functionality, is suggested. The long accepted theory that mitochondria are irrelevant to fermentative performance is reviewed as to its basis and the evidence in support of it. However, minimal mitochondrial development is required to provide the cell with critical metabolic intermediates and components. These are identified and reviewed and finally, evidence is presented that mitochondria are critical to brewing yeast fermentative performance. The review concludes that when assessing the role of mitochondria, concern should be broader than simply for the energetic function of these organelles.

垄作冷渍型稻田氮、磷、钾化肥适宜施量及施用方法研究

通过垄畦栽冷渍型稻田早、中稻化肥不同施量及施用方法的田间试验,建立氮、磷、钾化肥施用量与产量的回归方程,推导出早、中稻氮、磷、钾化肥最佳施用量;在施肥量相等情况下,深施比表施肥效好,钾肥不足情况下,以稻草代钾肥同样取得较好增产效果。
