How disorder can diminish avalanche risks: effect of size distribution

We study the behavior of disk assemblies with a variable disorder distribution. The packing is first consolidated and then continuously tilted very slowly. The amount of displaced disks for each tilted angle is recorded. Large displacements of the disks can occur due to some local or global mechanical instabilities. The definition of neighboring disks is based on radical (extension of Voronoï) tessellation rules to decompose, in a unique and perfectly defined manner, the two-dimensional space for polydisperse disks. In this way, by comparing the characteristics of stability for one disk to the neighboring ones for local ordered cluster, we can predict the global amount of displaced disks. Some tilting cycles have been performed to check the correlation between the instability of the packing structure (collective displacements) with micro and macro order parameters.     

Hybrid photocatalytic membranes embedding decatungstate for heterogeneous photooxygenation

The incorporation of decatungstate in polymeric membranes provides new heterogeneous photocatalysts for the oxidation of organic substrates under oxygen atmosphere at 25 °C. Photocatalytic membranes have been prepared yielding polymeric films with a high thermal, chemical and mechanical stability (PVDF, PDMS, Hyflon). Surface spectroscopy techniques including transmittance and reflectance UV-Vis and FT-IR have been used to assess the photocatalyst integrity within the polymeric support. Catalyst screening has been performed under both homogeneous and heterogeneous photooxygenation conditions. The photocatalyst activity has been evaluated in terms of the substrate conversion, turnover numbers, and recycling experiments. A membrane induced selectivity behavior has been evidenced by comparison with homogeneous oxidations.     

General relativity and quantum mechanics: towards a generalization of the Lambert W function A Generalization of the Lambert W Function

We present a canonical form for a natural and necessary generalization of the Lambert W function, natural in that it requires minimal mathematical definitions for this generalization, and necessary in that it provides a means of expressing solutions to a number of physical problems of fundamental nature. This generalization expresses the exact solutions for general-relativistic self-gravitating N-body systems in one spatial and one time dimension, and a previously unknown mathematical link between the (1+1) gravity problem and the Schrödinger wave equation.     

日本α－Al_2O_3粉体进展

综述了日本近１０多年来α－Ａｌ２Ｏ３粉体的发展状况。特别介绍了日本对α－Ａｌ２Ｏ３粉体的标准化工作。这对提高电子陶瓷等产品的质量是非常重要的。     

贝氏体铁素体片条的超微亚结构研究

首次采用扫描隧道显微镜(STM)在大气环境下直接观察了Fe-1.0C-2.0Si-4.0Cr钢中下贝氏体铁素体片条的组织结构,在下贝氏体亚单元内部首次观察到以前从未发现的,尺寸更小、形状规则、排列整齐的结构单元——超亚单元,并初步提出下贝氏体铁素体由以下四个结构层次组成:即下贝氏体铁素体片条由亚片条组成,亚片条由亚单元组成,亚单元由超亚单元组成。     

The peeling of flexible probabilistic fasteners

Probabilistic fasteners are attachment devices consisting of two elements each of which is covered by an array of outgrowths or protuberances which interact or interlock with those on the opposing surface to form a bond which can be made and detached many times. A number of peel tests are described in which the behaviour of such bonds, specifically those formed by Velcro® hooks and loops and Dual Lock®, has been explored. The value of the specific energy of detachment of such mechanically latched systems can be related to the geometry and material properties of the individual fixing elements. Similar arguments can be applied, both qualitatively and quantitatively, to some natural systems such as the spines on some cacti.

α－Al_2O_3衬底上生长的GaN膜的光学性质

采用金属有机化学气相淀积（ＭＯＣＶＤ）方法生长了α－Ａｌ２Ｏ３衬底上外延的高质量的单晶ＧａＮ薄膜。Ｘ射线衍射光谱与喇曼散射光谱表征了ＧａＮ外延薄膜的单晶结构和单晶质量。透射光谱和光调制反射光谱定出了六角单晶ＧａＮ薄膜的直接带隙宽度和光学参数。
