Effect of the silica precursor on the conductivity of hectorite-derived polymer nanocomposites

New hectorite and organo-hectorite clays have been prepared using different silica sol sources, in order to examine the importance of sol particle size, pH, and surface chemistry on the final matrix. Polymer-clay nanocomposites (PCN) are prepared by intercalating polyethylene oxide in the clay layers of lithium hectorites. The resulting films are physically and electrochemically evaluated. Conductivity values, activation energies, and lithium transference numbers indicate that the PCNs are single ion conductors with transference numbers close to unity. The activation energies are in the range of 0.02 V, two orders of magnitude lower than the conventional polymer electrolytes.

The Impact of the Sibling in Clinical Practice: Transference and Countertransference Dynamics.

For many years, the impact of sibling relationships on psychological development has been neglected in the literature, overshadowed by the role of the parent-child relationship. As a result, attention to sibling dynamics and sibling transference as valuable information for case formulation and treatment interventions has not been used to its maximum potential. The authors demonstrate how deliberate consideration of sibling dynamics as well as the transferences and countertransferences associated with those dynamics can facilitate treatment. Several important sibling dynamics are discussed, including siblings' influences on identity development; sibling rivalry, jealousy, envy, guilt, and resentment; and sibling attachment. The impact of sibling dynamics on adult love relationships is discussed, as are potential effects of sibling abuse and sibling bereavement. Examples of how these dynamics can manifest themselves in transference and countertransference reactions and suggestions for working with those dynamics are illustrated with clinical examples. This usually occurs when the therapy session seems irritating, exhausting or anxiety-provoking; this is particularly frequent with borderline and schizophrenic patients. An awareness of the significance of this type of transference will allow the therapist to make an unpleasant therapeutic situation into a useful therapeutic intervention. Psychoanalytic therapy of the borderline patient: Treating the fusion-separation contradiction.

The thesis of the article is that borderline psychopathology can be successfully treated by psychoanalytic therapy, and the principles of this treatment are outlined. Borderline psychopathology is defined as fusion in close relationships and reality adaptation in other situations. Thus, the major treatment issue is seen as the resolution of the transference psychosis. The article makes a distinction between overt and covert transference psychosis and demonstrates how both forms may be treated through interpretive means.
