Synthesis of Pseudoionones by Acid and Base Solid Catalysts

The preparation of pseudoionones by aldol condensation reaction between citral and acetone have been carried out in the presence of acid (HY and beta zeolites), an acid–base (amorphous aluminophosphate) and basic catalysts such as an aluminophosphate oxynitride, MgO and different activated hydrotalcites. The results showed that acid or acid–base catalysts were not successful for performing in one pot the preparation of ionones. MgO and calcined hydrotalcites showed excellent activity and selectivity to pseudoionones, with calcined hydrotalcite more selective than MgO. Moreover, the rate of reaction can be improved by activating the hydrotalcite through rehydration. This activation can be successfully done by simply adding the optimum amount of water to the calcined hydrotalcite before reaction. The inhibiting effect of the concentration citral on the catalytic activity of rehydrated hydrotalcites that has been reported to occur at 273 K can be avoided by working at a reaction temperature of 333 K.

Prediction of liquid film mass transfer coefficients in packed columns using liquid holdup

A unique characteristic linear dimension (d), defined as the cube root of the specific liquid holdup (h_sp) in the packed column, was used to correlate successfully the liquid film mass transfer coefficient k_La for gas absorption-desorption for sparingly soluble gases in liquids below loading. To produce this simple, dimensionless correlation, k_La data reported in literature were used, covering a wide range of physical properties of liquids, packings and operating conditions. This new approach showed operating holdup as an important factor in gas liquid mass transfer.     

Carbon molecular sieve films produced by dc sputtering

This paper reports adsorption measurements that show molecular sieve effects in amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C : H) films deposited by d.c. magnetron discharge decomposition of acetylene. Adsorption of organic gases on the films is studied by using a quartz crystal microbalance technique. The sieve effect in this material depends on both deposition and annealing conditions. Films having significant molecular sieve effects are found to be typically microporous and to have a very small characteristic micropore dimension. It is suggested that the d.c. sputtered a-C : H film may be useful as a molecular sieve material in selective adsorption and gas permeation studies.     

Practical Design Model for Calculating Bubble Diffuser Contactor Ozone Transfer Efficiency

Ozone transfer to water or wastewater is necessary before desirable, effective ozone reactions occur. Several factors affect ozone transfer efficiency, including water quality characteristics, contactor configuration, and applied ozone characteristics. The design model presented in this paper addresses all factors affecting ozone transfer. The model was used to compare measured transfer efficiency with predicted transfer efficiency at four full-scale wastewater ozone disinfection facilities. A relatively good prediction was obtained at each plant.

The paper presents an example calculation of ozone transfer efficiency. Also, the effect of changes to some of the factors affecting transfer efficiency is presented, such as changes in diffuser depth, plant elevation, ozone concentration, water quality (i.e., ozone demand), pH, detention time, temperature, and acombination of factors. The design model may be used to evaluate the effect of changes in plant design on transfer efficiency, but cannot provide an absolute value for transfer efficiency until difficult-to-measure parameters, such as bubble diameter, are known.     

TESTS FOR FRACTIONAL INTEGRATION:A MONTE CARLO INVESTIGATION

Abstract. The performance of the Geweke-Porter-Hudak (GPH) test, the modified rescaled range (MRR) test and two Lagrange multiplier (LM) type tests for fractional integration in small samples is examined using Monte Carlo methods. Both the GPH and MRR tests are found to be robust to moderate autoregressive moving-average components, autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity effects and shifts in the variance. However, these two tests are sensitive to large autoregressive moving-average components and shifts in the mean. It is also found that the LM tests are sensitive to deviations from the null hypothesis. As an illustration, the GPH test is applied to two economic data series.     

Preparation of micro-patterned surfaces of Si-N-O films and their influence on adhesion behavior of endothelial cells

Microgrooves were prepared on Si(100) surface by photolithography and wet etching.Subsequently,Si-N-O films were deposited on the microgrooves by unbalanced magnetron sputtering(UBMS) and micro-patterned surfaces of Si-N-O films were obtained.The size of the micropatterns was measured by surface profilometer.The chemical composition of Si-N-O films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry(XPS) and the wettability of the micropatterned surfaces was evaluated by contact angle measurement.The beh...
